I teach Jeet Kune Do, Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Wrestling. I wouldn't say I was a strict MMA guy because I train and teach all of these arts seperately. I will NOT let you fight MMA until you have 5 years training in stand-up with me and you are at least a Purple belt in BJJ. Like it or not, that is just the way I do it. Not trying to mess you around with the promise that you will be a Master in 6 months! You can compete kickboxing, BJJ, sub-grappling, freestyle wrestling etc, no probs. If you want to take a look at what I do then pop in.
McGovern Academy, 51a Queen Street, Stoke-on-Trent. You could try out also, Impact Martial Arts Academy, High Street, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent
If you want an MMA Gym with a view to competing in pure MMA try out, Ross Pointon's place, Gladiator Gym, Longport, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. Ross has put on his first MMA show too, which was a success.
There is also a new MMA gym within Impact Boxing in Fenton. Boxing is run by British Champion (I think) Scott Lawton, don't know about the MMA side of it though nor who is running their grappling programme.
In Stafford you have Gee Oakes' Gym. Never trained there, but hear great things about him as a coach. Hear is Thai is solid and great wrestling.
For strict Muay Thai, you cant go wrong with John Steele's Gym in Tunstall. Awesome Thai boxer.
Hope that helps.
Simon McGovern.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I came on here to ask about MMA gyms in Staffordshire/South Derbyshire and this thread seemed to almost have it covered! I live out near Rugeley, but I am willing to travel for good training. I have a few questions for Simon McGovern, if I may, but I would be interested in anyone's thoughts.
First of all, do you just teach private lessons at the McGovern Academy? I saw the listing on the Impact Martial Arts, and I am not sure I could afford one to one tuition! I am really determined to be the best all round fighter I can be, and would like to compete in various disciplines and eventually MMA, but I am not that confident and I think a careful approach like you outline would suit me. I would be really interested in talking to you about it some more.
As for the other gym's mentioned, does anyone have any more information about any fighters they have trained and how good they are at teaching beginners like myself? And could anyone PM me some contact details? Is Gee Oakes' gym the one that trains at Elite 2000?
Cheers for your help.
5 Years standup???
Purple belt BJJ? lol! Okay.

If you live near Rugeley then Team Supreme in Cannock aren't far from you, they have Paul Taylor, Vaughan Harvey, Harvey Harra, Dan Korbely, Eugene Fadiora etc, It's a great place to train
Ross Pointon's gym in stoke is supposed to be pretty good and there's the grindhouse in Burton

I have found some information on Grindhouse and Team Supreme, and I have seen Ross Pointon's website but the contact address doesn't work. All look like great gyms, but can those that know them recommend which would be best for a beginner who is not all that confident (but determined!)?

i can only speak from experience on team supreme but when i started there i was a beginner and found everyone very helpful and there's no attitude. all the classes there have a mixture of people from pro fighters to absolute beginners. you should come down n have a go or just watch a class to see what it's like

Great, are the MMA classes open to beginners, or just grappling and MT sessions? Just trying to decide when to come down.

If a guy has NEVER trained before and he wanedt to fight why is that hilarious to say he should have a minium amount of training? If he had trained in kickboxing, thai, boxing, wrestling, bjj then he would be fine, he already has a strong base (just like Brock). But when you get out of shape 30 somethings walking in your gym every week saying they want to be a "cagefighter" then they have to start from scratch. And if you would just stick them in a fight after a couple of months then you are a prick and shouldn't be allowed anywhere close to a fighter. Simple. There are plenty of gyms out there for people to train at. And if you want to discuss why I teach that way then feel free to call me.
Simon.
You could try http://www.gorilla-gym.co.uk/ they are a smaller team not interested in making money!. The head coach Mark is well versed in Muay Thai and an Orange belt in Luta Livre, they are the only Gym in Stoke affiliated to team Kaobon Head grappling coach luta livre black belt Marcelo Brigadeiro ( SO THE GRAPPLING SPEAKS FOR ITSELF! ), They win the majority of there fights in most areas and you cant go far wrong! than training with them!!! ( sometimes biggers not always better ).
hope this helps
Rich
