he is obviously a gifted grappler - but the fastest growing name in BJJ he is not - which was your original post -
Given the fact that he trains predominatly without the gi the reason most guys know Edgar Cano is -
a) for his win over Royler
b) his rubber guard - good as it is
and c) because that cock Rogan goes on about TwisterSide Control every fucking round of everymatch at every UFC!

Just recently got back from filming with a bunch of BJJ guys, Eddie Bravo, Marc Leimon, John Lewis, Kron Gracie.. All were excellent at what they did and all seemd to have diiferent twists, angles, and so on to offer to BJJ/MMA.
Not sure about anyone else but out of these guys, they all have made a mark in BJJ but I think maybe Kron is one to watch for up and coming. At 19yrs old, his BJJ skills were very solid.
I think Bravo has 'made' a pretty good mark already, and think his style will continue to cross over into MMA maybe more than the others. If its BJJ though, might be different with the gi.

Ridiculously, he says its to get more grip for rubber guard. He also says you shouldn't train with a gi for MMA because the grips aren't realistic. Last time I checked you can't wear gi bottoms in most MMA orgs.

he spoke a little about the gi and his ideas on it in his seminar. He likes gi pants (trousers) as Rob said for the traction when in guard. Difficult to get the same amount of control, when really sweaty otherwise.
You can wear Gi trousers in ADCC (or used to be able to). A lot of no gi grappling in the states allow them apparently! The subject of gi trousers in MMA came up and EB said he'd love peole to be able to wear them, but they can't. He said that ankle supports and knee sleevs wiith long are allowed though!! or even the tights that Shinya Aoki wears (again apparently to help with traction when sweaty. maakes a little sense
Rob T

I love rubber guard, just been starting to use it recently as I've now got the flexability for it.
sol_dave
03-07-2008, 12:28 PM
I like Eddies system but the whole Royler thing is so tiresome, he studied every one of Roylers passes etc He developed a whole game just to beat Royler then got beat in the next round.
Rob T
03-07-2008, 12:51 PM
He did tap Royler though. Royler, who had never had a point scored against him in ADCC. Just studying his game wouldn't be enough to beat him. Getting lucky wasn't enough to beat him. Eddie Bravo tapped Royler, end of story.
Obviously he has milked that as much as he possibly could. He's made himself from it, started a hugely successful BJJ system and school network and released numerous instructionals. You can't fault someone for wanting a life like that, he just managed to make it happen.

I think eddie bravo deserves full credit for his rubber guard, and no matter what people think of him as a person they can't deny that his system has definately made an impact on bjj/mma.
I dont put too much focus on him tapping Royler (which is a great achievement) more so on how the things he does teach work very well and also his half guard stuff is really good too.
J-Sho
03-07-2008, 01:17 PM
I don't think his system has had a significant impact on the elite BJJ players of today. The only (retired) people who use a game like that are JJ Machado, who taught him a number of the elements of his system we see today and Nino Schembri, who was using his insane flexibility/busting out gogoplatas etc before Eddie had even got his black belt. He hasn't really produced any major gi or no gi competitors on the US circuit afaik (not to the extent Laimon has in comparison).
The impact on MMA is questionable, what top level fighters has he created? The best examples of rubber guard style game in MMA is nothing to do with him at all (Shinya Aoki).
To his credit his instructionals are of excellent quality and flow a lot better than many i have seen. He is by all accounts, a great teacher.
Undeniable tho is the fact he tapped the greatest Gi & No Gi player of the time at his weight (Royler was a 4 time mundials champ and 3 time ADCC champ who, as mentioned, had never been scored on in ADCC until that point).
Putting their teaching ability to one side, in terms of Sports BJJ, Galvao is one of the best p4p bjj players at the moment, probably only second behind Cobrinha. Eddie beat other good guys other than Royler such as Gustavo Dantas and Alan Teo, but Galvao is totally on another level. There is no comparison.

Im not into all this BJJ shit and all the Politics. i have no interest in the sport what so ever. But i do believe Eddie has trained with Aoki in the past.

Rob T
03-07-2008, 01:30 PM
Only reason I'd put Galvao ahead of Cobrinha is that Galvao has had more impact in the absolute division (obviously he has the size advantage for this, but still).
JSho, Dustin Hazelett's use of rubber guard in the last UFC was pretty good, have you seen it? I have also heard rumours that Dan Hardy has a good rubber guard. It's still a relatively new system (I don't think Bravo has any black belts under him yet?) but I do think it will start to see more use in top level MMA soon.

Nothing here is about politics, I've never been into that. If I was, I wouldn't have picked Galvao!!
Eddie Bravo has trained with Aoki to show him rubber guard, yeah. Some of the session was done for the Japanese media, I'm sure the vids will still be up on Youtube and/or Dailymotion.

03-07-2008, 01:36 PM
Eddie made a thread about Hazelett's rubber guard on the UG, but he isnt a 10th planet guy. Eddie also mentioned Dan Hardy and Matt Horwich as guys with a good rubber guard and told people to watch out for them in the UFC soon (Does this mean Horwich is UFC bound?)
the Politics comment was just off the cuff about me not taking an interest in BJJ, nothing to do with this post.

I was abusive because that guy is clearly retarded in some way there is no way that Eddie Bravo would ever smash Galvao. I know from good sources that how dedicated and disciplined athlete Galvao is, therefore he has very strong chances to succeed in MMA. Galvao has been working hard on his boxing and soon you will see the results when he debuts in MMA. Galvao has trained with Wanderlei Silva and Paulo Filho and both has said that he is like a machine! So have you trained with him to say anything?

Everybody afraid of Galvao
World champ debuts in MMA tonight
The announcement of his MMA debut was made by Andre Galvao on GRACIEMAG.com. Now it’s time to bring to the ring all of the prestige he has earned over the years fighting in gi competitions. The black belt will enter the ring tonight in the Fighting 4 Kidz event. Ironically, despite the fact that Galvao is making his premiere, it wasn’t easy for the promoters to find someone willing to take him on. According to promoter Jason Weiner, there were several fighters who declined the invitation. The only one who did accept to fight the world champion was Jeremiah Metcalf, whose record shows nine wins and four losses. Here’s the card:
Andre Galvao vs Jeremiah Metcalf
Bryan Baker vs Gary Padilla
Justin Schalk vs a definir
Vince Ortiz vs Dustin Rhodes
Davon Clark vs Andrew Lang
Justin Wilcox vs Gabe Ruediger
Seth Dikun vs Vanoscar Penvaroff
Mychal Clark vs Mike Kyle

Agree with all this. esp the lockdown is an old judo move (but so is all of BJJ) I like Bravos book on the rubber guard and the way he sets his game plan out rather than just a bunch of techniques, Actually am attending his seminar in august so will post after that about his coaching.
My only concern is that bravo claims his system is the best for MMA but he has never fought in MMA, I do feel he should put his money where his mouth is. I like a lot of BJ Penns stuff esp because he has been there and done it when it comes to MMA.
Don't understand the random hate of Bravo and the nuthugging the only way to develop is to take new information/techniques and to see if they work for you.
It was a big result for Bravo tapping Royler but you have to say Royler is the better grappler, 1 result doesn't change an amazing record completly
