Just a quick question, do judo practioners tend to come into MMA and integrate well? I know many MMA fighters base their ground game on wrestling and BJJ but would it be pheasable to substitue the BBJ with Judo?

As a general rule, unless they are pretty damn good to begin with and make the effort to cross train, then no, just like plenty of BJJ guys who go in unprepared.

If they cross train properly, make sure they are well prepared and go in with realistic impression of what takes place, then yes.

The reason there are more BJJ guys in MMA than judo is that BJJ has been linked with MMA since day one, and the old guard in judo aren't exactly too happy about their guys going into 'no holds barred' competition. Both arts have the potential to turn out fantastic MMA fighters though.

The judo old guard were more disappointed with Kimura doing nhb & even more so doing "works". Now adays judo has a great recognition as an olympic sport and more lads are bothered about that than mma. Plus in judo ground work a great defensive position is the turtle (not recommended in mma)

1:38 id John Buchannon - World medalist @ 60kg, he doesnt do judo anymore ( i was with him on thursday) He called down to kendal & ended up on the mat.

I think as mma fighters begin to get paid more we may see more top class Judo players moving to mma when their Judo carrers are over.

I think that is a possibility, but very few judoka retire on their own terms. Normally its through injury or life commitments (family etc).

I certainly hope that judoka will come into mma

Same here. Would be good for Judo to show how good it really is.

What is the pay/opportunity like for mma in this country? also assuming your successful how long would it take to get established? This is in relation to some1 who has cross trained already and is ready to fight, not just jump straight in from judo or whatever background.

Too true - unless you are a funded player - then you get an annual salary.

No disrespect Smiler but you and jeff arent TOP level judoka i.e. No 1 in the country

Judoka he is..none the less..

he was/is a TOP level stand up fighter..from a neutral point of view..its probably unanimiously agreed to be his strongest range..bt this is well known by ev1..

this is where he can atleast match and undoubtedly surpass the majorities ablity..

Hi Dirty Dick!

Agreed, we are not no.1 currently although I was a national level and international competitor for many years and British Schools Team in 1989...and I did judo from 1976-1991 and 2007-present (getting back into competition too - lets have some fun!), so I'm not just a club judoka...Jeff has some quality judo wins under his belt too...and the point was that that is mine and Jeff's judo background origins that led us on our way into MMA...

Following the thread Smiler, i misunderstood your intention, i already know of your history & have fought jeff on a number of occassions so was not meaning to discredit either you in anyway (if it was taken that way)
I was meaning that no real quality judoka will invest their valuable time to train for a mma career.
Fallon & Cousins are the only 2 that have competed in this country with a top judo pedigree - neither of whom have invested alot of training time into MMA as their mixed results shown
1 won 1 lost against decent level of competition - IMO they should have fought amateur matches first.

Don't worry mate, I didn't take it as a discredit! And you've fought with Jeff so you know his grappling quality...damn that ginger ninja...

I see your point fully - no serious top level judoka would invest time in MMA unless his career was already over...or an incredible (and unlikely) financial offer was made...although some of Camberley Judo Club, led by Mark Earle, did some boxing and competed (with some success!!!) at an amateur boxing do - this was done as cross training though, not a serious assault on boxing...

I tell you, the Olympics is a bit of a pull....I would give all of my 13 World Titles for 1 Olympic Gold Medal...

Tis true - the olympics tends to stay the focus until the career is waning - at which point adding in the other things (strikes and working from guard) is a bit of an uphill battle imho

On the other hand, I think judo is a great base for kids, and just as we see wrestlers moving across to MMA in the US, I think judoka will do so more and more. I can see guys who are late teens early 20s, good but accept that they aren't world class, or can't get lottery support, looking to pick up a career in MMA.

And I would also trade all Smilers world titles for a shot at Olympic glory :D (if I had any I'd trade mine too!)

I think Judo has so much depth and width in talent pool if you even looked at another martial art for more than 2 minuites, you would never make it to the top in Judo... it seems to me to be sooooooo! competitive, with soooooo! much talent... I heard Kiaro Parisian in a recent interview say how he is not even in the top 100 in his weight in judo, but in the ufc he is a top 5 guy.

MMA again may pay more but there is more than money to life imo.

I know people that could earn alot more than they do but dont because they love there lesser paying job so much.

I am a BJJ guy but I have alot of respect for Judo.... it is tough as hell.
