Excellent, I'll try to get some kids to enter this (there is a severe shortage of kids grappling comps!).

Just a couple of questions;

7 mins for the kids finals... do you think that may be a bit too long for kids??

Why do you choose to go with the ADCC idea of the first half of the fight being no points? I never understand this and think all it does is encourage stalling.

Edit: I've just added the details of this to our club website and will print a poster out later.

I feel the same. Gonna be a teacher soon and looking to set up a school jits club, but there is a real shortage from what I can see.

Missed the last one but I'm sure a fair few of us from the Sweatbox will venture over from the Sweatbox

Rob, will be great if you can bring some kids along, we have about 8 competing from our club. We really hope it will build up well as you are all right in the lack of comps for kids, its a real shame. Also, thanks for adding it to your site :)

We go with the no points for the first part because I think it promotes submission attempts without worrying about losing points. As far as I've seen, it makes a more entertaining match with more risks being taken. I'm sure there are some negatives to it as well but its worked well so far :)

Will be good to see you guys from Sweatbox down again, was a great turnout last time.

What do you guys think of a 71kg weight class? Although its topical to me, I've never been happy with the 10kg jump or so between the lighter weights

11kg is a huge difference, especially at lighter weights. 71 sounds like a good idea. 83 would be good too, but it all depends on how many people enter.

Having the kids finals be 7mins seems crazy to me. That is a long time for kids to fight, especially as there is no chance they will finish by sub.

I'm all for a 71kilo weight class.... gives me an incentive to lose the extra 2 kilos I'm carrying at the moment!

We'll be up for that-can't wait! Will get a poster up at COMA this week and bring some of the boys along to join in.

To big a jump but i think 73 sounds better. or exactly split the difference. I think there should be a lot of folk going to this one. so would make sense to have smaller weight brackets.

As no one has responded to me about it before, I want to ask again;

Is 7 mins really reasonable for the kids finals? I'm assuming they will have had 2 or 3 matches prior to the final, which will all be 4 mins. As kids won't be using subs all their fights are guaranteed to go the full time, it seems like a lot for kids. 7 mins is adult purple belt time!!

I have considered this Rob (sorry for not replying before) and I think you're very right. I am going to keep all the matches 4 mins :)

Rob T
14-07-2008, 03:08 PM
Thanks for that, I think 4 mins is a good time for kids. I know most comps do 2 or 3 mins which can be a bit short. 4 allows time for a comeback victory.

Cheers for responding and considering my point :)

I don't often get the opportunity to go to grappling tournies, so I'm particularly looking forward to going to this event. Leigh and Serena have put a lot of effort into making this a fun and well run event; should be good!

Thanks warlord, will be good to see you there :)

Just to clear up a point though, the grappling competition is being run my me alone in affiliation with VT Jiu Jitsu as I no longer run the gym. Leigh is still reffing though, obviously a major part of the day :)

I will check the number of females and post later today.

Thanks again for all the interest in our competition, hopefully with all your help it can be even more successful than last time!!!

We definitely have a few females this time so if you're thinking about coming, it should be worth it. I may have a go myself depending on how chaotic things are lol.

Still time for entries everyone, I will be taking online entries until Friday 1st August and also entries on the day up till 10am for juniors and 12pm for Adults. Don't miss out!!!

Anyone going from Bristol that might have room in the car for one more?
I'm thinking I might skive off work and come along if there's space.

lol, 2 years training dude!!

Otherwise you could have some guy who has been training for 10 years entering the novice... "Oh, I've never competed before, should I have done advanced?"

Thanks for the offer mate, but I've just realised today that I'm working the Harbour festival.. so there's no chance in skiving.. bugger.

I train all over the place, but mainly at Bristol Impact Gym, and Bristol Dojo.
I should have said hello on Weds last week as I was at the Sweatbox, but thought it might be a bit creepy! haha.

Is the kids weigh-in at 9 or 10?

It says 10 above but some parents I spoke to yesterday seemed to think it was 9.

Cheers.

So the kids divisions won't start until after 10 yeah?

MMA Girl
01-08-2008, 01:42 PM
Nope, not a chance. The kids rules meeting will be at 10.15 am and they will need to have weighed in before that. Hoping for first match at 10.40 :)
