If you want just training then try the gracie camp. We went and were very well looked after, you get breakfast and dinner as well as a great location not far from the beach. Really safe and you get taken to and from training at gracie barra included in the price. You also get some privates at the camp.

If you are going on your own there will normally be other people at the camp to hang around with. Plus you can get away with being english and not knowing any of the language, although if I go again I will learn some first.

Probably cheaper to do a hotel/hostel and just pay for training at barra but it's a nice easy option for your first trip.

Went for a month, when i was 17, a group of 4 of us rented an nice apartment in Niteroi, Rio. Trained with BTT, good experience.
Absolutley wonderful place.
Should imagine the Gracie place would be amazing as well.
Probably best to go in a group, to cut costs.

I trained at De La Riva, really ggod jits school and friendly guys too. Think I was paying 30 reis a wee, can't remember though.

If you go there speak to Ricardo as he will give you a proper rate, the staff in the Sports Centre try and charge you double.

lots of info here

http://www.thecombatacademy.com/BJJGuideToRio.html

I did another month over there this August, but be warned the article needs to be updated.

The cost of living over there has risen 10-20% and the exchange rate was a nightmare this year, I only got R$2.7 - 3.00 to the £, compared to nearly R$5 on my first trip.

let me know if you need any more info

dave

Dave, Im looking into hitting Rio for about 3 months next year around April time. Any up to date info would be much appreciated, especially when looking at accomodation, that's been the killer for me so far. Might need to drop it back to just 2 months :(

Fighters Only staffer, Strike and Submit European Champ and all round nice guy Pete Irving has visited Brazil a couple of times and is compiling something for a future issue that should give people an idea of what a training trip to Brazil is really like.

I'll keep you posted as to when it's going to be in the mag. You probably buy it every month already but you might want to get two issues that month :)

I used to live in Rio and trained at Gracie Ipanema with Marcelo Yogui. It's off Praca General Osorio. You'd be well close to the best beach + bars too.

There were insane numbers of blackbelts who were all very willing to help. There was one other gringo when I was there who said that in one or two gyms in the area the local lads could be less than welcoming / a little attitude. I can't vouch for this, just what I heard off him. what I can say is that Gracie Ipanema was friendly and Marcelo will also take you out and show you the town if you want - he helps sort accommodation out too.

I've heard some very good things about Yogi and his club there from various people.

We were treated pretty well when we were there, but you could tell a minority of the locals tried to go quite hard to see if you were up to training with them. Once they'd seen you a few times and saw you training hard you'd notice a change in them, similar to someone new coming to your gym and being a bit unsure what they've come for

That's precisely how i found it too. It seemed they kept their distance until you've been there a while. Think that's partly due to the location - as it's central Ipanema, they do get tourists 'trying' bjj for a couple of weeks then disappearing, which i imagine gets on their tits.

Did you ever role with Cafe? didn't myself, but liked watching him roll with some of the other blackbelts. Serious skills.
