View Full Version : Triangle escapes

On friday we were practicing triangles escapes. Now granted i dont have the greatest BJJ in the world, but we were letting each other put triangles on and then trying to work out of them.

So i triangled a lad called Eddie (very good guy from Fighting Chance) and had it on tight. i had pushed off his leg to create an angle, had his arm across, pulled his head down.....and thought that should be that......

but all he did was literaly posture up a tiny bit and run forward at full pace. this caused me to roll over on my neck and release th triangle. i tried hooking his leg...but couldnt stop him.

i'm bigger and stronger than eddie, yet he did this a few times and i could do fuck all to stop it. even Dave Hirst agreed that it looked like there was nothing i could do. anyone else ever had experience with this?

hold the back of his head, that way he is supporting your weight and you just slide along the floor as he runs, (still with your triangle on) rather than it rolling you over.

This thread just reminded me of a training session....im not anywhere near a good grappler...i have had experience of this with a guy who is relatively new to the grappling game and when i tried to get the triangle on he flung himself forward like a forward roll motion which took me over my own shoulder (backward rolling over a shoulder) making me release the choke....never worked out where he had learnt it or how he did it...i thought it was something that he just tried as he shit himself when the choke was coming on...obviously it wasn't after reading ur post. i'd be intersted to here if any1 else had seen this...the instuctor has never shown it in training...im now thinking he musta seen it in a dvd instructional. Im going to ask at the next training session.

have you tried locking out your hips?

so in theory when he goes to roll you over you will just slide across the floor

But without seeing it its hard to find a counter

i was pulling down his head. i suppose i could kind of lift my self of the floor as he starts to run, but would probably just get slammed

probably just my shitty bjj

roll with him? if its what I'm thinking you roll with him and end up in mount.

I did it in a grappling comp heres the vid (its at about 2.15 if you wanna skip to it) and it worked for me.

The beating from khanie was nothing to do with me, I gave my own.

SuntanSuperman
18-06-2007, 02:23 PM

i meant the kicking i get from you will probably be worse than the one i got from him

body oput to the side, then when he drives he' off balance and you fall into a mounted triangle. or switch to armbar

SuntanSuperman

david - you are clearly overestimated my bjj....i was just happy to get a triangle on lol....my heart broke when he didnt tap
tho did get some good slams in from clinch on him

spen - the lack of reply clearly shows my 'impending doom' status has now moved up to amber level 3..which is defined as 'he can't kill me in public....can he?!'

lulling me into a false sense of security = 'Imminent doom' status Red 1 - 'you should stick to fooseball brad, your good at that and it can't hurt you'

and i remember when you twistered me!!!

couldn't you use your 'roid strength to powerbomb him?

Dave Hirst
18-06-2007, 10:05 PM
I don't think I said it didn't look like there was anything you could do, but since I wasn't training I couldn't try it myself and see what to do though. It did look like an effective escape especially if the guy on the bottom isn't expecting it, but I think it should be possible to roll through with it, or thinking about it I might have tried hooking the leg as he stands up which would probably make it harder to run...

you stack him and hold the back of his head like a neck crank and he will not be able to hold the T.C...Or you could jus pick him up and slam him lol:p

VLee574
19-06-2007, 02:29 PM
i did slam him lol the kid just ddnt let go plus he had it on so tight that my explosveness was leaving me very quickly i slammed him twice

Dave Hirst
19-06-2007, 05:16 PM
Lee you really need to be avoiding having the triangle applied in the first place rather than waiting til it's on before you start escaping... trying to escape a fully applied triangle is like trying to duck once you've been knocked out. When you come training with us we'll go over it loads :)

yeah but if you try and slam you way out you look cool

body triangle isnt a submission really. (yeah I know Ivan Salaverry got someone with a spine crank from the position but that was just wierd)

and anyway Brandon, we both know who would triangle who when we spar, gi or no gi

I once tapped a traditional jiu jitsu guy with a bearhug from bottom sidecontrol, that doesn't mean it was a submission :p

Although it might work on Bradikins :D
