The guy is a legend, he was at one time probabaly the most popular BJJ fighter in Brazil. He had a massive fan following in the home country. As far as i am aware,he is not even training anymore.

Had the privalige of watching his fights in the 2004 mundials. Never in my life have I seen an atmosphere and crowd as wild as that in a grappling or bjj tournament, and it was 99 percent from his fans.
They were all grouped up in one corner of the stadium, with huge drums, singing 'OOOOOO TERERE!!! OOOOOOH TEERERE' or something, his fight with Roger Gracie where he broke his arm, ran around the mat for 3 minutes because he was winning on points, madness. Never seen anything like it since.

Yeah he got addicted to crystal meth and his personality spiralled downwards very quickly.last time i heard tho he was on the mend and teaching in the favelas in rio for free (sum sort of community run bjj school for the people in the favelas)

He fought in a small comp in Brazil last year, but that's about it. I had heard that he'd become involved in one of those weird evangelical cult type churches, but this interview with Ricardo Vieira (www.tatame.com (http://www.tatame.com/2009/02/06/Fernando-Terere-away-from-BJJ-competitions)) suggests that perhaps he's got bigger problems...

Such a shame, his performances in 2004 when he entered super heavy just so he could fight Pe de Pano (who unfortunately didn't enter) were amazing. Check out his matches with Marcelo Garcia too, unbelievable.

Is a real shame. In 2003/2004 he was p4p the best gi fighter in the world.

Look at guys he helped develop as well - Sergio Moraes, Cobrinha, Andre Galvao...

He was in Natal for a while, dunno where hs is now but someone at the Euros who knows him says he is in a bad way currently.
