I have access to both a BJJ club and a Judo club. I want to train about 3 times a week to start with and I aim to compete in one of these sports one day.

What art is better? Judo or BJJ? What's the main difference between the two? I've never done a grappling art before and I'm looking to start. I am going to do either BJJ or Judo. But I can't decide which one to do.

Any help would be great.

I would suggest Judo purely for balance and throws.
they compliment each other perfectly really.

Learn to throw people around first, then practive BJJ to submit them.

ah, ok cheers. I do want to learn subs though. Does Judo not emphasise submissions as much? Or are they just not as good?

yes.
judo does have it's subs.
but i'd find BJJ subs many times more efficient.

drill two or three subs from judo and practice the hip throws.
stand you in excellent stead.

I practice Judo and Trad JJ. If you do a google search you'll find in depth information on judo and bjj. With the judo there can be quite a lot of groundwork. It depends on the preference of the teacher. Some clubs do plenty of groundwork , others do very little other than the basics.

In Judo the areas in which you attack vary greatly from bjj. In Judo you can apply chokes and strangles but no neck cranks and you are only allowed to apply locks to the elbows not to the wrists or the knees , legs , ankles etc. Hold downs don't count in bjj whereas if you pin your opponents by the shoulders for 25 secs in judo you win.

Some bjj guys come down to our club for some stand up work and to be honest I don't find fighting them on the ground any different to fighting trad jj or judo. I'd train both styles and cherry pick the best techniques out of both. You may find that you lean to one style naturally.Good Luck.

Just a word of warning , I've read your other posts about drug taking. If you belong to a judo club or compete at Judo events you may be required to provide urine samples and this isn't just at international level events , this could be for local events. Judo is an Olympic sport and therefore falls under the controls of the Brititsh Olympic Association and WADA.

ive done modern jujitsu for the past 6 years or so, its a good martial art for your ground submissions, but when it come to competitions i use to struggle from standing due to me not knowing many takedowns, so i would recommend judo and a bit of bjj, it all depends on the style of the instructor, he may be a bjj guy and go through loads of takedowns/throws or he may not its up to you to go and try them both out and see which one you enjoy and works best for you.

If the BJJ club has an MMA class do that. That way you'll be learning No Gi with strikes. Which is more useful IMHO.
