I think the match up is pretty harsh really...

Josh Ramage, Kevin Knight and Martin Evans are all amatures... both been training between 18 months and two years. Raj is a wrestling coach for Trojan / Hill Tribes and has been training for a very long time, I would question that match making.

However Josh Ramage and Kevin Knight are both very, very good fighters. I think Kevin and Martin will lose to Raj's wrestling, however I think Josh will be able to keep it on the feet and knock Raj out. I would say Kevin vs Raj is Raj winning, Martin vs Josh is Josh winning... Josh vs Raj is Josh winning by TKO...

However i still have big questions (as do many others) in regards to the match making... but there we go.

Its an amataur show with a good safety record. No one will get hurt. its not as if Raj a big roid freak with his sights set on killing his opponents. All fighters in the tourny agreed to fight, they know how good Raj is and they will go into the tourny confident that they can come out with a belt. No missmatches, all fighters have done well in previous AFL's and have established them selves as number one contenders!

I think maybe Aplin is bitter because both his losses are to fighters who are entering the tourny and he is gutted that he's not good enough to be included.

Nak-Muay
09-03-2008, 11:28 PM
Whatever dick head. I am not bitter at all, they are all great guys, all very skilled and I believe all have a good future. I just think that when you have people like Paul Reed, Stapes, etc saying 'I have sparred Raj, he is good' you need to stop and think... why is this guy sparring with people of such high calibour, when Josh, Martin and Kevin are learning / being taught by people like this...

I have asked to rematch both Kevin and Martin, and I would like to fight Raj when I get back from Thailand next year. Although you try and piss me off Ricky because you're an ass kisser to certain people, I know on the day I wasn't good enough to beat either, which is why I am doing something about it and going to train full time in Thailand. I am glad I lost to both because it taught me something, it taught me I need to train seriously and that is what I'm going to do from now on.

I look forward to coming back in one years time and making you eat your words Ricky... now, go train and how about instead of critisizing people you get in the cage and actually fight? I'm back in January if you loose enough weight (stop drinking / eating shit) and it shouldn't be a problem for you seeing as 'I'm not good enough' for people in the AFL :)

I'll even follow your dodgy match making and fight you at 70KG seeing as your 'slimming world' diet is going so well... so there's your motivation :) I hate 'calling people out' on forums, but your such a cocky critic that I feel I need to because otherwise you think you have a higher status which is not the case. I don't care if someone has lost 20 fights and tells me I suck, but I do care about someone having had no fights and telling me I'm not good enough... So step up Ricky...

MMA Alien:

well training in MMA and Muay Thai is fun, but i cant wait to get in the ring/cage and have my own fights and kick some ass, being such a short ass as i am and weighing so much its very hard trying to find myself an opponent to beat up!

You got one :)

P.S. I appologise for bring this into the AFL thread, will continue this by PM with Ricky directly.

I hope the show goes well, my experiences with The AFL have been relatively positive. Obviously this time round I feel I was mis-matched against a guy much bigger than myself. However my last two fights have been pretty fair and I was treated well when I arrived. In terms of fans it is a very well put on show enjoyable to all and with high production quality. I wish Mike Swanbo all the best with the show and hope all the fighters have a good night in Newport.

I agree again! I'm pretty much the same, trained for a few years here and there. With Mike Swambos Hilltribes (AFL founder) for a while, SSJJ, Muay thai and BJJ. Fought in gi (recently) and no gi and amateur mma and thats it due to work and family commitments I can't spend the time to dedicate to fight pro rules so what do I do sit on my arse just encase someone (like Aplin) doesn't think it's right.

Aplin - poor show offering someone out on a forum mate, thought you had a bit more class than that

As for Raj, yes he's damn good, but only because he's had good coaching, good training partners ;) and works his ass off. He's an amateur fighter at the end of the day (he only has 2 fights ffs) and, in my opinion, any of the guys he's potentially fighting can beat him - none of them are chumps by any stretch of the imagination.

I know where my money i going to be though!

continuing with the AFL theme though, how good is Nick Mcfadden vs Stuart Tyrie going to be??? seriously looking forward to that one.

Aplin - poor show offering someone out on a forum mate, thought you had a bit more class than that

Nahhhh, I just don't appriciate being told 'Im not good enough' by someone who doesn't fight, never had a fight and says stupid things on the Internet like 'It is hard for me to get a fight' when there are so many threads asking for fighters. Not to mention the jibes I have recieved from Ricky over since my first fight in April, I generally just don't like the guy and I have always been told one of my biggest down falls in the cage is I'm too nice, I don't show aggression... So maybe fighting someone I don't like can help me out a bit.

