When im just sub grappling i use it most of the time as it seems to open up more options like leg locks, taking the back, sweeps etc but for MMA i dont seem to use it as much for some reason,
How many people use it to effect in MMA and what differences do you make to your guard?
Any hints / tips / advice would be great.

I think its really good for like you say opening up subs, sweeps, standups. We are working it atm. I also think its good for mma but you have to be confident with it.

D, for MMA do you thing it is just confidence? as obviously there is the greater risk of being blasted upside your head.

Butterfly guard is a great position. But i dont think a lot of people like to use it, cause most of the sweep are from over/under control. So there is always some space for striking. Maybe not even that effective but a lot of people dont like to get hit.
In mma the butterfly guard needs to be like a attack on a street corner. YOu just hit it, and keep going. Fuck his base, sweep, keep going
I think, because 'rape position' being on your back with butterfly hooks, is a bad position for mma. Hardly any people are effective flat on there back with a butterfly guard. Your guard is your knees and if you are flattened out its cause easy to get past one of the knees.
Its much easier to be 'safe' cross you ankles around his back and play the closed guard game.
One of the few people i have seen excelent from there backs flattend out with butterfly hooks, even if it was grappling. Was JJ machado.
Btw, since im not a black belt dont take this post to serious. I might not be right.

when ever im 'butt scooting' towards a higher grade they tend to just pick my feet up and kind of smash pass me :( Its really hard to stay strong when they do that!
I tend to backward roll then shoot forward in a kind of double leg stylie...
damn! how hard is to explain a 'technique' on the tinternet!

But dont you find that people give space, base away etc when they start trying to hit you? Making sweeps and escapes easier. I have been made to feel helpless from top butterfly. I do think grips and your body position are the key points. Cant be arsed typing an essay. You know where we train, would be good to see you do some training!!!

Also as Nigel Benn used to say, if you have to take a shot to then get two back its all good. Id take 1 of yours for 2 of mine :-P

Isnt every guard a case off messing with his base and keep him defending ? if its spider gi, or closed guard nogi. If you dont ty him up, breakj his base. Any guard is g and p city.

You are probably leading with your legs. Your head should be in front of your ass... if they try to grab your feet you have to beat them to it and grip their sleeve/arm.

True that.
I think part off the problem is, that most of uss if not all learn the bjj stand up/keep him away kick.. And than get owned by higher people who just control the legs.

all guards can be used. the difference with no head shots is that in mma, you have to either clinch or keep moving - you can't fuck about just laying there

butterfly i use alot in mma training more than bjj (gi/nogi) it seem to unsetle the oponant testing there base etc wroks awsome with one over one under they seem to continue hitting your ribs alot on the one over but once i scoot out i seem to get half way to the back 50/50 then it's a fight for the back or sweep to therehalf guard
this threed just reminded me to use it more lol:)

I have started using butterfly a lot in classes, atm im sparring bigger heavier guys and i am starting to get more success with a more strong underhook, I think the sweep is good for heavier guys, triangles can be more sneaky with butterfly hooks as well all in all i would say it is becoming my new closed gaurd

as duch and leigh said, loose guard is bad guard and bad guard = pain city

pain city as in getting stacked hideously or just in general?
i wouldnt say a loose gaurd is bad as long as you keep it fluid

Fluid is good. Loose is not fluid. Loose is bad.
