I've never competed in BJJ before and WAS going to do the U.M.A Back to Back Ne Waza competition that’s on in March, just to dip my toe in the water, but this competition (IN MAY) is BJJ rules and none of this “no standing / knee of the ground shit”
Just wanted to know if anyone has competed in this last year and if it would be a good starting base, just to see how I do, or if I get smashed like a fucker.
A friend of mine will be doing the same competition too at white belt level.
Another guy from our club is planning on doing the Gracie Invitational and I’m not sure if this will be too much for me or not.
SO has anyone had any experience with these competitions and what’s your opinions?
Also, has anyone an idea on the weight classes?

Cool. I'll check now for the weights. I'll be going Gi all the way ;)
EDIT:
Under 65kg
Under 70kg
Under 75kg
Under 80kg
Under 85kg
Under 90kg
Under 95kg
Over 95kg
They are for the Judo Ground Fighting. But they will probably use the same weights....
Looks like a 12 week diet is on the way ;)
Are these weights with the Gi on too?

I'd reccomend competing in the UMA mate, its a well run, friendly comp with a good turnout of some good teams and is really good to get some experience.

I suppose it doesn't matter what the rules are as long as everyone has a good time.
Was just a bit worried with the Gi comp in May, as i'm trying to develop my game at the moment with a lot of standing passes, where both knees are off the ground pinning the hips / legs.
May not be the norm, but there's a few different things we've been doing at the club.

UMA are running two in May, one grappling and one groundfighting (no standing, knees on the floor etc).
All details are on their website, www.umauk.co.uk (http://www.umauk.co.uk/). From the looks of it, comps are their bread and butter so I'm expecting it to be a good experience for my first comp.
I've been to a few UMA events, some have been run well some not so good, you'll hear alot of mixed responses about it, but its worth going to, its hard finding good grappling competitions I find, especially no-gi ones. I'm looking forward to the Next Gen one this weekend
