Hi,

The most fat you can do under optimum conditions is 3.5lb/week. Anything more will be water or muscle mass.

Have a look at the article I did on cutting for MMA Unlimited mag a few months ago...

i.e You cant have a set plan. What works for a MW with high metabolism will not work for a LW with low metabolism. It can also be dependant on th amount of weight you have dieted before the last weeks 'cut'.

e.g i drop from 82 to 76 during the 6 weeks leading to a fight, i then 'cut' the last 5 and a half in water/ carb depletion the week before. I then fight just over 76k. A fighter in the higher catgories might cut or diet similar %'s of bodyweight but obviously this ill be more kg.

According to Martin Rooney (author of Training for Warriors), cutting anything over 20-25Ib (which I think is around 10-15KG) and things start to get quite dangerous...

The best way to find out is to do a test weight cut and see.

I would guess that most international level fighters in one of the middling weight categories cut somewhere between 10 and 20 lbs (and I mean cutting, not losing weight here - the cut is the weight that you can put back on between weigh in and fight time).

For most, 10 lbs is quite straightforward with a good plan, 20 lbs is pretty tough and you definitely need to know what you're doing - just getting in the sauna is a recipe for disaster. More than 20 lbs is achievable by some people, but needs careful monitoring by someone who knows what they're doing.

Always, always, ALWAYS do a practice run first.

Hi, Rosi has a good point - the cut is the final work to lose weight to be regained before fighting after weighing in...

And always do a test cut.

I did for reaching 84kg, then a fitness test under fight conditions to see how it affected me.

Next time there will be tweaks based on the experience of cutting, making it more effective and easier.

In two weeks I can now drop to 84kg from walking around at 89-91kg, comfortably as I know what to do and how I react.