Just as an update Ricky accepted the match, so I look forward to it. Granted it won't be until January / February when I get back from Thailand, however I look forward to testing my Muay Thai skills I pick up on Rickys face. As I said before, I feel Ricky hides behind his notepad and ass kisses his way into promotions, so it is good that he is proving me wrong by stepping up... Fair play to him and I won't say another bad word against him up until we fight... last night I went a little over the line by swearing at him and going OTT on the abuse, however I felt a bit let down that he insulted my abilities and called me bitter.

Look forward to punching you in the face Ricky ;) Start training... lose some weight and lets put on a good show :)

I understand what you are saying and I am not saying Raj should fight pro at all. What I am saying is more emphasis should be on 'match making', I recently competed at Fahred Ali's show in Sheffield and EVERY match has been carefully set up be experience, weight, time training, etc. The same thing goes for Quannom (sp) type shows, they are all about fighting based on level, rather than fight experience. Fight experience is just one part of the puzzle...

However it seems that in Amature MMA TOO OFTEN it is set upon how many MMA fights someone has had. For example is it fair someone who has trained MMA for 12 months fights someone who has kickboxed 9 years? Even if both have only had 1 MMA fight each for example. I would say no because they are likely to have their head kicked off, however it happens...

Again though, just my opinion and I am not a promotor, just a fan. I see amature MMA as a learning process and I think to learn people need to fight without the risk of getting hurt or put in matches against someone they are expected to lose against. However I can see your points about if they wanna fight let them fight... just sometimes fighters need protecting against themselves... :P

matchmaking at the bottom end of the scale is notoriously tricky if you want to do it correct, as fighters have no form. A quick KO makes the matchmaker look bad if it is very one sided.

Yet an ineffective clash of styles send people to sleep. Without form, comments from others in the scene or indication on how fighters will react in a fight or flight atmosphere....it is hard to matchmake.

Certainly, which is why I have so much respect for people like Fahred Ali (KBidiot) and Quannum, you look at those matches and they are ALL brilliantly set up. Kainer2 I can't comment on CW as I havn't seen your ammature fights. Anyway, we shall see what happens... as I have said, I think Josh Ramage will supprise a lot of people and take this one. But I think the plan was to have Raj destroy the lot of them and take the title... which is wrong. Again, opinions though and mine may well be wrong. I appologise for being baited... I dislike petty forum arguments, esspecially when it spoils a thread. However I am glad I've got a match I've wanted for ages ;)

Aplin you are wrong. Raj is not the Wrestling coach at Trojan,Saeed Esmaili is the wrestling coach, and Raj assists him when he cannot teach.

In the order of things, at Trojan Raj is just the same as all the other fighters who come to learn, he is just someone who is training with a view to going pro.

His prominence in the team is because he has done a lot to develop an amateur element to the Trojan package and does a lot of behind the scenes stuff to support the team. But in terms of instructing staff, he has never taught the team and merely seeks to develop his skills like the other fighters. Also why have you stated that the three guys matched in the tourney against Raj are Amateurs? Are you not aware that Raj has never fought pro, and if you are then why do you mention it? The matching is fair and I think the fights will be exciting.

Well like I said, I believe matches should be made fairly on skill level, not experience. Otherwise what stops me from not competing for the next 10 years but training 6 days a week and then fighting people with the same fight experience as myself? People will just get hurt, happens consistently in boxing.

It's the same everywhere mate, thats the way it is. A lot of subs grappling comps are under 2 years training over 2 years. So I could theoretically fight a BJJ blackbelt in subs wrestling but compete as a white belt in BJJ.

I am the one who promoted Aplins kickboxing fight and can vouch for the fact that he knows his way round the ring for a novice. The lad is a complete gentleman and should be shown respect for having the balls to get in the ring and fight kickboxing against one of my kickboxers and he gave himself a good showing.
Who is Ricky just out of curiosity and would he take a kickboxing fight? I would gladly put it on in November if both parties are up for it.

Au Contraire young man, most of our kickboxing fights include leg kicks.
Some include knees as well.

