I'm not sure, is it legal to take someone to the floor with a choke as demo'd in this vid? I thought you had to attempt a takedown to enter newaza, but my knowledge of judo rules are rusty

Looks legal enough as you are not throwing with a strangle on. However it looks as if you would be dragging to the ground so would receive a shido unless looking to score from you sacrificing yourself.
Grips look too poor for judo though

Wouldn't it be considered Hikikomi, which i thought is only legal in Kosen style (and BJJ, which is the same thing ;) )
I think it would be precluded under the IJF rule about falling to the mat?

Keith Owen is showing a move on his DVD of favourite BJJ moves - NOT Judo favourite moves :D
Whether or not this move is legal in Judo is another thing entirely- his DVD is about his favourite moves.
In BJJ :D
Please read the label

And your contribution to answering my question was what exactly?
I fail to see what you've achieved other than appear facetious, as I did not ask where the video came from, who made it or how he felt about the moves demonstrated.

Yes you did hywel, you started the thread by asking would this move be legal in Judo, when in fact this DVD is centred around BJJ not Judo - if you have watched the dvd, does Mr Owen say 'these are my favourite moves I use in Judo?' He is not saying 'use this sub in a Judo match' is he?? It's one of his fave moves he uses when training in BJJ!!!!!!
Close but no cigar.

Once again mr fishface, hywel did not say it was a judo move, he just asked if it would br legal in judo. Either way it looks pretty rubish, but works well:D

Carl, what are you on about? Hywell presumably saw a bit of BJJ and thought that it could be implemented into his judo. He rightly questioned the legality (it is "illegal" but could be adapted for it not to be). And then you state it is a BJJ video not judo so the question is pointless.
Secondly the move does look a bit shit, however it doesnt matter how shit something looks, it matters how effective it is.

It is a pretty effective move but I prefer using the opponent's own collar from the knee ride position to do the baseball bat style choke.

Exactly. And I asked myself the same question.

what has that got to do with judo?

Unless you aren't allowed to choke your opponent with his own collar in Judo, then probably not much :) I haven't done a Judo grading for a few years, can you use their own collar to choke them with Chris??

What gave u that impression?
You asked me what has doing the choke from knee ride got to do with Judo, so I thought u couldn't choke with their own collar, so I thought I'd ask you.

Earlier on in the thread carl you were implying that this move is solely for BJJ (exactly what it says on the tin) then you place it into a judo context, you then wonder why I get frustrated,.

Sorry only just seen this. Officially it is illegal to judt draw some1 into groundwork without any attempt to throw; therefore if you were repeatedly attempting it at the speed shown in the demo then it would be obvious and you would most likely be penalised.
On a 1 off done with speed and/or disguised as a kind of sumi-gaeshi or yoko-tomoe-nage then there is no reason that it wouldn't be allowed; this type of thing happens all the time and many good groundwork players have their own tricks to get the guy on the deck without having to engage standing up.
Some serious bragging rights if you catch some1 with that; it looks shit but on the same token the competition video shows plenty of people tapping with it!
