Hi all,

I know there's a lot of threads out there about 'what gloves should i buy', but what I'm looking for is a little more specific.

I'm looking for a pair of boxing / thai gloves (dont mind which) for sparring (about 14oz). The problem is my hand is a bit knackered and I really need something with a lot of padding inside the palm (not outside). So something that fits pretty snug, but most importantly fills out the inside of my hand.

I've got a pair of Fairtex at the minute, and whilst they're a great pair of gloves they're too big for me really, my hand doesnt feel 'packed in', and I subsequently hurt my hand every sparring session. As a result I've just noticed I'm throwing my right hand in a weird way to compensate!

Any suggestions / advice?

Matt

Stop being lazy and wrap your hands ;)

It'll make you feel alot more confident throwing shots.

I know Mayweather said he likes to use Grant boxing gloves as he feels they give him more protection/padding for his hands.

But wraping your hands should help alot

I agree, you gotta wrap your hands mate (although it doesn't say anywhere in your post that you DON'T wrap your hands...but just incase).

Your hands really aren't designed for hitting people, so no matter what you do; there's gonna be a danger of damage, but your best way of limiting this potential for damage is by securely wrapping your hands.

Ideally get standard handwraps and not the "mexican" style (stretchy ones) as, even though the mexican ones hold better, they don't provide the standard of support that your standard ones do.

You can pick a pair of Lonsdale wraps up that are about 3.5m long from Sports Direct for £3, can't lose!

There are plenty of videos on youtube to help with how to wrap.

Sorry, should have mentioned that I do wrap my hands which really helps. Without going into too much detail I have a muscle wastage problem on my hand, and as such I've not really got all the supporting tissue that people normally have.

When I clench my first it feels like doesn't completely close - almost like I need to hold a something in my hand. When I wrap my hands I try to build as much protection around my hands as possible. The only other thing I thought of was layering the wraps in the palm of my hand?

Thanks for the advice

Ah, sorry to hear that dude.
There is a technique I use for providing additional padding to my knuckles, as I have problems with hurting them a lot, maybe you can apply it to the underside of your hand too.

Basically, when you come to wrap your knuckles, turn your hand palm-up and lay a couple of layers of wrap, in an "accordion" type style across your upper palm, before securing it by wrapping round the whole hand and continuing to wrap as per usual.

(by "accordion" I mean lay a strip of wrap across your hand until you reach the side of your hand, then simply lay a new layer directly over the top, without going all the way round your hand.)

Have you tried holding something then?

Like a iron bar ;) lol

Seriously, Like a rolled up bandage????

Or taping over the knuckles quite alot so its hard to extend your fingers??

These are just on the fly ideas, No idea if there any good for you or if they'll work lol

I don’t think that there are such gloves to be honest. Depends how bad your hands are. All I can suggest is the same as other people and wrap your hands more with additional padding on the palm.

Perhaps you could use those gel wrap things and turn them around so the gel padding is on the palm rather than the knuckle.

If its really bad what about coach spar mitts, which are padded on the palm ?

I've just done a review on some gloves for MMA Unlimited but i always stick to Cleto Reyes, tight snug fit with good hand and wrist protection. Worth every penny.

I made the same comment about the 'mid price' gloves; Fairtex etc having a lot of room in the hand area.

Cheers guys,

I'll give the accordion thing a go tonight. I've also had the bandage thing suggested before but forgot and never tried it so I'll give that a go too.

I need some new gloves anyway and I've read good things about Cleyto Reyes - although pricey. This is the problem with buying stuff on the internet!!

Cheers once again guys

Wrap hands - and I disagree with DanCrase, use Mexican style as you can wrap them tighter without cutting off circulation. Standard wraps do not conform to had shape as well. Personally I recommen buying some proper bandage and wrapping your hands with that. I've not used the Lonsdale things, but they look good.... I would consider using them with bandage.

Quality gloves - If you are serious and worried, then buy GOOD gloves... not Twins, Windy, Fairtex, etc. They are essentially Good budget gloves. If you want good gloves, then I suggest Reyes (the best) or Grant. But you are looking at £100+ pair. Plus don't order on the internet. Go to a boxing shop and try on several pairs, take your wraps, etc and find the pair that fit you best.
