View Full Version : ScotROSS
Hi guys, does anyone have any info on this lot please? An acquaintance of mine was asking me if I knew anything about the ROSS system (I don't) and wants to train at this place. I thought of the Dinkies and that you might have 'visited' it lol! On first look it's seems a bit pretentious with shotgun disarms etc but could be fine.

They have camo gi's. That is amazing. Means I can hide in the bushes and jump people, while still wearing a manly gi!
LOL they seem a bit up themselves for my tastes. the sort that need to get a life :D

Those guys train in my powerlifting centre. Personally I'd gave it a miss if I were him. There is a really good Judo club at the same venue and as far as I know, there's a thai boxing club also. And there's always the griphouse just down the road in glasgow.
P.S. For the really brutal stuff, isn't the system that they taught in world war two still pretty much the most effective? I can't remember the names of the two guys that its named after but from when I learned the stuff, it had some really good information about how to attack the eyes, ears, groin and throat really well. It stood me in good stead for when I used to get the 240 bus home at night through Parkhead.

You mentioned freesparring?
What are the differences between free sparring and sparring? I've heard the term once before. Is it a specific way of doing it?
Thanks guys! Looking at the photos I'm always dubious when they do gun and knife disarms as though they were simple.
I agree that a lack of free sparring holds you back whether you want to do with competitions or self defence. I don't think rehearsed 'routines' help if you are attacked or in a comp as no one will attack exactly as you have practised.

Aaah, so free sparring would be just another way of saying a hard spar?
Surely if it was pre determined then it wouldn't be sparring? Isn't that just technique work eg. drilling switching from armbar to triangle or drilling throwing a right cross when they throw a right kick?

Many self defence martial arts that do not or practice very little free sparring are still useful.
I disagree with this but everything else you mentioned is spot on.

The key to effective drilling is what your partner is doing? Does he stand there like a rag doll being pulled and pushed around, or does he offer resistance - trying to stop you to varying degrees or even apply a technique to you?

trained with these dudes once when they ran the class in maryhill police station. that was an interesting experience. they didnt use mats when practicing throws/takedowns cause you wouldnt have mats in a street fight/ self defence situation

Brings to mind a line...."BADGUYS DONT USE RUBBER KNIVES, so III Don't use rubber knives"
Have any of you trained with Phil Hughes at all? uses real knives, we still have the holes in the mats to prove it! His training is hard but effective.

fuck getting stabbed
That would be a great tagline for one of these groups.
"Fuck getting stabbed. So come see us!"
