Late at night I would try to stay away from carbs and sugar... fruit has sugar in so I would probably not bother although I don't think it is really a "bad" thing.

Nutrition expert would be best to ask me thinks...

Ive just munched my way through 6 poached egg whites and a tub of low fat cottage cheese. Perfect ratio of medium and slow release proteins before bed.

Had a whey isolate and simple carb drink after training at 10pm. As long as its straight after training when your body is crying out for nutrition then its ok.

Its when you take in carbs when you are about to go to bed (inactive) or have been inactive for a long period of time, ie. your body is no longer in such great need of nutrients.

If I end up training late at night I usually have a good helping of Low-Fat Cottage cheese and a couple of bananas. Either that, or, if Im not hungry; I down a Casein Protein shake, Casein makes me feel bloated as hell, but it's a good, slow burning protein source and it stops me feeling hungry.

When I finished late training - which was most nights I'd come home to big bowl of Curry (Chicken/Lamb/Veggie) and Rice/Chappattis with a big bowl of salad - best post training food you can get - fit for a king I tells ya!

Depends what time you finsh training and what time you go to bed.

If you finish training at 9pm then as I said, small serving of simple carbs and whey will be fine. Once you get homw, cottage cheese, eggs or caesin drink work wonders.

It depends a lot on your body type, metabolism and what your trying to acheive. By that I mean are you looking to add weight, cut weight or just maintain.

There is no hard and fast rule for everyone, I know guys who keep their carbs low all day so they can have a carb meal at night as they sleep better this way due to carbs helping release serotonin (the feel good hormone released after eating carbs or having sex!) which helps you nod off to sleep.

After training you should take in some carbs to replenish your glycogen levels along with some protein, if its late on and your eating around 9pm have some steak/fish/chicken with a spud and some fibrous veg like onion, mushroom, cabbage, broccoli, cucumber etc.

Fibrous carbs wont be stored as fat.

I finish training around 8.30 but get home for about 8.50-9ish.

Anything i can add that will make it more filling?

Thanks for the response

Great so cabbage is OK

Body type is ok but im soft around the stomach (the abs are underneath) ;)

Carrying most my weight there really. Cutting down for a comp in around 6 weeks but want to do it slowly and easy then late and starve myself like i normally do. My metabolism is no longer that great for some reason. My weight can go up and down 3-4 kgs weekly Ranging from 77-83

If your needing to add more food to your meals to fill you up but you are trying to lose fat then the following foods can be eaten freely due to them being so low in calories, with some of these you'll burn more calories digesting them than there is in them so in a way they are NEGATIVE calories!

Broccoli
Cabbage
Cucumber
Onion
Mushroom
Green Pepper
Asparagus
Beansprouts
Water Chestnut
Lettuce
Spinach
Chillies

If you chuck a load of these in the pan, cook with some olive oil and chillis have it with some chicken/steak/turkey/fish then you've got a really healthy filling low carb meal which will fill you up well.

Can you tell me why you think thsts a myth? Posting "thats a myth" doesn't help anyone and doesn't show that you know why its a myth, forums are full of guys who make statements without really knowing what they're on about.

If something contains 6kcals per 100g of fibrous carbs how can you not burn more calories as it passes through your system?

Dont worry pal, I think he is one of those guys.

He suggested complex carbs straight after training FFS.

There is no evidence either way as to whether certain foods are "negative calorie foods", but then I don't think that even matters.

The point is their energy content is so minimal that they don't make any real world contribution to energy intake when eaten in the amounts people generally eat them in and can therefore be considered "free" from calories.

Add to that if you eat lots of these sorts of veg they will fill you up and you will eat a lot less of more energy dense foods.

Although would you not consider waxy maise starch a complex carbohydrate? ;) lol
