Been reading alot of the Shogun blog recently (cheers for the heads up Nath - excellent read)

and there is a post mentioning gameplans with a flow chart which breaks shit down nicely.

So when you guys roll do you have a game plan or just play of the guys reactions?

Personally ill always aim to get top position then just so where the match / spar takes me. never hunting for one specific submission. But after reading the blog im not sure if that is a good thing or not and maybe i should start to incorporate gameplans into grappling?

I dont really have a a specfic gameplan. Because IMO a gameplan is set for a specfic opponent.

However, I've been taught to have "go to" moves. Basically a move in my head that i will go for first without any hesitation.

Then if that move fails i have a bunch of moves to go for after and i have these for all scenarios.

I.E. At start of match ill try hit a high fake to a double and if it doesnt work ill try switch to a single etc etc.

I feel it helps as you fully commit to the move because you have done it 1000's of times in the gym and been through all the worst situations if it fucks up.

But i also do alot of scrambles and light playful rolling. Me and Levo light roll for about 30 minutes just trying new stuff etc

If its a training roll. than its different. than a serious roll. Or for other people competion training.

I only trained with him for 5 mins. but jk realy changed the way approach top game. i was after like. How the hell can a light dude like that but that fucking heavy.
Than in the use i went to lessons of john (must be in the name) danaher.. realy build a good game plan for bottem.

Now that i train loads again with flexa.
I came to the conclusion.. Jits hurts.

Nath,

Thats only if im in guard :p im on about my whole grappling game.

I have techniques which im alot more comfortable than others which come second nature. Just like other opinions on this.

If you do have gameplans, what happens if it doesnt work, do you have plans 2 3 4 etc...

To me, a gameplan is built from the answers to questions like;

Am I going to look for a takedown or pull guard?
Closed or open guard?
From guard am I looking to attack a sweep or submission as no.1 priority?
On top am I looking for knee-on or straight to mount?
Etc...

Even then, all that stuff can change during a fight.

I think a lot of people drastically over-think gameplans and I really don't see the benefit of writing out flowcharts, except as a memory device for techniques you're learnt or as a book index system (like Eddie Bravo). Are you going to be thinking of a flowchart during a fight? I would guess not.

A gameplan is basically most important during the start of a fight, after that it is just instinct and how you've been training.

Just as others have said, I have two ways of rolling. One is trying to totally control and submit my opponent as easily as possible, the other is learning as I go.

How did you come up with this opponent specific game plan? Distraction at the start?

That is why it said,

"Been reading alot of the Shogun blog"

and not

"Been reading Shogun's Blog"
