View Full Version : Where to learn MMA in London?

Malcontent
30-11-2008, 09:28 PM
I have a lot of boxing experience, a little bit of grappling experience, but fuck all BJJ or Muay Thai experience.

I'll never be a black belt in BJJ, I'm also pretty sure that I'll never be a spectacular Muay Thai practitioner, but I want to become good enough at MMA to be able to compete in a show at some point in the nearish future.

Where in London would best be able to help me achieve this?

Cheers;)

Cheers, yeah I've heard a lot of good things about Shootfighters.

Does anyone here train there?

I've heard the training sessions can get very busy, and sometimes it can get a little crowded.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Why dont you specify where you live, London is somewhat large. There are quite a few gyms. But as Naz said you can do a search on the top right "Search" button. Type in here Gyms in London or what ever and various similar threads will pop up.

I live in wandsworth, so London SF isn't really too far for me. Looks like it's them then.

Thanks for all the feedback guys and girls.:D

is London shoot a Gym that anyone can go to ? I thought they specialised in those that had a grounding in most areas rather than taking on beginers

if you are east London you might want to look at Peacocks as they have Thai, Greco, Boxing..., a well established gym.

Why not check out New Wave Academy at Crystal Palace

That's only 4 stops from Wandsworth Common on the train (12mins) - its then a 10 min walk or 5 min bus ride to the Lewis Sports Centre.

Tuesdays 8.30pm-10.30pm & Saturdays 1.00pm-3.00pm

Yes, I'll check them out. Thanks

Nah, London shoot welcomes beginners; I started out as a beginner, and albeit I've trained super inconsistently due to personal problems, I advanced pretty well under their coaching.

the new Diesel Gym in Limehouse (near Bank Station) has started a new MMA team lead by Tommy "da Gun" Gerald. www.dieselgym.co.uk

Also from the 20th Jan'09 Thiago "Monstro" Borges, the Heavyweight BJJ Blackbelt will be also down there teaching. Along with the established London Sitnarong for Muay Thai - I think they will be definitely worth a visit.

Elite is in Elephant and Castle. Not too far from you.

Great guys and coached by Dave O'Donnel. So if you want to fight on UC it will help trainin here.

Another two good ideas there.

That diesel gym looks pretty good.

I'd completely forgotten about elite.

Much obliged.

Is Pancrase London still open? From their website they are looking for a new location.

Diesel gym is not up to much, went there for MT and the lesson was ok but the facilities you get for 15 pounds are a joke.

London shoot is the only gym with good facilities in London, most other places are crap when you compare them to normal gyms.

It would be great if we could get American style mma gyms!

Malcontent

That's a fair point, although the main priority for me is quality of instruction rather than quality of facilities.

Both would be good though:rolleyes:

Hi Fabrizio

I train at Diesel gym - agree still 'rustic' as the showers etc just put in and its just a room to change in - nothing fancy - and to be fair never will compete with normal gyms Fitness First et al

I would say however that the ring, matted areas etc are very good and you paid the one off drop in fee which is expensive (and on purpose)

the monthly 80 quid or weekly 25 quid allows you to now

train MMA x2 a week with Tommy Gerald (had Ryan Robinson/Tory Groman/Mark Smith all help too when Tommy was away)

now also train BJJ x2 a week with heavyweight Blackbelt Thiago 'Monstro' Borges

Muay Thai evernight mon-fri and sunday too

for a location that close to Canary Wharf its not bad value for 10 lessons a week if you did each one (none of them clash)

however

if I lived where Malcontent does (west london) then - totally unbiased - would go to London Shoot for MMA - a no brainer - or down to Carlsons - as on his doorstep.

diesel gym has got thiago 'monstro' borges teaching now eh?
that sounds goooooooooood!!
I've seen him fight before, the guys amazing,a huge guy but a very technical fighter.
might have to get my ass down diesel gym to check that out.
thanks for the heads up yak!

Much obliged Simon, but I've had to delay my entrance to the world off MMA/BJJ due to some health issues. Nothing major, although I won't be able to train until the end of febuary, at least that's what I've been told.

Really appreciate you taking the time to let me know though. See you in feb:D

correct, Leo will now be taking the BJJ instead of Monstro

...it will be Gi based on a Tuesday night (with MMA with Tommy/Tory on a Mon and Wed)

..you'll be glad to know there are no footwear requirements (so trainers welcome ;-)

..on a serious note thought - Leo is there purely for his BJJ skills ;-)

most of the old coaching staff (minus jess of course) are now based at the mma clinic http://www.themmaclinic.com

the clinic bucks the trend by having excellent facilities.

I've trained there and unless it's changed massively in the last few years it's not an MMA class by any stretch of the imagination. Nor do they seem to claim as much on their web site, in fact.

judging by your childish reaction mate I wouldnt want to

I did the usual 21st Century way of finding out a bit of info by tapping the club name into google

it then popped up with loads of info about Trad Japanese Jujitsu...and the only mentioning of BJJ was somewhere in the text about the lineage back to Japan

there is no details or info on who the BJJ instructor is?? if they have a bona fide one then they should make an effort and put it on the site

bar that it looks very Trad Martial Arts to me - which is great but its not what the OP asked for

thanks for replying with such a childish tone. And feel free to provide details of who the genuine BJJ teachers are.....

for example at my gym we have 3 bona fide Brazilian BJJ blackbelts nice and transparent

at Archway you have.............................
