Can someone enlighten me why its not advised to eat a meal later than 9 or 10? What does the body do differently to eating a meal at say 8? Am trying to get my body fat % down, so any advice would be good.

I think its just because not many people are active at that time of night, so the calories are stored as fat while you sleep. Im sure you can eat low calorie foods. But if you eat a couple of hours before sleeping then at least you have some time to burn some calories.

Its not the time thats important its your level of activity at that time. If you are inactive at that time and about to go to sleep overnight then the metabloism will slow right down to your resting Basal Metabolic Rate and excess calories could be stored as fat.

The link between eating late and fat storage is not a million miles from the truth, as not many people are that active after 9pm. Have your last meal 90mins before bed and avoid carbs and fat in it.

cheers mate, think eating late depends on the person, for example I try not to as I store fat very easily but I would recommend it to a hard gainer

What would you recommend for eating when getting in from training? A couple of nights a week I get back about 10 and end up having my tea then and going to bed about 11.30.I usually have carbs in the meal though.I struggle eating when I get in from work though before training. Have tried eating bigger lunches but it's not always possible when at work.
Would it be better to have a smaller meal before training then something with protein but no carbs when I get in from training?

I know, hoping he will appear and give me some good advice :D

Thing is ,I don't always feel that hungry after training at night. If I don't eat though I just feel awful next morning and it takes me ages to get sorted for training that night!

Not to sure on this one, would still recommend getting some carbs in after training but not sure how much before bed. Think it may depend on the person (insulin senstivity etc).

Would possibly look at getting some dextrose in your post workout shake as soon as you finish training, as that will give you the quickly absorbed carbs you need with out the excess glycogen (sp?) being stored as fat.

I personally only eat some protein and a bit of veg after training but I do eat before I train

MikeyL,
what do you know about Insulin?
I understand it is all about controling your insulin levels?

Take a drink or solid source of simple carbs and protein to have as soon as you've finished training before you come home. Protien shake and a banana or with dextrose in it. Then yeah, eat protein and veg when you get home.

Alright mate,

Stapes is probably a lot better qualified than me when it comes to talking about fat storage vs insulin senstivity, but in a very, VERY basic way the leaner you are the better you deal with using carbs for energy therefore are less likely to store it as fat.

I dont really want to be spouting that much advice on the subject as im still only learing about nutrition for fighters, how and when they need carbs is very different from someone like me who is still trying to shed body fat.

Are you trying to cut, maintain, bulk, improve strength or just be a more all round bad ass in the cage? (cant help with the last one :p )

I am on a serious diet right now and exercise of course, but think I have genetic problems as I always eat well, dont drink and train hard etc. I seem to be able to helpo everyone get in shape apart from myself.
Think I may have Thryoid issues, my sister has an underactive Thryoid.

Ah ha! That makes sense. I have started having a drink after training- got the SiS Rego recovery at the moment.

Ah ha! That makes sense. I have started having a drink after training- got the SiS Rego recovery at the moment.

The carbs on Rego are Maltodextrin and Fructose, while the protein is Soya Isolate (slow acting).

If you want to stick to a low budget buy Dextrose from the chemist or Holland & Barret for £1.50 per 500g, and get a cheap whey protein powder made from whey isolate and concentrate. You'll recover a lot better and feel better for the next days training.

Cheers for that! I did have some my protein whey powder but got the SiS sport stuff from a bike shop.

I had the Holland and Barrat whey and was pretty nasty! But yeah got used to the myprotein whey after a while- made me burp lots at first.

myprotein is really good. I love it. I mix it with their waxy maize starch and my recovery is superb on it.

Yeah steer clear of Holland & Barrett made stuff it is awful, cheaply made, out of date absolute shite made by a large company just to make money. Horrid and poor performance. Also Protec satchets.

Going to get some more I think once I have used up the SiS stuff, won't be long as it's only a small tub.

isnt the SIS stuff mainly carbs? Just a guess with it being cycle stuff (replacing glycogen etc)

Lou
27-09-2008, 07:52 PM
Typical Ingredients

Maltodextrin (produced by partial hydrolysis of a special variety of maize, 98% glucose polymers), Soya Protein Isolate, Fructose, Vitamins and Minerals, Xanthan, Lecithin, Natural Flavour and Colouring, Aspartame.

Its used by cyclists but also other athletes. I am mixing in cycling with my cross training whenever I can. Did 30 miles on the road today, which isn't much.I don't feel hungry at all now just fatigued and back in the gym tomorrow.

I remember readining you shouldn't eat 3 hours before you sleep because it stops your releasing of a growth hormone for muscle, etc.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but i just got a bike and been using it to get to training! How bloody awsome is it! Gets me good and warmed up, clears my head and saves me money! Oh and the ole' knees dont take a battering! Definatley recommend it, although im not sure how i'll fair in the Winter, what with Scotland becoming an ice rink for 3 months an all!

Lou

Yep,I love it, well when I get out anyway. These days with training I don't get out so much. It's excellent low impact training, and even better if you do interval style road training :D

Is it poss to cycle to training? I know its not always poss. I tend to do a lot of uphill on the way to training then as much downhil after training! :) Im needing to attach my lights i got from lidls onto the bike. Top quality lights for 5.99 due to a pricing error from the student on the till! Well i was'nt gonna say anything!:)

Mountain Biking could be a good bit of cross training, more muscle recruited due to uneven terain etc

Lou
06-10-2008, 01:55 PM
Definitely. Plus it's more fun as it's more dangerous :D Not been for ages as too busy with ohter training to get upto the lakes.

Going to try the protein straight after training tonight (finish at 9.30) then have just some chilli and salad when I get in (small portion). Had my quinoa and tuna for lunch so should be sorted. Stepped up my training now and added weights sessions so feel like I need to get it right now.
