Hi People

I am doing a fair bit of MMA training mainly just for fun at the mo and I want to get a good pair of mma gloves but I am not sure which are the best to get.

Any advice would be good, I don't want to pay the earth for them either.

Yeah, I use the fairtex ones too, my instructor reccomended them. Depends what ur preferance is really, the fairtex ones are quite stiff but have realy good protection and the wrist support is good. But some people prefer the slightly softer ones. My advice would be to try a few different kinds on and see which feels best.

Shouldn't your coach be advising which gloves to buy and are suitable for sparring at the club you train at?

There are many good brands (and indeed many crap ones) try going to a shop that sells them and try them on, find your size and just wear one for a few minutes, make a fist, move your hand and fingers and make sure it's a good fit. Don't try hitting yourself to check the padding though!

Also, a tip; DON'T buy any made by Everlast!, I bought a pair whilst in New York and used them training at Renzo's one night. The finger loops were all too big for the glove size except for the index finger loop which was so tight I had to take the glove off as it cut my circulation off!. Plus the padding was shite and hurt my knuckles like fuck.

Any of the major brands should be OK. If you by cheapo ones they are likely to fall apart. Quality ones cost more but last longer;

Sandee, Fairtex, Caged Steel, Twins, Windy

The irony of that statement and then asking on here for advice

He doesn't sound that interested in your wellfair if he doesn't care what gloves you wear. Plus some clubs use fight gloves to spar in and some gloves use sparring gloves, so if you don't ask him, how would you know which to buy. sparring or fighting?

i know you're all going to laugh but for a cheap and cheerful pair that arent bad at all for the money, you can get the Olympus Sport grappling glove from JJB Sports.

Stitching and fit is alright although the glove is a bit hard so your training partners may not thank you. JJB might be out of business by the time you read this though.

In terms of real value for money I'd go for Sandee or Caged Steel. Both are reasonably priced. I personally think the Sandee are better qualiy (but I distribute them so I would say that) but I have never had a pair of caged steel sent back. Fairtex are deffinately the best but £40+ worth ? I dont think they are that much better.

Sandee (http://www.fightshop.com/FAIRTEX---ULTIMATE-COMBAT-GLOVE-Product-580.html)

Caged Steel (http://www.fightshop.com/CAGED-STEEL---MMA-FIGHT-GLOVE-YELLOW-Product-1583.html)

Fairtex (http://www.fightshop.com/FAIRTEX---ULTIMATE-COMBAT-GLOVE-Product-580.html)

Word of advice, dont buy Fairtex off e-bay as there are ton of fakes knocking about.

I shall be having a big equipment sale in Jan so wait a few days.

Do MMA fighters wear anything underneath their gloves, such as bandages or handwraps etc?

They don't look like they give much hand protection. Do any of you guys ever do bagwork with them?

MMA fighters have the choice of wearing bandages or not under their gloves, it is optional. However, with no governing body there is zero control over what is used, just what the promotor tries to enforce. I believe in the NSAC rules it should be crepe bandage/gauze and surgical tape... nothing else. You are also not supposed to tape over the knuckles. In the UK I have seen some very high profile fighters basically cheat, using either canvas wraps and/or taping over the knuckles. I have even seen a couple of top fighters who have 'built' the knuckles in a similar style to boxing or Muay Thai.

Not going to name anyone, but they know who they are as you don't 'accidently wrap your hands and build the knuckles 'thai style'!

As for bag work. ALWAYS wrap your hands! The bandage isn't for impact protection, it is to keep the small bones in the hand and the joints in place, so you don't risk damaging either. if you want something to protect the knuckles then you can build the bandage up on the knuckles for bag work or alterntively you can buy knuckle protectors to go under gloves. A recent alterntive have been 'wrap gloves' which are far easier to use than bandages, but do remove the ability to alter how the wrapping goes so as to add protection to a particular part of the hand/wrist

A little confusing. Do you charge fighters to wear your gloves, I am assuming not?

Also, what would be the point of buying the Pro Kuntie gloves unless they were to fight on your show? I don't believe other shows are using your gloves are they?

Cheers for the info Red. I've never heard of knuckle protectors before.

I'm an ex boxer so I know the dangers of doing bagwork without proper hand protection. I know some boxers who choose to wear the same style hand wraps and boxing gloves whilst working the bag as they would in the ring. Personally I've never seen the point in this, as I've always preferred to use hand wraps and bag mitts, but horses for courses I suppose.

I doubt most MMA fighters would use MMA gloves for bagwork, they just don't seem suitable even if the hands are wrapped.
