I think he mens the kimura from mount :D as some teachers describe its application something akin to painting the floor as you apply the lock.

Paintbrush was the catch name for pulling the arm straight down the side of the body in Kimura fashion. Called paint brush because you keep the knuckle down as though you were painting on canvass (or other materials obviously).

Some people here are obviously worthy of Blue Belts from Roy (subject to a character reference of course!)

If you pay attention you'll see that this test is for when Roy is at a school in his association, not his home school. I know several blue belts under Roy at his gym and they didn't have to do this. He watches you train, spars with you, etc. like every other instructor.
But I think it's a smart and admirable for him to want to hold a standard when he's about to promote people who he only trains with a couple times a year (he has a lot of affiliates in Europe). I personally don't care to remember 5 of Helio's brothers, but questions about how BJJ developed, how it's different than JJJ, who developed it, etc. are valid since they help pass on the heritage of the art.
So Roy makes money on privates. Not a big deal. Again, realize this is for people seeking promotion outside his gym. Would you rather he go the Royce Gracie route and give out belts after an hour seminar and watching you roll once? He's trying to establish a real relationship with the person before he promotes them.
I don't even mind the character requirements. I admit they're unusual and there is some truth to the argument that what you're like outside the gym isn't relevant to the belt. But I actually like how Roy has them. Everyone I've talked to who's ever trained with him (and from the times I've talked to him) he's one of the nicest guys ever. He sincerely cares about other people. So I can see it being important to him that he's not lending his name and reputation to someone who's a terrible person outside of the gym.
I'm not saying this test is perfect, but I think it's commendable that he's establishing standards. How many times have we heard people complain about nebulous requirements, inconsistent promotions, "seminar blue belts" and tough guys who get promoted without technical knowledge?
You're free to criticize his requirements but at least he's got them.

dont take it personal flamey, nobody is mocking roys standards, were just saying it seems abit excessive even for a TMA let alone BJJ....
I agree that BJJ belts are worth having because (generally) there not handed out willy nilly, but there is a fine line between making gradings difficult to test somebodies tenacity and actually putting them off from doing it.

on another note, maybe a letter from the community is a good thing, the last thing we need is to teach shitbags how to fight!

Having trained with roy he's a quality guy, and for those outside of his school he has a good list of techniques you should know. Far better than me getting my blue cos I went to a royce seminar.
He's a very good teacher and he can eat a massive meat feast pizza in double quick time

Not taken personally at all, i was just as shocked at the list when I first saw it. It was only this geeza Aesopian making the comments that he made that made me rethink my initial emotions and read it all again.
I havent made up my own mind yet, I just thought Id throw it in the mixer as there were less protagonists than err err err - agaonist or what ever the other word is that opposite to protaganists?
Aesopian has a lot of good stuff to say and thought id try and cross pollenate from Sherdog to here![/I]
