Because whatever you think of the belt system, the belts are earned through hard work. They DO show what skill people are, but you have to be pathetic to think that can only be supported by ego. If you go to a club to train, the belts show you what to expect from someone.
I would advise Ricky to wear his proper BJJ belt if he comes training! :) We have previously let guys wear their judo belts but only because the alternative was no belt.

belts are there for a reason, wearing one as a joke is cool and funny but not to a class where you have legit people who have actually worked to obtain a belt that symbolises hard work and sacrifice not just nipping down to the nearest JJB for one

The ideal might be that the belt represents a level of skill, however, the truth isn't so. I know people with no belts, who would be competent enough to compete with blue, brown, even black belts... yet they would have to wear a white belt in a BJJ club.
Plus, what about the respect back to the person wearing the black belt (even if it is a different martial art). They have put in the same level of dedication and hard work and should recieve the same level of respect... one black belt to another!

Exactly. The belt comes from hardwork and sacrifice... regardless of what the art form is. if you go to a BJJ class, you are STILL a black belt in Trad JJ and should be given the respect of that grading and therefore be allowed to show your achievements by wearing your hard earned black belt.

Why would you be so egotistical to feel the need to tout your achievement in one discipline while training another. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. Why do you view wearing a White Belt as such a derogatory thing to do? BJJ is the ONLY grading system I respect, because it is the strictest of all (if you train under the right instructor) and teaches so many good life lessons, hard work, humility and patience.

Why do you view wearing a black belt as such a disrespectful thing. it's just a belt, that's all. All Black Belts in all arts are achieved by following a syllabus of lessons, through hard work, humility and patience... why is it acceptable for BJJ to not respect other martial arts gradings, but demand respect for it's own....
belt, schmelt.... only the skill counts.... nothing else!
I didn't say wearing one would be disrespectful, I said it would be egotistical. It's a need to show off an achievement that is essentially irrelevant.

How is it a need to show off? If I own a black belt, why can't I wear it? Why should I have to go out and buy a white belt under threat of being "unconcious in a pile of peepee" if I wear my black belt.
What has the belt got to do with it? If I was training BJJ, I'd wear the first belt I grabbed... be that Black, yellow, orange purple or whatever. it is irrelevant to the skill levels and to any respect I may or may not have to other BJJ practioners

What else is a belt, if not a communication of skill level? It's a need to show off because you're grading in one discipline is completely irrelevant while training in another. I could understand turning up to your first lesson and not having a belt handy, or borrowing one from a friend so you can roll. But purposely wearing a Blackbelt given to you by another instructor is just so ridiculous that I can't work out if you're trolling me or not!

Just finished watching the karate kid, and belts dont matter. In fact Mr Miyagi lied to the promoter and told him that Daniel was a black belt so that he could enter the all valley karate tournament. He then stole a belt from the promoters bag. Daniel later went on to win the tournament and the heart of his sweetheart Ali

I would look at their fight record and actual fight experience.... which a black belt doesn't actually represent (yes I undertsand that to get a belt in BJJ you have to 'roll' with people of that belt.... but that's like saying I am a world class Nak Muay, simply because I have spared with a few world champs and didn't get KO'd).
Fact is, the colour of someones belt is way down the list of considerations when it comes to their ability to fight. There are white belts out there who would hand a BJJer his ass on a silver platter in a fight.

Yes, because they haven't been awarded a rank by a bjj instructor. BJJ belts DO represent skill level (I imagine there are some dodgy ones, but not many), your example doesn't invalidate that statement. BJJ belts are earned in bjj classes, they represent skill level but are not solely based on skill.
Plus, what about the respect back to the person wearing the black belt (even if it is a different martial art). They have put in the same level of dedication and hard work and should recieve the same level of respect... one black belt to another!
They have put in dedication to another art, yes, so when they're doing that they should wear the belt they've earned. I would never expect to wear my bjj belt in any other art. I would even check it was ok to wear it at another bjj academy (if they said no, I wouldn't train there).

Which could be read as adding weight to the argument that the belt means nothing. There will be white belt BJJers who are awesome and cpaable of subbing of levels of fighters... just as there will be black belt BJJers, whose standard isn't at the level of their belt and they would get subbed by the afformentioned white belt.
And this applies to opther MA too, which would explain why "some judo guys are monsters on the ground".... cause it's the fighter, not the belt.
So far, nothing has successfully proven otherwise

You must have not read my post properly, a bjj belt is not SOLELY based on skill. A white belt tapping a black belt doesn't mean anything other than the white belt hasn't trained bjj long but has obviously done other grappling. Diego Sanchez wore a white belt when he first started training with the Ribeiro's... I think that was about a year ago, I last heard he is now a purple.

