Got a decent knowledge of groundwork and figured that boxing would be the best starting point for working on striking.
opinions?

boxings good. will get your cardio fitness up really quick and will get your hands and feet working together. one little thing tho' , and if im wrong then please people are welcome to argue: dont get too used to the ducking and bobbing bit, its great in boxing but will get you kicked and knee'd in the snot box in martial arts. not good. :D

i Agree totally i boxed for yrs in army, got to a good standard awell but my bobbing and weaving got me ko'ed several times when i first started mma.
Me personally i would recommend muay thai for stand up, it will help bring your feet into play when fighting!!

Boxing over Muay Thai, for MMA. Hands are much more accessable weapon than kicks
If you don't move your head, someone is going to punch it.. simple fact..

personally...a mixture of both if possible..
funny this should be mentioned as i have a friend who has competed in mma successfully from a boxing background..he then integrated some thai and kickboxing and has now recently decided to return to boxing and train seriously as he feels this is where his best gains, for his personal striking game, came. He aint much of a 'bobber and weaver' but he does have good head movement (inside and outside) and good lateral movement, which maybe some of the reasons that his boxing style is so transferable to mma.
Everyones differant tho...

Probablem with learning Thai is it will take a while before you can use the kicking skills effectively in MMA. If your kicks aren't great, chances are you will get punched and/or taken down.
It's far easier to get a lower level of boxing to be useful in MMA

100% agree..
bt theres nothing like eating a low kick..or being shinned long the side of the head!!!:D :D
Another point maybe,..... if an individual gets too ryhthmic with traditional boxing punches...he too is open for the takedown..like all martial arts, things need to be tweaked to slot into the wonderful, magical world of mixed martial arts..;)

What is important if your boxing mainly i think is to get sparring in with good thai guys so you can box with them as they are trying to kick at you. You might not really be thai boxing yourself but you will get experience in bomxing with sparring with somone kicking at you.

some good advice there reedy...u can add in all of ur counters to the 'kicker' and find out how to effectively use ur boxing style without being badly damaged.

I have done boxing from early age and all i ll say is don t let them get you standing side on as its no good for takedown defence as ya front leg is to far forward and easy to grab, i still train boxing twice a week but in a more square on stance.

Good point.
The traditional boxing stance (side on and with weight on the front leg) is riskier than a traditional squarer Muay Thai stance in MMA, as that front leg makes takedowns easier. It's also more fun to kick :)
I guess what most people are saying is MMA is not boxing and it's not Muay Thai. It's MMA, and whilts some parts of boxing and some parts of Muay Thai will be of use, both will have to be adapted in order to be successful in MMA.
... which is why you need a striking coach that understands MMA.

I suck at MT and kickboxing but I am naturally very good at boxing. I think it is much easier to punch than kick I hate kicking

lol @ people who still think boxing is better than kickboxing for mma.... right.....
i LOVe boxing and like it more than doing kickboxing etc and love watching it more. But the complete skill set of kickboxing is way better. Also the dutch style of kickboxing has good hands...