We have :
Full contact = shiny pants with boots and all kicks above belt.
Low kick= Shorts and low kicks allowed
Oriental rules= Shorts with low kicks and knees. (K-1 style basically)

We also have different levels for the Low kick or the K-1

Novice= 3x1.5 mins with leather shinpads on

C Class= 3x2 mins (shinpads optional)

B Class = 3x3 mins , No pads. Knees to the head in the K-1 style are allowed.

Please let me know i love forum fights

Aplin - talking about mismatches.......... you have at least 4 fights that I know of, yet you've just offered out a complete novice (no offence meant Ricky, just referring to the fact you've had no fights)

Seems to me that someone of your experience, having fought the caliber of opponent you have would be completely mismatatched against a guy with only 1 interclub Thai boxing match and no MMA experience whatsoever.

I'm not trying to rile you Marc (don't want to get offered out!) I've met you a few times and think you're a nice guy, not to mention I've seen your fights and think you've got heart (I've said as much in your defence before), but I don't think what you're insinuating about The AFL is fair - you were well treated both times you fought up in Newport. Mike is a hard working guy who loves this sport and puts on quality shows with reat fights - anything but mismatches!

Neil - lets get it on mate. I'm more than happy to fight you.............

None taken sam, as it is true. i agree with the rest of your post too. Mike and the AFL do not deserve all this negative feedback from a guy who had been given a great opportunity by mike and and the hard working staff at the AFL. dont bite the hnd that feeds you!

Was scheduled to but had to pull out due to a shoulder injury :( not training at the moment so have no way to get the frustrations out - hence participating in internet forum bitch fests lol!

Good luck to the fighters tomorrow. As I have said before it is a very good show and I wish Mike and the show the best of luck... I spoke to Mike for a good 30 minutes on the phone today lots of arguing and swearing ;)

However I think his point was fair, I shouldn't have publically said what I said, I should have phoned him. I emailed and text him a few times (mainly as I am at work) and at night I train. But he said he gets too many texts and emails to reply... And I hope my point of 'I wanted to know who I was fighting' was also valid.

So I appologise for bringing my opinions into a public forum before talking from Mike. It sounds like a lot of shit stirring was going on (people telling me what Mike had said and people telling Mike what I had said) behind the scenes that people didn't see.

I wish the show the best of luck and as I have already said, I think Mike is a good guy, and I don't nessecerilly agree with some of the match ups. HOWEVER it is not my decision to make and I am sure other people have opinions but have shut up and not mentioned them...

Good luck everyone tomorrow, put on a good show... Gonna learn to keep my opinions to myself a bit more I think ;)

I see Josh being one of the top in his weight class one day in the future, I have never trained with someone who puts so much heart and determination into every training session, sparring session and even technique work.

You'll come back from this mate and you'll get a much bigger title one day in the future :)

In brief, great event, excellent all-round standard from the fighters. The amateur scene in South Wales is very slick. Some of the young lads fighting on this show have real potential to great things on the larger pro stage at a later tie. I'l def be keeping my eyes on a few of them.

I know i say this after every AFL and its getting old, but the AFL get better and better with every show. the athmosphere was amazing last night. all the fights were entertaining. and to sell out a hall that size is a great achievement. The afl has to be THE BEST AMATEUR SHOW in the UK!

Big up to all the boys who fought - what a night of entertainment! Sold some tickets to some friends who came along and had a great night - good job Mike & co!

Aplin - seems you were wrong about the tourney - mismatch it certainly wasn't! Josh gave an excellent account of himself in the (highly technical) final, it was easily the closest fight of the night. I personally would have liked to have seen another round. I'm sure Mike would like to give him a rematch - I for one think he deserves it and would love to see it.

As for Stuart Tyrie - I'm blown away! I train wth Nick regularly and the guy is an absolute machine, so that just shows the magnitude of Stuarts victory. That said (and I do think Tyrie has a great future in this sport) I would still like to see a rematch of this fight. Stuart caught Nick early on with a punch that rocked him and he was never given the chance to recover - I'm fairly certain that with a good game plan, and now knowing what to expect, Nick would have a good chance of beating Stuart.

The AFL Pool just seems to be getting deeper, and I think with shows like that the fighters who want to eventully turn pro are gaining invaluable experience, which I know was one of Mike's main objectives when he was thinking about putting together the first show back in caerphilly in 06. I will miss the next one in June but cannot wait until september when I will hopefully be back in the cage!

Well done again lads!!
