and if you do are you training for MMA, or purely for judo/BJJ?

personally I only train no gi as i feel that learning gi techniques are pointless for MMA and that's what i'm training for.

just wanted to hear peoples opinions

I train mainly in a Gi, only for Gi comps at the moment. I train No-gi when I can, and will enter a no-gi comp at some point.

Personally, I agree with the argument that it is better to train no-gi for MMA etc, but also, training with a Gi means you have to rely more on technique as you cannot rely on slippery sweaty skin to save your ass!

Training Gi but using overhooks and under hooks, head and arm control instead of collars and sleeves seems a happy medium.

To be honest though, I want to train both Gi and No-gi as much as possible.

you could also say you need to rely on technique more in no gi though, because it's harder to hold on to sweaty skin. you really need to have your subs on tight to pull them off.

i train approx 80% no gi but every time i train in a gi i really enjoy it.

gi and no gi both have their merits, no gi is faster and more athletic whereas gi grappling gives you more options for subs and sweeps and allows you more control over your opponent.

personally i think training in a gi enhances your no gi game, and vice versa.

but you have to rely on technique to escape in a gi, because you can't just slip out because the gi stops you from being slippery. i think its good to train both.

I only train for judo thus always in a gi, however this hasnt always been the case. i feel having knowledge and experience of the gi has not taken anything away from a no gi game and only adds to it

I do both 50/50 Gi and no GI and find that neither suffers as a result I reckon my Gi game might've got a bit better as a result of doing no gi as mentione dpreviously you really need to hang on in no Gi so adapting similar grips to the GI only helps make it better

what most of you are missing is that training in a gi doesnt mean you have to use sports bjj gi techniques

Marcello Garcia trains in a gi every day and no gi just once a week. He thinks it helps gi and no go subs (he should know)

I train both - with and without the Gi - I don't see the point in limiting yourself and would ideally like to be good at both... :)

I train in a gi, but only for stand up. I love the crisp 'snapp' when I throw out my kicks and punches

slightly off topic but a guy turned up to train with us a while back. Said he'd done Jujitsu for a few years and wanted to get back in to it.

There was a deadly silence when he stepped on to the mat in a black, short sleeve satin gi!!! Not sure what sort of jujitsu this lad had been doing.

Turned out his father in law worked with my brother and he told him we were mental, all punching and kicking each other and trying to choke each other (I think he may have missed the point of martial arts!!!) He didn't come back

true but sometimes in order to get to train with a variety of good grapplers you have to go to a good judo or ju jitsu club. Sometimes you just cant get the training partners or find the clubs full of good no gi grapplers.

I enjoy gi more but train in both. I am of the opinion that a beginner will learn faster if they start off in a gi as the can't spaz out and rely on athletisism.
