Fighter/Coach Comments
Chris Rees (Gracie Barra Swansea) 'would DEFINATELY recommend this comp to anyone. Especially with the new rules regarding white belts only it is the perfect opportunity to get some competition experience.'
Serina Remedios (VT Jiu Jitsu) 'I would recommend them to anyone. Very well run and friendly.'
The Fighting Doc (Pedro Bessa Wales) 'Want to know how to run a comp, see Dave Coles and Simon Small at The Combat Academy.'
Scuba (Gracie Barra Swansea) 'The Hereford comp is a brilliant comp for beginners, you start off the knees so dont have to worry about takedowns . . . . . your guaranteed at least 2 fights even if you lose so you get some experience as well. Also if we have had any people from our club enter after a short period of training Dave and the guys have done their best to pair them with people of a similar experience.'
Rob (Gracie Barra Birmingham) 'The comps that Dave & Simon run in Hereford would be an ideal starter.'
Rob T (Gracie Barra Swansea) 'The Combat Academy run the only tournaments I know which have started and ended on time, every single event.'
Richard 'Shakey' Shore (Tillery MMA) 'I would recommend this to anyone, really good atmosphere with no attitudes, guarenteed several fights which cant be bad.'

Starting off on the knees is pretty weird..

Starting off on the knees is pretty weird..
Why?
It's a comp aimed at beginners, to allow them to get experience. The fights are only 3mins because that means the comps always start on time and end on time (I have been to probably 10 comps run by Combat Academy... they have never overrun). It also allows them to give everyone a minimum of 2 fights and is specifically a groundfighting comp.

as RobT says our comps are aimed at beginners
To give them more competition experience we guarantee all competitors a minimum of 2 fights. We also run a free additional masters category and open weight category. So thats a minimum of 3 fights for under 35's or a minimum of 4 fights for +35's if they do all available categories.
Some competitors have had upto 11 fights at our events.
We only have two mat areas and so to ensure we finish on time we limit the contest time to 3 minutes.
Starting from standing has more potential for injuries and for many fights it takes a minute or two for the fight to go to the ground.
Starting from the knees cuts out this time, we still have lots of subs even within the 3 minutes.

I think Dave is also looking for purple belts to enter this, trying to get enough to have a round robin pool of 5. So you get a guaranteed 4 fights I think?

No, blue belts can enter the open grade absolute
The purples will be an open weight by the sounds of it as well, can't wait to watch that!
dave coles

only white belts in the weight categories
masters will probably be for white and blue
masters can fight in the weight categories and the masters and the absolute if they want :-)
white belts can fight in their weight and the absolute, but priority will be given to blues for the absolute
absolute will be open to anyone, but the purples will have their own category if there are enough of them
you only pay £15 regarless of how many categories you do

The Event is now over half full, with entries received from the following academies
Akai Ryu Ju Jitsu
Gracie Barra Swansea
Combat Academy
Pedro Bessa
Bolton Catch
Maxt Academy
Renegades
Carlson Gracie Mataleo (Team Reveloution)
Andy Roberts BJJ
Warrior Kaste
The under 78kg category has only 5 spaces left, other categories are getting 'busy' so get those entry forms off.
Ideally we are looking for a total of 5 Purple Belts to compete in a round-robin / league format (so all will get 4 fights). We already have 2 confirmed and will offer free entry to the 3 purples who fill the bracket.
