As the title says.

I fancy watching some horror. Something genuinely scary rather then just gory/slasher crap. Any suggestions?

I am a bit of a horror geek, and it has been a pretty slow year for horror movies so far. Here are a few of my picks that people may have missed out on in the past few years (which may or may not be to everyone's tastes!):

Broken (by Simon Boyes and Adam Mason)
Inside (a French one also known as A L'Interieur)
Black Water
The Hamiltons
13 (Tzameti)
Frontier(s) (another French one also called Frontières)

If you fancy some light hearted type horror then you could check out:

Automation Transfusion
Mulberry Street
Feast
Botched

HAHA! That film is quality. I watched that film when I was 10 and Remember the intro being quite scary but nearly cried with laughter at the rest. Loved the zombie baby scene!

I never usually find films scary but I went to see Dark Water (Japanese version) at the cinemas and thats really the only the film that creeped me out a bit. I actually don't mind films with subtitles either, they make me concentrate more!

I don't think films are actually scary anymore. I was just looking at a last of so called "scary" films, and yes the majority of them would scare the shit out of you if you were 12 or under, but now it just doesn't work.

There's no such thing as a ' scary ' horror film anymore for horror fans. We have all become desensitized to them.

Session 9, The strangers, Mirrors etc.... All shite.

I have to watch wacky fucked up japanese shit nowadays. The house remake looks fucking quality I have been looking forward to that for a while now !!!

I think House is a remake. but ive not seen the original.
I was actually having a conversation at work today about horror films. We were saying that there has been jack shit out in the last few years that was remotely scary....
Also what do you class as horror? Films like Saw, hostel etc are classed as 'Gorno' (the passion for gore for no apparent reason but to please, The equivalent to porn basically)

The Omen films are pretty good - well 1 & 2 are anyway - and I'm talking about the original not the crap re-make....

Other horror films from back in the day - Prison, Salems Lot (that REALLY shit me up as kid), Amityville Horror films - once again the originals not the remakes...

The best site to use for Horror is : http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com

They have a ton of horrors listed, and by horror genre too. I have seen some really good ones on that site, like the original 'Eye' made by the Pang brothers. I recommend seeing that - the original. Awesome visuals and sounds and very spooky.

Hellraisers are classics too if you wanna see some gruesome effects. The Evil Dead original is good too. If it's something you wanna freek your lady friend out with - I would get the Entity.

Jogs D
15-10-2008, 12:13 PM
Bloody hell - I remember the Entity - apparantly based on a true story as well...
Wasn't The Exorcist based on a true story too? Another horror film which is supposed to be good - Exorcism of Emily Rose - is supposed to be based on a true story.
I suppose it kind of makes the films more scarier if they're based on true stories...

If you wanted a romantic night in with your lady The Entity is one film you wouldn't want to watch. Of course you could say to her 'this is what I'm gonna do to you if I die and you get together with someone else' and then stick The Entity on... :)

thought the ring was scary at the time, but i was only about 14-15.

apparently the grudge is scary, not seen it, just going on what ive been told.

as been said, not much scares regular horror watchers these days, its all been done, we've become dessensitised and know what to expect.

i find movies like "them - ils" (a french film - think theres a yank remake with a different name) more scary these days, about a couple terrorised in their home by an annonymous gang of home intruders, apparently based on a true story, that sort of thing makes you sit back and think 'fuck' mainly because you know its quite plausable, more scary than any zombie etc flick.

londonpride
23-10-2008, 07:25 AM
ive always been told horror books are twice as scary as their film counterparts, dont know how true that is as ive never read a horror story, but ive heard it from quite a few people - after all, the human mind is the scariest thing of all, and books make you use it more than any film can.

wached that a few months back and agree completely. when i watched it i rated it highly just for the reaction of the characters to a crisis - which i could see happening, especially if some looney religious nut is there in real life:mad:

yeh, decent film, i quite like films like that, just a shame about the ending, not to my taste. i did wonder why they had to end it like that, but apparently it was originally a steven king (i think) book/story, so no surprises its a bit depressing.

Let's just say it isn't the traditional Hollywood-style happy ending! I personally loved the ending as it was nice to see a mainstream film doing something different (even if it was depressing).

I watched "Seed" the other day. The plot is quite simple and not overly interesting (serial killer goes on rampage, gets caught, escapes, goes after the people who caught him) but there was some pretty disturbing scenes in it. The hammer scene in particular is pretty gruesome.

The director was basically pissed off with films like Hostel and Wolf Creek claiming to be really gory when they are fairly tame, so he tried to do it properly himself. As I said, the film is not going to win any awards for acting/script etc, but it is worth a look if you are bored.

I have to admit that I find these sweeping generalisations about Japanese/Korean/Thai horrors all being good to be a little short sighted. I have watched quite a few and there are just as many awful ones as there are good ones. The market in these areas simply became too saturated after the success of The Ring, The Grudge etc and so much shit was made. Not trying to start an argument here. Just trying to point out that so many people seem to think Asian horror = instantly good.

If anyone wants to see a good site with a big list of Asian horrors/Asia extreme films reviewed then the following is a good one:

http://www.snowbloodapple.com/index2.htm

Some of the reviewers are a little too generous, but the list of movies is a good place to start for someone wanting to see more than the usual films.

