Simon Phillips

Simon Phillips is a talented Welterweight fighter who has over five years experience in MMA competition and has worked his way up from a successful start in the amateur ranks to having a good record in professional MMA action.

Recently dubbed as "The Exeter Executioner" Phillips has an extensive martial arts background and holds a 2nd dan Black Belt in Judo and was a former schoolboy and West of England Judo Champion, and he also represented England in the under 21's Judo squad. Phillips has also trained in amateur boxing and has won by decision in his only Boxing bout. Phillips has since moved on to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Grappling and has participated in the SENI Gracie Open and in the No-Gi Amsterdam Open Advance tournament.

Once he switched to MMA he quickly earned himself a reputation for being a solid and skilful competitor and was 16-1 as an amateur, winning the Welsh Grapple and Strike Middleweight Title, the National Combat Sports Light-Heavyweight Title and the Middleweight Southern Shoot Title. Before turning pro he also had two Semi pro fights which he won by submission.

After turning pro he showed his potential by defeating Cage Rage veteran Sami Berik, Geroid McNichol and Lewis Barrow (and won the Fightzone Welterweight Title in the process). This well rounded fighter has also defeated kickboxing Champion Zbigniew Kroll and the experienced top 10 UK Welterweight Lee Doski.

Although he had some time out due to injury early in 2009; Phillips was offered a spot in the English M-1 Challenge team, which he duly accepted as he was keen to move up the rankings and face top Welterweights around the world.

On his M-1 Challenge debut on April 29th; Phillips made a huge impression by KO'ing the talented former DEEP Champion Hidehiko Hasegawa in just 20 seconds of their bout in Tokyo. Phillips walked away with the win after landing a huge counter punch which sent the Japanese Judoka to the mat.  Phillips then travelled to Kansas City where he faced the Frenchman Gael Grimaud in Team England's second M-1 Challenge clash.  However despite a bright start Phillips lost by submission to the talented French wrestler.

Nevertheless Phillips returned to winning ways on August 15th when he defeated Jonathan Leon via a Rear naked choke late in round 1, when Leon's aggressive start left him vulnerable for a counter submission which Phillips took in clinical fashion.

That win helped Team England qualify for the M-1 Challenge Semi Finals and saw Phillips take on the undefeated Russian standout Magomed Shikshabekov who surprised Phillips with a stunning flying leg sweep takedown which led into a painful reverse heel hook early in round 1. Despite that loss Phillips ended the 2009 M-1 Challenge season with a 2-2 record.

Phillips returned to the domestic scene in 2010 and took on the unbeaten Yorkshireman Danny Mitchell at Knuckleup: Origins, which was shown in the UK on Sky Sports. However despite a solid performance which saw Phillips at times outwork his younger opponent on the floor. He was ultimately unsuccessful and was stopped in round 3 by ground and pound.

Despite this loss Simon Phillips is free to fight in any events and is looking for opportunities at both home and abroad in the Welterweight division.
