Kevin chan deseves his black belt....
2005 worlds (silver)
2005 Pan Ams (bronze)

There are some BJJ players in the UK that certainly dont deserve there grades.........

Got to be honest though, BJJ is getting watered down compared to years ago!

Kevin Webb of Gracie Barra Birmingham is still a purple belt! He is one of the best people ive ever trained with!

listen dickhead, read MY post carefully before being patronising, what you are saying is braulio doesn't know when it's fit to promote people, i didn't mention you talking about chan at all.

what i DID mention was talk of people not deserving their belts on a belt promotion thread is blatantly disrespectful, if you don't understand this you are a moron. Anything further you wish me to clarify?

Just because there are more purples and browns around?

I asked Rob "G" the other week if HE would like to do a workshop, He said he would ask Braulio I had a pm back saying Braulio dident think it was a good idea I can only surmise that because Braulio was not making any money out if it he did not want his students teaching? I can see no other reason? we have always had a good relationship with GB.

yeez.. How about just giving Kevin Chan props.. Any one who gets a black belt in bjj is someone to look up to. Its a hard road.. Esp under Roger, Mauricio.

Dtec, Steve,
YOu are not the only ones to have problems with bjj instructors.. Same like people having trouble with boxing coaches etc.. Not very cool to spout this on a topic of someone geting a bjj black belt imho.. Just give kevin chin some props.

Note i am not Gracie barra, i dont even know this dude.. But take it somewhere else :)

a bjj fan :)

Kevin Webb is very good for sure, i think he may be injured at the moment(?) hope it clears up if so and we see him competing again soon. I would say he, Luciano and Mike Russell spring to mind as the best UK based purples at the moment but there are plenty who could be mentioned.

In general i think the quality control on British Black, Brown and Purple belts is pretty good, you can see a fairly definitive list here: http://www.efnsports.com/forum/index.php?board=25.0

I think i know the certain player you are referring to but it is unnecessary to mention it on this thread - if you feel that strongly about it, perhaps you could take it up with the black belt in question?

Where's video of him being flogged by other students?
Conveniently for them, Black Belts don't get belt whippings.

Kevin Chan is a very, very good BJJ technician who fully deserves this great honour. He has put time, effort and energy into the sport. He has helped build UK BJJ into the art it is today as well as competing (all over the world) in the last 8 years and receiving some great results.

As well as being a great BJJ Competitor,Kevin has dedicated his life to the Martial Arts-passing on his Wing Chun method to thousands of students, keeping that art alive and well.He is not just a highly respected member of the UK BJJ Community, but a much admired member of the Worldwide Martial Arts Community.

Well Done Kevin.

It is a great shame that whenever someone has put blood, sweat and pain over the years into BJJ, staying loyal to their team and Instructor,
there are always a few internet MMA wannabe's who feel it is appropriate to make comments about UKBJJ.

These people are usually guys who couldn't wait and put the time into learning the art of BJJ and it's technical system. It was easier for them to take off their Gi's and practise Ground and Pound on a heavy bag lying on the floor of a Gym.

The strange thing is,you will never find proper Professional MMA fighters
talking about "UK BJJ gettting watered down" and people "Not deserving their Belts".
Because as Professional Athletes, real MMA fighters generally have a healthy respect for the students and teachers of all the different arts that make up
what we call MMA.
Professional Athletes know what it is like to win AND lose in competition and as such, will congratulate people on Belt Threads,OR,if they feel congratulations are not deserved, they will say nothing at all.

That is because,of all the Professional Athletes i have met, especially in Combat Sports, most are gentleman and sportsman.

The rest are wannabe's who won't last long.

Especially not long enough to be recognised as a leader in their chosen field of the Martial Arts.

...and as for the subject, congrats to all (may as well post this here as well as EFN).

I always think, if people have a problem with any belt promotions they should speak to the instructor who gave out the rank. People don't do that though, because they're pussies. People also won't name who they have an issue with, for the same reason. Either tell it straight to the people you're criticising (the people who gave out the promotion) or shut the fuck up.

im pretty sure kevin chan used to live in portsmouth and he definitely had a kamon wing chun school in the city too. Im pretty sure though that he had schools all over the south and may have moved away from portsmouth altogether and left the school to senior students?

Can anyone tell me if he teaches a bjj class in pompey, or in the surrounding area please?

Congrats on his achievement.

I remember fighting kevin when he was a blue belt at one of the early KSBO ground fighting comps in Nottingham and he was a really sound guy then.
