yeah only black belts can grade people but other belts can give stripes to people on a lower grade.

Jay and Chris are incorrect. This is even mandated for by the CBJJ/IBJJF but is generally supposed to be in circumstances where either:

-There are no black belts in your country
-Your instructor is a black belt who lives abroad, you aren't a black belt but you have permission to grade up to one belt below you on his behalf.
-You are a given belt below black belt, without any real instructor, you can grade up to one belt below your own level.

Sometimes people just wait ages until their instructor comes over for a seminar and have mass gradings.

When you say earlier, what do you mean, you heard a purple belt graded someone to blue? Reasonably uncommon these days i guess given the large number of black belts in the UK.

Stripes are for Tigers.

I was told that Neil Simkins (purple) does the gradings at GB Walsall? I thought that wasnt possible.

Isn't GB Walsall a satellite of GB Brum, Braulio's place? If it is I'd imagine he'd be doing it with the affiliated black belts permission as there's plenty of schools in that area and if it's a GB school they'd have some kind of grading structure in place to meet the GB criteria

Yes it's a off shoot of GB Brum, atleast i think so??

Try the opposite, I love BJJ hell I did enough for it! I am a blue belt maybe if I graded Purple belt nothing more! I will not go into details but its safe to say I have my reasons.

Im a purple and I would never consider grading someone.

Stripes have their place but not as a way to keep people happy/keep them training.

Its not that rare I used to train under a Purple belt. Black Belts used to be extremely rare in this country. Even now most jujitsu classes are run by non Black belts.

being taught by a blue or purple is the norm in the UK I agree, however purple belt grading is a bit rare (wierd?)

A few points I feel are relevant.

As a Brown Belt I have graded people to blue, even with Wilson (black belt) standing next to me. Sometimes it is just right for the lower grade to give the belt and the value of that belt isn't diminished at all.

I think it's fine for a purple or brown to grade anyone to the grade below them, especially if there is a black belt to help guide that decision.

Anyone who feels that they should be moving on to the next level has a very simple way of proving it. Entering competitions and dominating the division you are in repeatedly is a clear signal that you are ready.

It's often difficult to compete when you feel you are at the upper end of your belt level, you feel that if you lose then the chance of promotion will recede and there is some pressure to do well.

However if you fail to compete then you are only proving one thing, that in your heart you don't believe you're good enough.

As far as i know GB walsall, braulio does the grading etc... he was down week friday gone. i think and it is only a huge think !!! that Neil has handed out strips obiviously to huge improvements. But everything does go through Braulio.