The ending from The Mist is not the original ending from Stephen Kings book. The director actually asked Stephen King if he could change it, King said he liked that ending more than his own, not sure how the book ends though might be worth a read.

And on a personal note i thought the ending was brilliant, one of the best film endings i have seen actually.

If you are a horror geek then you should (and I may be wrongly assuming you have not) check out some Euro horror. There is some half decent/bizarre stuff being produced at the moment that does not receive much media attention and is missed out by people put off by subtitles. Examples include:

A L'Interieur
The Ordeal
Ils
Satan
Tzameti
Man Bites Dog
The Abandoned
The Orphanage

I think I am taking horror geekiness to a whole new level.

Versus is awesome and the same director followed it with Azumi. If you enjoyed Versus and have not seen Azumi 1 and 2, then I would recommend them.

Unfortunately the same director then went on to make Sky High, which for some reason was widely praised, but was pretty awful in my opinion.

They don't look the same.....

Pretty sure it's a remake but not of the 'house' your talking about.

The one you are taking about was awesome, think there was 3 of them. One of them was where he buried his wife in the garden and one where his old zombified army friend came back to haunt him.

I could be wrong like but I read somewhere it was a remake of an older film called house ( earlier than the ones mentioned ).

I believe the guy that came up with the story was one of the kids that found the house and the woman....

I love the line, "why are you doing this to us....?!" "Because you where in" makes the pointless killings even better... in my opinion.

House of a thousand corpses has a certain quality, bit more hardcore is the last horror movie or wolf creek.

I thought the follow up, the Devil's rejects, was much better. Probably because it was more based in reality, I really liked house of 1000 corpses up until the people living underground bit.

Haha is Cube the one with the autistic guy who cant stay quiet, "boop" in sum high pitch voice and sets off all the traps in the room xD

Avoid shit movies like Wrong Turn or Monster Truck

Worth a notable mention Jeepers Creepers I and II, II is not scary but has a lot of good humour.

I'm a big fan of 80's horror. It's probably all I watched as a kid.................they said it would fuck me up in the head so I called forth the demons from hell who took care of them for me...................I then skull fucked their dead bodies

A few good films of the top of my head:

Silver Bullet
Scanners
Nightmare on Elm St.
American Werewolf in London
The Gate
Demons
The Blob
The Thing
Children of the Corn
The Howling
Childs Play
Creepshows
Waxworks
Tales from the Crypt
The Fog
Day of the Dead
House
Carrie
The Entity
The Fly
Friday the 13th
Halloween
Fright Night
Scanners
Killer Clowns From Outer Space
Puppet Master
Demonic Toys
Dolls
Near Dark
The Lost Boys
Maximum Overdrive
Night of the Creeps
Amityville Horror
Poltergeist

Near Dark is a very good vampire film. I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned it until now.

Another 1 to maybe add to your 80s horror list is 'The Keep'. A Michael Mann film; apparently he got fired though by paramount and the originally intended 3 hour film was cut in half. Not sure if there is a directors cut available yet? Apparently there was talks going on about releasing such a copy which would be interesting.

I think I've seen it. Was it set in some type of German war bunker?

If so I vaguely remember it and yes it was a very good film. Hope they do release the directors cut, will be keeping an eye out for it (no pun intended LOL)

Yep, that's the film. Its a been while since i've seen it but i'll be scouting for a director's definitely; if such an edition ever comes out of course.

Another 1 of the top of my head but from the 90s instead... Event Horizon. mostly good but wasn't too keen on 1 or 2 aspects towards the end.

I saw '1408' a few months ago. For me it started off very promising but i became really disappointed when it degenerated into an over the top extravaganza (take note of the ocean scene and the painting). Some people on here though may really enjoy it as it seems to have received mainly favourable reviews.

I enjoyed Event Horizon defo worth a watch.

A couple very obviously missed off my original list was Alien and Aliens....never get tired of 'em

Foreign language horror I'd recommend The Orphanage (spanish language one) and Haute Tension (a french one) that I think was later made into an American film called Switchblade Romance. I can't vouch for the remake though as I've not seen it.....................the original film was good and has a saucy scene of one of the girls fingering herself on the bed LOL

I haven't seen 1408, I don't keep up all that much with new horror now as I always find it a let down. Although apparently the french are doing some good ones at the minute.

Event Horizon - a great modern horror/sci-fi !

1408 - in my opinion was absolute crap. And who the hell casts John Cussack in a horror film damnit !?

Maniac cop
basket case

night of the comet
twilight zone the movie ( that thing on the wing of the plane scared the shit out of me as did the passenger who says ' ya wanna see somehing really scary ' ? ). Ahhh they just dont make 'em like they used to.

Maniac Cop I had forgotten about that one, great film! I'm not sure I've seen Video Dead and Night of the Comet, I'll have to try and find them somewhere.

Basket Case and Twilight Zone the Movie were both good as well.

Along the lines of Twilight Zone The Movie was The Langoliers (well there were planes involved anyway) which I always thought was pretty good.

Horror will never again be as good as it was in the 80's :(
