View Full Version : Hookers - how good are they?

Hi,

I have a story followed by a question.

In 1988 I was living in SE London and working at the Docklands Arena (now closed, but still marked on the A-Z).
It was quite a fun job as a student, working on the door, taking tickets and having the odd scrap! I got to see Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Duran Duran, Harlem Globetrotters & WWF wrestling.

It was around the time when WWF was just starting to be shown on SKY (which was itself still quite new) and this was their first live show in the UK. Top of the bill was Hulk Hogan V. Randy "Macho Man" Savage. Needless to say, the whole thing was a load of over-the-top BS. I clearly remember standing by the ring apron (ie about 2 feet from the ropes) when one guy was "KOed" by being hit over the head with a megaphone - the blow actually missed and he just flopped down and lay there for a couple of minutes.

Nothing new or interesting there, I am guessing, but prior to the stars of WWF turning up, as a sort of warm-up act, British wrestlers (whom I had watched on Saturday mornings as a kid) did their thing. Now my dad, just like everyone else's had always told me how it was fixed, it wasn't real etc etc, but watching these guys, I was left in no doubt, that any one of them was more than capable of tearing me a new arsehole! I say this as a reasonable kickboxer, who was quite happy to have a fight. The way I saw it, they were really wrestling, just going about 70% and sometimes letting each other out of holds. It made a deep impression on me. Within a week I had returned to judo (which I had given up a few years earlier - for kickboxing) and shortly thereafter I had started doing some amateur wrestling.

I get to see people training in pro style wrestling very week (they teach it in the gym where I teach eskrima) and the holds are all real. It is just that they are showing all the time.

My question is: Has anyone had any experience of a hooker who could really fight? I mean - first hands, taken down to a Boston Crab until I screamed - kind of experience.

Pro Wrasslin is very diverse from what I see. WWE style pro wrestlers probably dont train in CACC, but I've talked with someone involved with Inoki's promotion, and all the guys know what submissions are about, and have a solid background in a legit grappling style.

Isn't Josh Barnett really into CACC?

I think Alex Gold used to train a bit of catch wrestling which I believe is similar to hooking.

Talking about it he once said:
"It's kinda what the old circus wrestlers used to train, they would turn up to a town put out an open challenge to any local hardmen for a prize fight, then destroy them. A very efficient and brutal style."

If you look back to japanese style of shoot wrestling from the late 80s to the mid 90s you will see some very good displays of submission wrestling and muay thai.

The rules they used were similar to todays mma, where you would not win by pin but by KO or submission.

Many of those guys became mma fighters or influential in todays japanese mma scene like Takada, Sakuraba, Funaki, Suzuki, Maeda (rings creator), Sayama (shooto creator) among many many others.

And pretty much all of these guys trained catch wrestling for their ground work and muay thai for their stand up.

The matches from UWFi, PFG, old Rings looked more like todays mma fights than the vale tudo matches they had back in the early 90s.

I remember watching Gary Albright on TV and being amazed at the suplexes, was that the same era ?

Yup, Albright was wrestling during that period, he was with UWFi (shown here in the UK as Bushido)

Ah, Gary Albright; died in the ring, doing what he loved.

Man had a wealth of health conditions he never knew about, sadly, died at 36

Bushido had some brutal stuff in it for "fake" wrestling.

The "bushido" series was so well done that they actually aired here in Brazil on a time slot destined to vale tudo events in a sports network here.

Not sure if they were aware that is was pro wrestling.

One interesting thing about those events is that they usually would agree on how the match would end and maybe one or two moves that would highlight the fight and the rest of the time they were pretty much sparring.

It was very interesting when someone would get an accidental KO, you could usually see in their faces that they were thinking "Oh Shit! That was not supose to happen" or "Oh Shit! Im gonna get in trouble for this..."

CACC + BJJ + Wrestling = Amazing grappler. If they are all done well obviously....

For example, a fighter with the top game of catch, the guard game of BJJ and the transitions and positional strength of freestyle is gonna be a mean mother fucker!

I thought WWE stuff was fake too but as I got into CACC I noticed alot of them had some kind of BG in CACC or similar style. Even some CACC hookers trained some of the WWF or AWA wrestlers. Impressed the hell outta me! Gave me a whole new respect for wrestling in general. Thats why I train more in CACC than BJJ now. BJJ is awesome but when I first got locked up in a CACC hold I knew it was for me! Stuff is nasty!