I'm not really laughing at the choice of tattoo... more a case of the independant views of BJJ from a guy with a Gracie tattoo... how unbiased is that likely to be!

But Diego being a white belt, purple belt or whatever, is not important... it is his skill level... hence him having a great MMA record. That's not because he is a purple belt.
I agree, you should base a BJJ fighter on their performance / knowledge of the ground game and how they would handle people recognised at a high level.
However I think that an individual wearing a blackbelt should know he earnt it and those not wearing it should read/learn and respect what they did to earn it. For example a blackbelt from Matt Friars or whatever it is (where it takes like 6 months to get one) once you read the paper is not really respectable. However a Gracie blackbelt who has trained for 8 years, 2 hours a day, 6 days a week, deserves a great deal of respect.
In summary I don't think it is so much the belt you have, I think it is the work you have put in to achieve that belt that deserves the respect. The coloured belt are just a way that a system shows recognition for a particular students hard work and achievements :)

This is not about rickys suit, wich is fucking funny..
Its about wearing a black belt wich you dont have to another sport..And anyone who thinks its a bjj thingy should walk with there muay thau shorts with there club name on it, to another high class team. Or playing at ajax with a psv tshirt.. Its just not done.
And if you disagree you are just simply wrong :)
If making up that your are a black belt is not wrong. Well than claming to be a boxing world champion in your own organisation isnt wrong either.
its a useless argument
Rickys gi = Cool
Wearing a black belt, brown belt, blue belt, purple, green belt to a club in a sport you dont have the belt, = Respectless.
done on here :)

Gota agree with Red_Mist on the tattoo. At least you can shave off the silly beard when you realise.

Oh man, the fact that some randon, faceless kid feels he can bitch at me from behind a keyboard really hurts... I've got another troll fan, yey. I'm obviously better looking than I thought to attract so much male attention.
Jiu-jitsu changed my life, it means a lot to me. Beards are for real men, like Will Riker.
lol at the people getting all serious in a thread that isn't supposed to be serious. It's obvious that trolling people on here is like shooting fish in a barrell.

Nothing on the internet is serious.
Except goatse. That is always serious.

I don't know why everyone's dissing on tattoos. I'm gonna get 'Ultimate' and 'Challenge UK' tattooed on each bicep, and have Will Coonie's myspace photo tattoed on my back.
Thing is, tattoos may look silly (especially when you get old) but, I think I remember Leigh saying, that when you get old you look silly regardless or something (which is fair enough).

I was a seventh degree balckbelt in Hamster Kung-fu before i retired. there was only one other blackbelt and that was Dave Turton. FACT!
I've seen judo black belts getting smashed by bjj white belts (legit bjj white belts, no other training).
Ive seen average freestyle wrestlers dominate blue / purple belts in grappling matches through out pointing them. big deal
If he posted a picture of himself in a man utd shirt, should we all stone him in the street
ofcourse we should, the dirty rag twat. after the stoning he should be pissed on and fed to pigs.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Don't see why it needed to be mentioned as I only posted in response to someone mentioning judo.

By the time your in your 70's I don't think you'll give 2 shits about whether or not you have tattoos. Plus its a generation thing, old people now generally don't have tattoos because they weren't popular when they were younger.
But it does crack me up when people get really bad tattoos, but whatever makes you happy.

In a bid to help the environment i re-used some Asda bags at Tesco the other day, the lady that served me was not impressed, next thing i knew she jumped guard on me and said she wouldn't release me from the triangle until i learnt some respect

You need to learn some respect.
I had a similar issue at the BMW garage. I drove in with a next to new Audi RS4, great car, low mileage, bought and paid for. I was essentially looking to test drive and maybe buy an M3, but the dealership said that if I wanted to become a BMW driver, I would have to sell my Audi and come to the dealership on the bus....I certainly couldn't own an Audi and a BMW! Arriving at their dealership in my Audi was a lack of respect and I would find myself unconcious in a pile of piss next time..... I learnt my lesson, let me tell you!

The other night, I went to the pub in a black leather belt and ended up unconscious in a pool of piss. Could this be BJJ related?

Anything that ends in you being "Unconcious in a pool of piss" is BJJ related.
Maybe, did you see a dude in some PJ's trying to pour some blue liquid in your drink?
lol... the guy probably wore a karate Kid gi with black belt to one of his classes.

Give yourself credit for more than the beard. You changed your life Rob jui-jitsu was merely the catalyst.
