I've been trying to get my diet top notch lately, and just got some final things I need to optimise...

First of all, I know you should have a protein shake or some protein rich food straight after your workout because your body is like a sponge in this period. But I was wondering, how long have you got to have a shake in order for it to be so effective? It's just after my workout at the gym it takes me 25 minutes to cycle home before I have my post-workout shake. Is 25 minutes too long?

Secondly, I have 2 protein shakes a day and also 330g of liquid egg whites. Usually I have the egg whites after waking up, and the protein shakes post-workout and before bed. I understand you get fast and slow digesting proteins. Which order would you recommend having the shakes for them to be most effective? IE whey protein in the morning, egg whites post-workout and protein shake before bed. Or what about egg whites before bed?

I Really want to get my diet perfect, so can these things make a difference or am I just being over the top?

take a shaker bottle to the gym with you and fill it with water after your workout?

Yeah it is an option, but my whey protein tastes nasty with water. Would much rather have it with milk, but ultimately I was wondering if it was worth the wait!

Whey in the morning, egg whites in the day casein before bed.

If you really cant stand whey in water, have it with skimmed milk before the gym.

I wouldn't bother with egg whites at all, you're throwing away the best bit of the egg.

Yolks are nasty though.

What are the benefits that make up for the shit taste? Are they not bad if you have high cholesterol?

Surely they are still a decent enough source of protein and worthwhile though?

Just eat more, it's what I do!!

Whey makes me puke (Iso and Con), so pretty much stuck on how I get my protein!

Maybe spend a few extra quid on some nicer protein? Dymatize Elite Whey comes in some pretty funky flavours, I've had the mint choc and the mixed berry ones and they were both really good.

Yeah I could do, but really I was just wondering what the time span is from working out to when your body returns to normal. I wanted to know if having a protein shake is just as effective 20 minutes after a workout then immediately.

I get 15kg of egg whites for £40, which pretty much works out 8p an egg white - cheaper than any eggs in Tesco. Plus the yolk contains approximately 60 calories, three times the caloric content of the egg white, along with the fats.

Is there any particular reason that you would have egg whites in the day and whey in the morning rather than the other way round?

I would add 1 fresh whole egg to the liquid whites. Egg yolk although cal rich, as Alex said, has plenty o' goodies in it, even the cholesterol will be good for you unless you have a pre existing cholesterol problem. IIRC the yolk also has a cholesterol lowering agent in it, I forget the name though.

All depends on what your goals are really.

Like Sports-Select said, have a shake before going training, which is actually better than having it after training. Then just eat when you get home. 25 minutes will not make any difference.

Hi, its lecithin that acts on the cholesterol in eggs.

The cholesterol scare goes back to the late 70's early 80's and has persisted despite science moving forward...

Eggs are as close to a complete food you can get, I don't worry about eating the yolks, I eat at least three whole large eggs every day for this reason...

I would question the quality of the egg whites you are taking, just wondering how much processing and additives have taken place...whether you are getting the optimum nutritional benefit...

I agree with Smiler. Only reasons to take yolks out are 1) If you're really cutting back energy intake or 2) If you really don't like the taste.

I've never heard that it's better to have a shake before training? This is my current supplement plan:

Pre-Workout
5g L Glutamine
25g MP Pulse

Post-Workout
5g Creapure

Would you still recomenned having whey protein before?

I fully reccommend it to anyone!

Rather than that, or doing the swirl the pan and one egg at a time, to poach several eggs at once put some cling film over a cup, form a dip, crack egg into it, collect the egg into the cling film, twist the top, then you can poach several eggs at once in once pan of water...

Interestingly from Men's Health this month:

"Yolks - these are nutrient-dense and antioxidant rich. Plus they balance the protein in egg whites and help your body absorb it."

"Yolks are a nutrient-dense, antioxidant rich, vitamin and mineral-loaded portion of the egg...the protein in egg whites isn't as powerful without the yolks to balance out the amino acid profile and make the protein easier for your body to absorb...plus, free range egg yolks are loaded with muscle nourishing omega-3 fatty acids"

When im poaching eggs in the morning, normally rushed for time, i boil a pan of water, put a capful of vinegar or lemon juice into the water and crack the eggs into the pan. The vinegar stops the eggs 'spreading out' so much and you dont taste it. I have it with few slices of salmon - an hour later i feel well on form. I always get free range eggs organic eggs (less cholesterol and saturated fat apparently).
I used to put raw eggs into the blender, with strawberries, coconut milk, dessicated coconut and brazil nuts. Sounds fatty - but all good fats and as i was trying to put on weight with the training i was doing it worked for me.

I take a Myoplex shake within 25 minutes after training.

I go through periods of eating eggs; I love the taste of them, but I just always forget to buy them when I run out.

As for protein with water; mine tastes like shit with water, but I throw half a scoop of nesquick in with it; it makes it taste better and gives me some much needed simple carbs direct after workout

Egg yolks are delicious. If I could I would make a big vagina from egg yolk and have sex with it.

Really does that mean you're workout finishes when you get home because cycling would be just like doing a little cardio at the gym??
