Guys this isnt a troll or even a freestyle hatin' thread as i come from a freestyle / Judo background.

But more and more i watch MMA it seems freestyle wrestling isnt having as much success as it used it.

It seems alot more takedowns are coming from the clinch (Greco / Judo)

whats peoples opinions on freestyle for MMA?

i know some guys make it work who seem to be the exception but peoples takedown defence to the double / single are so strong that the success rate seems to be falling.

I think it depends on the people competing. But i do agree that straight doubles arnt as dominate as the past. Simply because peoples wrestling is getting better.

But the good wrestlers I.E sherk/GSP will put most people on the mat once they have a hold of their legs. But i agree most takedowns these days come from working up against the fence

Wouldn't say Freestyle isn't still dominante, it has all the clinch takedowns, it's just more known for the shots. I do think takedown defence from Freestyle has a bigger place in MMA than the shots right now though. Then again, that's only at the highest level like the UFC, people are still getting takedown with basic double and single leg shots all over the world.

Wrestling for MMA has changed a lot, it's kind of it's own style now. Mainly because most of the time trying to take someone down is against the cage, which is unique to the sport. The finishes there are still usually Feestyle though (high crotch lifts, single leg dumps, ripping out the legs on a double etc).

Have noticed aggressive high level shots (no knees on ground) being the most dominant shot now. GSP, Koscheck and Randy are awesome at them.

I like the high level double but can never really get it, which is surprising cause I used to do rugby.

McVeigh has brilliant wrestling technique for someone who is totally self taught. I actually find it quite embarrassing how he can take me down considering I am not a bad wrestler and I am much bigger than him.

I was coached by Dan Gable!.............Through tapes lol

Seriously, I learnt all my wrestling through Levo and Dan Gables tapes. Once i learn the move Ill drill it very light, Then against resistance, Then specfic situations, Then when things go wrong, Then i put it in my sparring against guys who have good takedown D of different kinds,

Like you can get in on Daleys legs but hes a nightmare to get to the mat, And even after a big struggle to get him on the mat he'll pop right back up. :(

Whilst Jim Wallhead has got one of the best sprawls ive felt, So i've learnt most of by sit outs etc from being under that fatty.

Plus Levo's brain is a wrestling book.

I got Dan Gable's Wrestling Essentials

http://www.amazon.com/Dan-Gables-Wrestling-Essentials-DVD/dp/B000HRLVCM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1233756928&sr=8-2

Coaching Wrestling Successfully

Then things like competitor supreme and season on the mat to give you that mental wrestling grit  lol

Wrestling essentials has loads of great warm up drills on it, The 2nd and 3rd dvd doesnt apply to grappling/MMA as much as its more turnovers etc, But as a whole its great

In my opinion people who wanna learn to wrestle for mma should just stick to striking with takedowns, cos i know some people with good wrestling but when you add strikes into the equation there defence goes out the window cos there not fully concentrating on just wrestling.

For me if im getting hit it makes me wrestle better.

Because i really dont wanna get hit once i get in i try extra hard to finish because i dont want to start again lol

Thank you. Like Paul said, self taught really. Never done a wrestling class and only ever been to one BJJ class. Done the odd seminar or session here and there with people I know but mostly it's vids, books and experimenting during the classes.

That is inspiring levo..well done especially when u look at the level of guys that u teach/have taught..

As regards freestyle for mma i have just finished...yesterday, infact..a hugely intensive dose of freestyle wrestling over a period of months...my coach was fantastic and every night he showed me adjustments to all techniques.

In one word i would describe freestyle as...awesome..

i think the relevancy of freestyle in mma is dependant upon the competitors style..does he incorporate alot of throws - arms or upper body? Does he use the bodylock alot? Does he simply attack the legs? does he attack the upper body just as a fake to get ur legs? It such a complex sport and one of if not thee most technical things that i have ever done..i f*cking love it..:D

Then the translation into mma is dependant on drilling, situational application with some resistance and then finally sparring...
