For my own use and also hopefully later for public access, I'm trying to knock up MMAliens Mum and a database of all Welsh MMA, Muay Thai, wrestling, cross-training and reality-based training clubs, groups and gyms in Wales.
I've made fairly good in-roads just through personal contacts and a bit of internet scavanging but I'm short (on cock, before anyone else says it...) on many details and there are other smaller clubs tucked away training in isolation that I know fuck all about.
So, could anyone and everyone send me a list of where they train, with who and in what.
Also, could them very same people prepared to get off their arse and help me out, throw me details, rumours, legends of other gyms that they know of or suspect that they exist.
Again, I'd rather recieve to many/duplicate emails than fuck all...

Cheers in advance,

Paul Jenkins.

Cheers for the info, guys.
Spoke to Godders this week and the prototype WFA forum should be up and running this week. All paid for by the guys who came to the first open mat.

I've got around 16-18 clubs listed in the South Wales area so just going to find out and fill in the exact details for each club and then make the list fully available for public access via the website.

Mark, I've been trying to get up to the Merthyr gym since Kevin Reed went up there for a session a while ago and said they're a good bunch of guys. Might be up this month sometime if thats alright with you...?

Don't be lazy, sit in on a session and find out for yourself.. anyone can say ''yes it's awsum'' or ''nahh it's not'' and you turn up and it's not good or you don't go but it's actually really good.. but you'll never know unless you see for yourself.. don't rely on others, afterall it's YOU who want train..

Maesteg freestyle i ran by Karl Priece who is a very good boxer. He's had a few MMA fights too and has done pretty well. A few good fighters at the camp too such as Ryan Osgood who has built up a good semi pro record, brad thomas and Joe Jones who also train at GB swansea. they are both good on the ground. nicky walsh who is a decent light heavey weight fighter and London shoots mike edwards 10-2-0 who pops in now and again.

Does anybody know of anything up my way? I live on Anglesey, I've never done MMA before - I did a bit of Muay Thai before I started seeing my Mrs, wanna get back into something and it's MMA I wanna do.

I have no idea where there are any gyms, I heard there is one in Rhyl and one in Wrexham but that's way too far for me to travel without my own car ATM. I don't think there are any on Anglesey otherwise I'd have probably found it by now... but anybody know of any around Bangor?

Thanks ya sheep shaggers! :D

I think Mike Edwards from maesteg runs some classes, I think CACC wresting but may be mistaken. If not always welcome to pop down to treorchy. www.rhonddabjj.com we offer gi and no gi BJj, Submission wrestling, muay thai, boxing, strength and conditioning.

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a MMA gym in or near the Pontypridd area that is suitable for beginners, I do weights and cardio so I'm reasonably fit but I have zero experience of fighting.
I live in Pontypridd which is pretty much half way between Cardiff and Merthyr so I'd be able to travel as far as merthy or cardiff to train, or anywhere else near by- Caerphilly or Rhondda for example.
Ideally, I'm looking for a full time MMA gym, but a part time type set up would be fine or somewhere that just specialises in one aspect e,g boxing, mauy thai or BJJ
I keep hearing of a gym called "Hill Tribes" but every address I have found for them, I have visited and they are not there./..do they actually exist?
There are plenty of MMA promotions in wales e,g Valley Of Kings, Merthyr Mayhem...all these guys that compete at these events must be training at a full time gym somewhere...but where are these elusive gyms?
Sorry if my question has been answered, I read through the thread in a rush so Iv possibly missed something...

The MAT Academy is in Church Village and they have Lewis Long training out of there. I teach jiu-jitsu there twice a week (brown belt) and Lewis teaches Thai, wrestling and MMA. There is also an awesome conditioning coach.

My jiu-jitsu club also have loads of other classes locally... Trefforest, Cardiff, Merthyr and Caerphilly. See www.chrisreesacademy.com for full info... most successful club in Wales :-)

Thanks Rob
The MAT Academy seems to be just what I'm looking for and I could deffinatly make it to a few of your BJJ classes. I train weights in Treforest at one-to-one...I had no idea there was a BJJ class there on thursdays and saturdays!
I should be able to make it to a few cardiff classes too, work and traffic permitting.
2pm-3.30pm saturdays at The MAT will be an easy class for me to make it to too, and the mauy thai on the sunday also.
Just a couple of questions mate...
Are the classes suitable for complete beginners?
Should I try and bring a friend so I can practice with someone on my level?
Will I need to buy a Gi from day 1? If not what would be suitable clothing? I'm thinking MMA shorts and a scruffy old tshirt, maybe with a rash vest or something underneath?...cheers

On saturdays I could probably go to The MAT class and then the Treforrest class back to back...I suspect I'd need to build up my conditioning/fitness before even attempting that though!

Rob T
31-08-2012, 01:09 AM
All classes suitable for all levels mate. But if you want to bring a mate, always the more the merrier :)

You don't need a gi straight away but I recommend training in the gi as soon as possible. The MAT Academy lessons tend to be all nogi and the one-to-one gym classes are mostly people training in the gi but always a few nogi every lesson. MMA shorts and old t-shirt is perfect for first class.

If you have monthly membership at one-to-one the classes are included! :)

Hey spork,
Ive been training at the MAT for about a year now and done quite a bit of training with Rob and Lewis, i came from having no BJJ or MMA training at all, (being a complete novice) and i feel ive come a long way in no-gi thanks to them. There is a good variaty of guys & gals training there; all ages, weights and skills. If your interested the best way to keep in the loop of when there are lessons is on facebook, its updated every day with the times.

Hope this helps
