cruciate snap, the pop is the big give away , happened to me years ago, doctors fucked up saying i had dislocated it and it would be fine , 2 days later came down a ladder, twisted and mullered my leg completely fucked up everything , cartlidge . meniscus , and tore my quad , it was so bad that i was in hospital a day later for exploratory surgery and then a week later for a cruciate reconstruction which is a big fucking operation, that was about 8 years ago , it still gives me shit but its alot better, DO NOT TWIST ON THAT KNEE!!!

Hi!
Bugger! Feel for you...
Yeah, don't train on it at all...go and seek the advice of an appropriately experienced sports injury specialist or physio with similar experience.
Understand the full extent of the injury from them, what rehab/further investigation you need, what you can and can't do...
But don't risk getting it worse until you know...

i would be suprised if it wasnt your cruciate and im afraid to say its a super serious injury ( possibly the worst ) and you will need ( if it is your cruciate ) a big operation and years of rehab, sorry dude. As with footballers its as long out for a cruciate as it is a fib/tib badboy.

Hi,
The snapping noise is certainly a factor here.
I remember playing rubgy about 17 years ago when a friend and I distinctly heard his boot lace snap; only it hadn't. Turned out he had snapped an ankle ligament.
The knee has a number of ligaments that are commonly injured through sport.
The function of ligament is to join bones together and restrict the range of motion in a joint - eg allowing your knee to bend forward, but not back ward or to twist.
Most well known is the ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), which is damaged when the knee is twisted.
There are also the medial and lateral collateral ligaments , which join the femur to the tibia and femur respectively.
Damage to any of these can cause instability in the joint. If the ligament is fully ruptured, ie torn in two, reconstructive surgery may well be required.

Fortunately, it is usually quite easy to establish via a few assessments (ie the therapist pulls and pushes you leg and asks if things hurt and feels for strength level) what has been injured. 9/10 times MRI scans and arthoscopies (key hole camera) will simply comfirm this initial assessment, if it has been done correctly.
The key here is to see a specialist as soon as possible after the injury occurrs.
And remember not to rush back to training. Better to have a couple of months off now than to aggravate the injury and have it trouble you for years to come.
My guess (I speak as someone with a damaged ACL and a fractured spinous process) is that BJJ is pretty easy on the knees compared to judo. I had to stop judo and RL 16 years ago because of my knee injury, so I decided to do some eskrima "until my knee got better". 16 years later I am 3rd Dan and British Champion and I really feel that keeping my hand in and keeping fit meant that I was more easily capable of getting back into judo a couple of years later.
Take care.

Ive done exactly the same thing a few weeks ago, i got results from an MRI scan last week and ive torn my miniscus, my PCL and ive got a grade 2 rupture on somthing else but forgot the name (not ACL)! just waiting on a date for surgery then no wrestling/thai ort grappling for 3 months. Gutted for you if you've done the same, dont train on it until you know what you've done to it.

Very common injuries.
In 2006 I snapped my MCL, ruptured a muscle in the back of the knee (popleteus... something like that?) and got a buckethandle tear in the cartledge.
I went through NHS and it took nearly 9 months to go through the MRI scan and finally get the surgery done. it then took a couple of weks to get back to light training and 6 months to really get back to the flow.... however, the same knee is fucked again. Will lock out 6-7 times during any training session... it'll pop back in with a little pain.
I should go and get it checked, but at 39 (almost), I know if I have another year off, I will never get back.
Out of interest, the one lesson learned, never go NHS, always go private. Matt T had his back problem diagnoses and operated on in about 1 month!

must admit my experience with the nhs was both very bad and very good, firstly the misdiagnosis of my acl rupture , which led in turn me injusring my knee so badly that they had me in the operating theatre the same day ( fucking unheard of nowadays ) i had torn / mashed everything including my quad ( cried like a pussy for a while ) but after they did the keyhole surgery they said your knee is fucked well repair it this friday!!!, but the initial diagnosis by an indian doctor was fucking shocking , after that I learnt that you can find everything you need to know on the internet!!
But if you can go private go private!!!!

I'm never sure whether you're actually being serious or taking the piss... :)

actually im 100% serious on this one , after my op I looked on the net and found out that it was "allegedly" common knowledge that a loud pop meant something has snapped and not sprained as the doctor had said , I could have saved myself alot of grief by avoiding ladders if i had known that my knee was in a severley weakened state , but the doctor sent me home with my "sprained knee"

Just because many GPs are bad at musculoskeletal injuries doesn't mean that you can get everything you need from the internet. (And actually, a loud pop DOESN'T necessarily mean that something has snapped - although in your case it did).
According to the internet, I have sarcoidosis, hyperthyroidism, two or three prolapsed discs, kidney infection, pulmonary embolism, early onset osteoarthritis and a brain tumour :D

it wasnt a gp , it was the doctor at the A&E department, all im saying is I told him exactly what happened and if hed done his job properly he might have said "in some cases a loud pop indicates this or that" but he didnt wanna know.
and didnt you know getting punched in the head repeatedly probably does increase your chance of getting a brain tumour :)

It does indeed sound like he didn't do his job properly... I'm not disagreeing with you there :)

And there I was thinking I only had Alzheimers and Parkinsons to worry about :D

I have to say both myself and my Hubby have suffered similar grade knee injuries at training and we were both treated at the same hospital about 6 months apart. I did my MCL and the Dr was great, sympathetic, concerned, straight on the pain killers, crutches and an immedite referal to the fracture clinic the next week. Crutches for 4 weeks, proper fitted brace for 8 weeks. I also got a letter confirming I was on the NHS waiting list for physio but it would have been 8 weeks wait. As I have private health care I was lucky enough to get twice weekly physio.
Hubby did the LCL 6 months later and was told at same A&E it was pretty much his own fault for the sport he did, no crutches and they refused to give him a referral to see the same specialist I had been to see.
My point is it really depends on who you see on the day and its good you are looking to get a second opinion and not just accepting what was said in the A&E.
