What would you guys think would be most appropriate for children to learn? i've had discussions with others as to what would be deemed safe. I feel that its ok for them to be learning arm bars, triangles etc.. but others seem to disagree as you don't want them to be applying them to others n the playground? what do you guys teach your kids?

my opinion would be no neck cranks or twisting leg locks. i dont see a reason why they cant cover everything else. its the parents responsibility to make sure they dont do it in the playground. i give my 10 yr old nephew lessons and i've told him i'm going to stop teaching him if i find out he has been doing it at school.

depends on the maturity of the child. many parents don't exercise any parental responsibility so unfortunately you'll have kids trying out these things on the playground.

I agree with Widge - when my boy gets older I'll also be teaching him single/double leg slams, kicking/punching combos, flying knees, stomps / soccer kicks ala Wanderlei Silva.... :)
My boy is gonna be the Playground Fighting Championship champion - what a great idea for a fight promotion -discuss!
On a serious note, this is a tricky one... I remember a few years ago when my niece was being bullied at school by a few lads older than her, all I did was teach her some very basic Muay Thai ie. punching combos, elbows & knees and playwrestled her to get her used to grappling, as well as enrolling her in the local Judo club - not so much that she'd actually use it, but more to give confidence - I think with kids confidence is the main thing and bullies tend to stay away from kids who are confident in themselves.
Tough one though -if the child was to use the techniques and mess someone up, you could end up being in the sh*t.... But then again everyone wants their child to be able to look after themselves - tough one though.

Im serious, if kids want to learn to fight, teach them all the tools they can use.

Getting my boy back in to kickboxing and he wants to start jujitsu but got told to put him in to judo first to give him a good base before he gets in to jujitsu.
I'd hate to here was going round choking the other kids out or trying to armbar them so I'll go with the advice and get him in to judo first.
I think you have to look at how mature they are and drum it in to them the importance that they are not to go round doing chokes and other things in the school yard cos the blame will fall on you shit but true

my lads 4 and a half (5 at the end of October as he keeps reminding me) and does BJJ and 'kick-boxing' but this is something i've been very conscious about so I've only just started introducing weapons training - heel hooks though not until he's a purple belt.
