training in Scotland mate.
Don't mind getting thrown in at the deepend.
Got a wee bit of judo/boxing background

It really depends on the club.
I've been to places with good instructors who will gauge your level and bring you in at the right pace, but I've also been to places where the instructor thinks it's important to beat the shit out of to show you who's boss and then feed you to his best roid heads so you can learn "what it's all about."

hmmm i'm not happy about getting the shit kicked out of me, some basic techniques would be good tho!

Luckily these days there aren't too many of the latter style clubs around.
You'll be able to know you're in one in everyone if everyone is wearing tanktops to show off their guns and the first move you learn is a can opener.

Make a statement... work hard... if someone asks "Do you wanna give this a try" answer "yes" you will get more respect for doing something wrong or shite then not doing it at all, you will also learn more. Don't feel 'gay' OK, it's a sport where men roll around with each other, get over that right away, it's a sport where men compete using strength, agility, stamina and skill.
EXPECT to be tired... my first ever kickboxing lesson was on a Tuesday, I did an hour and was shattered, I thought how the hell did people do a second hour straight after? It was beyond me. I woke up the next morning and I could hardly move my legs, I remember walking straight legged all the way to work and having to miss the lesson on Thursday. I went back the next Tuesday and it was still hard, I woke up the next morning and my legs still hurt, just not as much... I was able to make the Thursday class... just. Then over the weeks it gets less and less painful, I now train two hours a day Mon-Fri and I am shocked if I wake up in any pain at all. Basically you will be knackered on your first lesson, expect that, but also know your stamina and fitness will increase at a pace that will amaze you.
Good luck.

cheers for the replies folks.
I'm not worried about rolling about on the floor. My mate does a bit of grappling etc so when we are at the gym we use the studio and have a bit of sparring. I really enjoy it tbh and can't wait to do it properly!

aah, sorry mate. Don't know the guy. If you were in Glasgow I'd suggest training with the Dinky Ninjas. Real good team with a very healthy attitude towards the sport too.
Hope you have great fun.
