View Full Version : Bang to the head and death
In light of what happened to actress natasha richardson and her losing her life after a bang to the head that didn't result in unconciousness does that show the real danger of MMA? Apparently she felt fine right after but then felt some side affects after an hour or so.
A doctor speaking on the subject said that even a mild bang to the head can cause the brain to start bleeding and if not caught within hours can result in death and even if caught most likely will result in death, scary! Any thoughts??

And I did.
Guy on news today said this sort of thing is possible with a fall from standing!

Would wait until confirmation of the cause of death, she could have had an unknown pre-existing condition that was triggered by the fall

Ban standing!

That's what i thought originally but the doctors are saying it can happen pre existing condition or not, they mention that your brain hitting the side of your head can cause damage resulting in bleeding.

lol, I'm sure there are better things to look at to judge the risk... boxing, maybe, just maybe?
My mate died from a blood clot due to taking one kick to the head during kickboxing sparring.
Shit happens, basically. Humans are pretty tough, we can take a pretty severe beating and recover with no long-lasting effects, but sometimes you get unluckly.

Ban brains!
They have the potential to leak blood and cause death!

No pre-existing condition that I heard of. He went home, said he had a bit of a headache, took some painkillers, went to bed, died in his sleep.

We all know the dangers and its a risk we willingly take. I remeber about 11 years ago a fella in Bolton town center died from takin a single punch, you cant talk about banning combat sports INCASE something like this happens other wise you may as well ban running incase you trip and fall, gymnastics, driving, fishing etc etc as everything we do in normal day to day activities has the chance of causing serious injury or possible death. So instead of focusing on 'what if' and carry on enjoying our lives, and this sport.
Ban Skiing!!
Lol :D I ski every year and if you look at the stats injuries are far less common than in football matches.Think it was 3 in 1000 skiers or something would have an injury .

What you'll probably find is that she had a pre-existing brain condition such as an aneurysm in her brain which was waiting to pop, and the slightest bang on her head was all it took for it to rupture.
For all professional boxers and UFC fighters an MR scan of the brain is required to exclude this before they can fight. But this doesn't mean that they can't sustain an intracranial bleed from a blow during a fight though.

heads and brains are funny things. They can take a surprising amount of battering and be undamaged and then you can have a small fall awkwardly and not wake up again. Sometime it is pre existing issues, sometimes not. Short of crawling on all 4's all the time I guess a head injury can happen to anyone at anytime.
