right i have a weird problem, when i run on the treadmill at the gym, i can only jog at a very very slow pace, (just above walking speed), or i get pains in my shins, i think its shin splints, but when i run outside, either on roads, grass, tracks or woteva, i'm usually fine! provided i start slow, and warm up for about half a mile, but even if i start real slow n build up on the treadmill for ages, as soon as i get into any kind of pace, my shins pagger! i was wondering wether either anyone has experienced anything like ths? or knows if i could be running incorectly on the treadmill or wether iam jus in fact weird? thanx

get a decent set of asics gel trainers mate , and do some stretches before going on the running machine , problem sorted !! you might wanna wait til the pain goes ( 7 daysw or so ) before you start running again!!

I suffer from Shin splints also but I have long calves and high arched feet.
Gel feet can help (Asics) etc and sometimes you may have bad posture.
I find it better to bounce on my toes rather than flat footed which causes issues.
If I get them, I find them random intervals - like even when I'm not doing anything or are doing simple things, they can shoot up my leg.
Both inside and outside.
My training partner has seen a wotsit atrition and apparently there is some knuckle rubbing thing which "pops capsules of air" on the leg.
How much help or true that is, I have no idea.
I can't run on an inclined treadmill without suffering with shin pains after. It also aggravates my sciatica. Good, supportive trainers are really important.

Could be a lot of things - depends on your running style etc, hard to give advice on the internet. The suggestions on this thread are good and relevant for certain problems but not others.
Whereabouts on the foot do you strike the ground when you run?

shin splints!!! ooo god, I've had problems with my shins from an early age, mostly due to having the shittest running technique on the planet; running on concrete; poor shoes and overtraining. However, though they are a pain from my experience, and I aint no professional, I think the pain can be nulified with a few simple things. The first being go get a good pair of running shoes, as a few of the guys have mentioned the likes of asics and new balance are good and it will be money well spent in the long-term. The shin is always the worst when it is not warm, we still have a tiny minute muscle layer over the shin called the soleus..and like other muscles it has to be warmed up. You can do this my moving your ankle up and down (dorsi-flexion and plantar-flexion) or rub cryogel, tiger balm over them. Check your running technique - it may be that you could be more flat footed than the average person....for that reason your shoes will need insoles in to prop your heel a tad higher. This will minimise the impact of shock when your foot hits the ground. Also, become more "bouncier" on your feet when running, it is easy to just run on flat feet but you will reap the benefits. If the treadmill is given you shit, try running on a softer surface...a smooth football, cricket pitch for example. Shin splints wont just affect your shins, if not taken care of sooner you will start to get back ache, and the stress of your shin will move down to your achillies tendon, and it could rupture. Ive ruptured my achillies, and thats some nasty shit you dont want

I've had same problem with shin splints, so I had a physio watch me running on a treadmill to diagnose it. In my case, I was "over-pronating" i.e. when my foot hits the ground it tilts inwards so that the arch of my foot begins to come into contact with the floor, which in turn pulls/twists the muscle on the front of the shin causing the pain. (a footprint is usually 5 toes and outside edge of foot, my flat-footed footprint would include some of the arch).
No cure as such, just had to buy the right kind of trainer - not all Asics types will be suitable, only ones designed for over-pronators as they have a built up wedge underneath the arch to keep your foot upright/physically prevent your foot rolling inwards. First time you run with them on it feels like you're treading on something but it goes away and my shin splints are okay now. Hope that helps!

lots of good advise thanks guys, i think iam guna go to a running shop on saturday and get some proeffesional advise, as i understand it is nearly impossible to diagnose a problem through looking at a computer screen, lol thanx for the info, and i think it could be that my running technique is too flat footed, so guna check that out thanx
