To index finger, had xray today and the consultant at the NHS thinks its doing fine but im no so sure. My knuckle has moved pretty noticeably and when i make a fist my index finger rotates in. Worried about how the fist will stand up when i fight again. Anyone have or know of similar injuries.

Have you asked your consultant the same question? Was it a spiral fracture? has it been wired or just potted? Generally speaking if your cnslt is happy with it and you can make a full fist - you really are doing pretty good. Whether you get soft tissue irritation around that area is something that remains to be seen - its not how it stands up in a fight thats the issue but the training - just take it steady and dont rush things - you may well get ref'd to a specialist hand physio, if not ask about it.

I broke my 'little' one originally about 10 years ago.... its gone a couple of times since so obviously isnt as strong!
But as long as I wrap up my hands tight it seems to be OK.
Its squashed up tho & looks a mess when I make a fist & just looks flat

I've done a couple of mine and they have taken a while to heal. My hand rotates in but only slightly now and it doesnt affect my punching.

I have had this happen exactly the same in two separate incidents 2 different metacarpals. My hand is slightly deformed 2 knuckles and 2 fingers. You must have had a pretty clean break as they would have put pins & wires in. You need to keep away from anything that puts stress on the hand until you are 100% recoved. Mine is fine now any can train to 100%.

It sucks mate, but it does heal okay... I did this..

to my hand fighting in March '07 and it's fine now.. I can punch no probs but I sometimes struggle with twisting motions (i.e. baseball bat choke) but otherwise stronger than before I think..
Just make sure it IS rested, very important ;) make sure you exercise it once it heals a bit though, open closing fist/them chinese metal ball things and once its fairly strong again, grippers.. i found doing those helped it recover immensly. Other than that all you can do is make sure you get plenty of calcium in your diet - Strangly enough I judged how much it was healing by if I could open a door or not lol, if you think it IS broken go to a walk in or something and insist on a x-ray.

I was seeing a hand physio at a different hospital about a soft tiisue injury to the knuckle on that hand before and this is the one that i have broke. The consultant did seem happy but it wasn't pinned and i when i complained about the finger turning in he said we will look at it in 2 month to see if it is a problem. There is definatley more soft tissue damage, they have given me some exercises to do but to be honest the phsyio they ahve given me is really quite bad. I will see my doctor and get a referal to teh other hospital i went to for the old injury as they were a lot better. Can wrap up really well for the training and were mma gloves under boxing gloves to limit hand damage but worried that when i fight for real it might break again.

I have broken 3 metacarpals, one of them twice in different places.
All were left to heal on their own, as i didnt get much sympathy at the hospital. most of them are not too bad now but 1 was a pretty bad break where both ends of the broken bone were shattered, all i got was tubigripwhich i couldnt get on anyway because of the swelling.
i was niave then about hand injuries and just never went back to hospital, as a result my hand is quite mishapen.
the bad one now 15 years on gives pain most days and and my hand generally is weak and uncomfortable. if i overdo it i have quite abit of pain.
my advice to anyone with metacarpal breaks is insist on seeing a specialist and insist on wiring/pinning if the break is out of line or more than a 30 degree angled break.
also definately rehab the hand afterwards

I have broke my 5th metacarpal twice now.
First time i didn't goto the docs for a few days and they said it's too late best leave it heal on it's own.
Second time it went in the same place and i had to saty in hospital for them to straighten it out the following morning. They then put my hand in a brace to prevent it from moving and fixed my hand in a fist position.
Still not 100% straight but i have now problems with it now. I didn't want any pins and this is the best they could do.
They did offer a plate but that in my opinion is just going to cause future problems.
Get it reset and then take it easy on that hand.
I allways wear wraps without fail now on that hand.
