I took a big group to the 1st leg last year but found it a bit of a rip off tbh.
It costs £15 plus £10 insurance, the mma league is £15 including insurance.
There was about 20 of us including people watching and he still made me pay £10.
I`d made them £280ish so I thought it was a bit cheeky.
The dvd of the event costs £12 but the mma league are sending a copy of the event to the competitors for FREE.
With the added bonus of spectators only being charged £5 and it being 1 hour up the road, I`ve sacked it lol.
My guy Mark Adams won the lightweight division last year and they didn`t even bother to put a write up on their own site, that to me shows how bothered there are about the event.

Imagine Dale Sadams ripping people off... you are lucky you didn't have to pay for a gum shield

lol, have you tried any "rogue" kit they sell, quality:rolleyes:
I believe it's £20 this year. Bit pricey, but still good experience and a good day out. Hopefully we'll get a few people up. I would have thought, seeing as you guys gave them so much business they'd at least have offered you some kind of discount.

Appropriately named though :D
I think "Cheap and Nasty" or "Competition Ready Apparel for the Professional"

I think the second one. While it might be cheap to make, it's not particularly cheap to buy. When I first started MMA I had some of their Viper gloves. I used them twice before they began to fall apart

Me and 2 others picked up a pair of rogue`s at the same time and within a week they`d all ripped.
I think it was us that was ripped lol.

yep me too. I made a highlight reel from the 3rd leg last year myself because I knew that the dvd would never emerge. Why do they bother filming it?
Apart from that though I always found their events to be well organised and fun, and Dale always struck me as being professional, although I know that a lot of people on this forum have experiences from way back when.
I asked at the third leg if they were going to release any of the footage and was told no, I don't get it, why film it at all. Loved the highlight though dude.

I participated in the last leg of the trials last year and found the event to be the best run 'local' martial arts event that I have ever been to. Everything ran like clockwork all day. Coming from a karate background, i expected to be hanging around for hours waiting to compete...!
I would strongly recommend it to anyone interested in having a go at amateur MMA

Yeah man, appreciate that you even caught both of my fights too. Dunno about getting down to that 70.5kg limit though, christ... especially when you have a craving for chinese! BBQ spare ribs, hmmmm!

glad people liked it. What i remember most about that day was pulling over in the service station on the way back and seeing the kfc full of fighters from the day, gulping back chicken wings like they were going out of fashion. I think people cut a lot more weight for amateur no-headshot events than most people would think.

I cant believe these sarcastic comments and insinuations against Dale Adams. I think its disgusting, he has been selflessly organising MMA events since the middle of last century and supplying kit, albeit at a cost, to the community for just as long.
I think we all need to stand up and recognise what he has done for us.

Hah, we did that as well but I just had the chicken popcorn. I wanted a big ass pizza from Pizza Hut!
I didn't actually cut any weight myself, if you are regarding cutting as sweating out water, which probably isn't really a good idea if it's same day weigh ins but I did lose 15 pounds with training and eating right over 8 weeks. All you need really. Got bang on 70.5kg on the day too!

I’ve competed in the Open Trials as have a few of the guys from my club. I think its one of the best organised events that I’ve been to. If you are going to do all three events + the finals it works out at less than £18 per event, with a guaranteed two fights at every event.
The spectator charges are similar to other events and at least the venue has bleacher seating and a reasonable café area. I think you can get a discount on spectator tickets if you pay in advance?
With regards to their kit, I have accounts with MMA Universe and a few other MA suppliers, and I find them one of the best to deal with. I’ve never had any problems ordering, and on the rare occasions where kit has been faulty – stitching coming undone – it has been replaced without any problems.

If you had a amature fight with semi pro rules (strikes to the head while standing), can you still compete?

It's amateur MMA, not semi pro.
Just got back. Another good event, well run and plenty of great fights... all good fun! ...and yes Stormrog I am the same Luke who was in my avatar that fought at Combat Sports Open, I was being sarcastic when I said it was someone else, good to meet you anyway :D
Anyone else go down or got any footage?

Made my way over the pond to see this mma amateur event in hereford today and had to pay £15 to watch!!! whats all that about? perhaps the organisers could reduce it to £5 and get more people in and perhaps get an atmosphere there!
Besides that the standard was ok i guess except for 1 guy who had 2 achilles locks in 2 of his fights! Anyone know who it was? let me know if you can, i would sure like to have a roll with him and not just for his good looks!!!

Yeah, it was the same guy who caught 'both' the guys I trained with. Sneaky fecker! Our fault really as we don't train much leglocks, but next time in training it'll be imanari style, lol.
Oh and you weren't the same guy (when I was signing in) who moaned in a rather loud voice about having to pay £15, haha. I can see where you're coming from though, it's a bit dear but worth it. Combat Sports has been going for years and is pretty much a brand name now so I guess they can charge whatever now.

the guy with the footlocks was Darrell James who is one of my guys.
he is a bastard to deal with when he gets hold of your leg:D
was a good event but i nearly passed out when they charged £15 to be a spectator:mad:

Darrell not done MMA since June last year due to his mrs having their first child so was good for him to get back on the mat.
hopefully he can get a few more amateurs this year then step back up to semi pro

I was there today along with a load of the boys from Bristol Impact Gym.
It was a really great day all round. Some awesome fights, and really well organised.
Hopefully I'll be getting involved in the next round.

...if that's the case, then what ever happened to the last few years DVDs?
It's seems the last one released was back in 2004, so it doesn't fill me with hope that this years will be out any time soon!

Yeah! Especially when they didn't allow anyone else to take videos of the fights (they tried that on us!). We were talking about this on the way back. They'd make a fair bit of money off DVD's cos 70% of the people competing would probably want DVD's of the event anyway. Bit shitty that they don't even make the effort with that. Just Video it regardless without them seeing, it's all good IMO.

Yeah, even made an announcement to say we couldn't film... Bit crap that.
Good thing my camera person (good'ol mum) ignored them and got one of my fights!
They were filming though, and I've been told they were definitely filming at last years event too, so it's really surprising that the DVD's haven't been released.
I'd buy one for sure, and I'm sure plenty of others would too.
Whilst well organised, I've got to say that the G&S event was ever so slightly better.
Where abouts is G & S based exactly? Is it same rules as Combat Sports? May be worth paying a visit, bash up some Welsh guys, hehe!

^here's the website.
It's basically the same rules except there's some slight variations to the neck crank rule and no jumping into the guillotine.
It was also fought in a ring instead of just on mats, which made it an interesting experience!

How did your lads do in the event Luke? Look forward to rolling with you guys again over the summer.

Not too bad. I got a Win via triangle, but got subbed to the other guy I fought by guillotine from guard. Well gutted as I did have a triangle on him at the start.
Simon got a win (via Armbar) and a loss (footlock), Jon got a draw and a loss (footlock to the same guy who fought Jon). Hopefully the videos should be up on youtube at some point!

Sounds like you guys had a good time regardless. Leglocks can be a bastard if you don't drill them.....at least you didn't get twistered...hehe! :D

Haha! Indeed... I was happy with my performance though, I felt a lot more confident this time round, committed a lot more with strikes and leg kicks and stuck to the game plan. Good time and certainly a learning experience! You'll have to come down with us next time! :D
