View Full Version : MMA styles
Chatting to some American martial arts friends of mine about MMA they talk of there being different MMA 'styles' some of which teach weapons and others self defence as well as MMA as such. Do we have different styles here or is it just MMA? I don't mean where one person is predominately a striker or grappler, I mean can we look at different clubs/teams and say they have a particular style? Perhaps though it's just American martial arts clubs jumping on the bandwagon scenting money to be made and promoting their style as MMA?
They also much a lot of MMA being the best for street defence. Right or wrong?

IMO
I guess this is one of those questions where the answer depends entirely on how you define MMA.
as a phrase, "mixed martial arts" can be applied to all sorts of clubs. JKD is in essence MMA in that context.
But if you define it as the sport MMA, then I think no, there is basically one "style" but with more weighting on various elements, be it grappling or striking.
As for MMA being the best street defense....
Who knows really, what works one time may not another. Its certainly (by its nature) a more complete style than most and so SHOULD be a better option on the street BUT some elements are not really that well suited to certain circmstances.
So to conclude;
Yes, no and maybe! lol how vague is that!!
i think it depends on the coaches backround.
myne jj and sambo will have a big input into the mma i teach. so it will differ from a strikers mma. maybe not so you would see but it would be a different style i think.
