Congrats to all who competed and to those who picked up some medals. :)

The americans swept the board by the looks of it, looks like the Brazilians either didn;t turn up or were trounced?

The results below have Rachel getting a bronze and Lisa Newton getting a silver.

I reckon thats meant to be John Kavanagh for ireland in the under 70kg :D

I'm curious, how is the competition structured so two competitors receive a bronze medal each?

It is common in BJJ and nogi tournies, probably in other grappling arts too, options for how to award bronze medals:

- Third place playoff of which the winner gets bronze (e.g. ADCC)
- No third place play off, both losing semi finalists get Bronze (almost all BJJ tournies)
- No Third place playoff, losing semi-finalist who lose to the eventual division winner gets bronze (e.g. CBJJ Pan Pacs)

In relation to bronzes x2, this is what happens in judo too. Very rarely will it be the beaten semi finalists that automatically get bronze though. In judo it will either be a Pools & knockout system or more commonly in international events (such as the worlds) a repercharge system, where the semi finalists "bring back" all of the competitors that they have beaten earlier. They then fight off to get to the repercharge final and the winner of the that final will fight the losing semifinalist from the opposite side of the draw.
The reason behind this system is that because there are no seeding systems in place the no's 1&2 could fight each other in the first match meaning the second best player may not medal if there was no opportunity to comeback

Any reason they don't seed, would theoretically be easy enough (given the stats they keep on all the players performance at the various comps).

More often than not there is no need to seed. Players move up and down weights depending on tournaments. For instance a guy called trautman would only compete at his weight category twice a year at the most, the rest of the time in the weight above. How could you rank him in a big tournament with only last years result to go from?

Ahh good point, Fallon does that too doesn't he? fights mostly @ 66kg but does the worlds/Olympics @ 60kg?

Had a great weekend in Antalya with the team and watched some great grappling matches :)

Just like to say thanks to everyone who was involved and also clarify that I lost on points in the semis to Felica Oh and then won the match against Christina Rodriguez for the bronze (she's the other bronze medallist) by submission.
