hand /wrist doctors

does any1 know of any good private hand / wrist speacialists I have suffered with wrist problems for a couple of years after training thai boxing I am currently going through the NHS system and I have an MRI scan on april 1st a nerve test has already been carried out and thats all clear, worrying thing is the docs dont seem to have a clue one was talking about fusing bones together which is not an option as it would ruin any idea of training for me, after the mri scan they are going to give me some options but I could do with a second opion before they start cutting me open

Wait untill you have an MRI scan that should show up the exact problem. I had a wrist injury about 12 Years ago it was a torn cartalidge they stitched it with keyhole surgery and put my arm in a cast for 6 weeks then 3 month rehab its been sound ever since. It was done by Mr Harvey (I think that his name) he is a Hand surgeon at The Nuffield Hospital Chester hope this helps

Andrew Fleming - http://www.andrewfleming.org.uk/index.html . He is one of the most respected plastic & hand surgeons in the country, I saw him for a break in my knuckles and he fixed them in a way no one else suggested - he even found another break that the NHS doctor missed. He will be expensive but if you are willing to cough up or have insurance he's worth every penny.

If it were me, I'd also try a physio / osteopath also for another opinion.

Orthopedic hand / wrist specialists are great if it turns out you need an operation. However, when your favourite tool is a hammer, everything tends to look like a nail.

There are often no clear and easy answers, and different specialists OFTEN disagree about where pain is coming from. MRIs are all very well, but they don't always show up clearly what is causing the pain - all they can pick up are structural abnormalities, which may or may not be the source of your problem.

A lot of wrist pain can come from problems higher up the arm, and even into the shoulder or neck.

If - as it sounds is the case for you - you'd very much prefer to avoid the operation, then get as many different opinions as possible, and try the ones that don't involve slicing you open first!

Never looked at it that way but thinking about it of course you are right!! Explains a lot of previous medical advice given to me.
