View Full Version : Do you pull guard?

I was rolling the other night with a guy who had being doing BJJ for 4 years. I pulled guard and he stopped straight away saying 'never ever pull guard, its a very bad plan'.
Now I always pull guard as im a nice mix of small and shit so I normally end up there anyway.
Does anyone else pull guard as part of a 'gameplan'?
Do people still look at the guard as a shit position to be in?
Thoughts please?
p.s. this from just a rolling prespective not mma.
Cheers
I sometimes do it if I can get a guillotine- from standing if I can get their neck I will pull guard and then straighten my legs to put the choke on more.
I am however a) a n00bie and b) shit, so I am probably doing it all wrong anyway. Normally I don't like being in guard though as I have short legs.

Hell yeah. I pull guard so fast it'd make your head spin. It's not a good idea MMA unless you're super better than them but in sport BJJ/No-gi it's a great plan.
If the guy you're fighting is a Judoka/Wrestler pull guard before you get thrown and lose 2 points. I you're a point up with a minute or so to go, pull guard and he wont have time to pass and score but he can take you down super fast.
So keep pulling guard and do it with pride!

I clicked yes always but it's not it's yes sometimes. Depends if pulling guard is the right thing to do at that time. Like saying do you always do a hip throw, do you always shoot in for a double or single leg, Do you always clinch. Pulling guard is just another technique IMO, good in some situations not good in others.

Ignore him. Perhaps he just means it's a very bad plan for him eg: he's got a crap guard. In MMA never pull guard, just rolling BJJ do whatever you want. I fyou want to work your guard then do it. Proabbly take a different approach for comps though.

To add to this never give up top position to go to guard, that's something I see alot of newish people do.

Mikey you fucking gaylord. Where is the ' I like boobies ' option ?
I never pull guard if we start from standing but I have no idea why, never think to do it.

I'm fat with thick legs and even I pull guard.
david5
30-01-2009, 03:44 PM
i do for a few reasons:
1) attempting to "wrestle" from your knees is fucking stupid and pointless, and it's easy to fuck an ankle if some fatty tries to bail you over.
2) cause i'm lazy and have a good guard
3) well someone's got to, cause if you're both intent on fighting for top you can be stuck doing no groundwork at all for a surprising amount of time

For BJJ I pull guard, why not? It doesn't lose you any points in competition.
Also, as above, wrestling from knees is pointless and stupid. All that does in training is waste time.

Just think its more of a learning curve if its your first time and you have only drilled arm bars and triangles a couple of times rather than being dumped into side control then someone slapping on a arm triangle.
Positional grappling with takedowns might be a bit better

yes pulling guard is part of the game,it can work into a grate game plan.
cant see the problem.

Eh ??? I don't get what you're saying.

30-01-2009, 07:25 PM
sorry wasnt really making sense.
what i meant was that its a bit daunting the first time you roll. You have never really tried any tecniques in a 'live' situation and dont know any sweeps or transitions.
so if you start standing up chances are you are going to get taken down with ease then submitted early and often. By starting on the knees it takes out one thing to worry about so you can focus on tecnique and not tensing up all the time.
make any more sense?
Jamie Taylor
30-01-2009, 07:29 PM
Not really, you're still gonna get put ino side control easily and choked.
The alternative doesn't have to be standing, it can be just starting in guard ( which we usually do ). If you start on your knees and get powered over you might pop your knee, ankle etc...
It's just shit full stop mate.
MikeyL

thats a good point, I always pull rather than push though.
alternating starting in guard is good though

Exactly thats why its pointless cause someone is always just gonna pull guard.

fighting from the knees is not pointless and shit.
you can work on gripping and balance breaking.

Gripping and balance in a position you will never encounter in competition, is that much use? (well, in a few novice comps but nothing else)
I would rather sit down and work my grip from a position which will happen often in a comp.

being in on the legs. etc all happens in competition.

I understand anything can happen, but it's such a rare occurance, why spend so much time on it in training? It's more likely one person will be on knees and the other standing anyway (from a failed takedown).

who says im spending so much time on it...? i say it has its place.
i believe half guard has its place as well, doesnt mean i spend a super mount of time there

I'm still talking generally mate, not about you specifically. I know you train well, you're a purple belt!
I just think most people start wrestling on the knees at the start of every roll and spend way too much time clinched doing nothing.

i agree with the last part for sure.
my lines most of the times during teaching bjj.. when people staring or stiff armed in the knees. CONTACT GUYS.. MAKE CONTACT. ITS A CONTACT SPORT.

Ive voted - but am bitterly disappointed that thee was no "I like Boobies" choice.
People come on here with their interesting questions about bjj and grappling and forget the fundamentals! I LIKE BOOBIES! it must be in every poll!
Notwithstanding - personally I see lower grade BJJers jumping guard and I know its because their judo/takedowns are shit.
Learn some take downs - it will improve your game.

It can do, if I intitiate a takedown as you begin to jump guard and I set my arms up correctly and put your back and one of your knees on the mat. Ill score the takedown.

Yeah, but then I wouldn't count that as pulling guard. A successful jump to guard doesn't give any points away but it's not always an easy thing to do against a good opponent.

I understand - I just wanted to make sure that everyone was clear that jumping guard doesnt always lead to a 0-0 score. As you said - if the tech doesnt work properly someone could end up 2 points down

True, takedowns will only make you a better fighter. Plus, I'm sure even the best guard players would rather start a ground fight in top of side control.

I usually start on my butt and use butterfly instead of starting on knees now. It helps as my butterfly is weak so makes me work it more. Haven't pulled guard in comp but I've only had 3 matches and got taken down in 2 of those, LOL!

Its fine if all you're interested in is stalling or know the guy is sloppy with his arms, in real life it will get you killed though.

i'll pull guard if its just a light roll to improve sweeps and submissions. i would only pull guard in a fight if i knew i was about to be taken down and lose position.

Innit. Against a guy with no training, how long is it realistically gonna take you to sub or sweep someone? Seconds? Only issue is the possibility of taking a shot and getting KO'd, but anyone experienced (especially nogi) is going to get arm control straight away.
I would pull guard in a real fight (if it was 1-on-1 and I had to fight). Any other "real" situation and I'm running.

I've never been told not to EVER pull guard. If possible I'd rather be in a different position since I suck on bottom but if it's between getting caught in something or guard then I'd rather be in guard. I have managed to lock up Kimuras from the guard so its not all bad...

I have been training bjj for 4 years and i pull guard 90% of the time when i roll. The guy who gave you the advice needs to learn that people play different games. As long as you feel comfortable with sweeps/subs from your back then you will be fine. What you willfind is that you willhave someone who will not engage in the roll so sometimes you have to do it to initiate the roll. Top competitors pull guard all the time, marcelo, ryan hall, roger, eddie, maia, jacare etc etc etc

If the guy is bigger than you now way do you want to be in your guard!!!

My biggest regret in my MMA career is believing this and not pulling guard in one particular fight.
