View Full Version : Huge lump on foot from kicking!
Been doing some heavy bag work this morning, mainly kicks, trying to condition my shins.
After I'd finished and went to put my trainers on I noticed a golf ball sized lump on the top of my foot. It was soft and not really painful.
Now, is this poor technique(yes, I am hitting with the lower part of my shin and letting my foot fly round the back of the bag), a crap unconditioned foot.... or simply that my kicks are so awsomely hard that my foot cant take it.....! (I wont hold my breath for the last one!). Or of course something I havent thought of.
Its gone more from a golf ball to just a big swolen foot now.

Sounds like a Haematoma but it could be a ganglionic cyst or tumerous mass, don't worry about the word tumerous it's not as bad as it sounds. However, without seeing it and examining it I cannot give you a diagnosis. I would suggest that if it doesn't go away in a couple of days to see your GP as it may need to be excised.
Does it feel hot to touch? What colour is the swollen area?
The swelling has gone right down now, just looks a bit swollen. Its starting to bruise a bit. It feels hot as I'm sitting here, but not to touch. To be honest, now its just a bit swollen and bruised I'm not too worried about it, more bothered that it is going to be a recurring problem which will have an impact on my training.

Could be poor technique....
Could be the bag is too hard or wide for you....
I'd suggest mixing up your training so that you don't keep traumatising the same spot over & over. Don't spend a whole session just on kicking.

Sounds bad, I think it needs amputating

Your foot or the lump?
Your foot or the lump?
Sorry, was taking the piss in response to Red Mist's superb advice.
Not too worried about the foot now, was just worrying while I had a golfball sized lump on top of it. I'll rest it a couple of days and hopefully wont see it again.
Thanks for the advice Ringmedic and diane.

it's just technique, when i started muay thai my foot would sometimes slap the bag after my shin connected. as you get better it just stops happening. plus, you tend to lose the feeling in your feet eventually, especially through sparring - you get to the point where hitting a knee with your toes or an elbow with your foot goes largely unnoticed.
