FLAMBOYANT Japanese welterweight Akihiro Gono has been axed by the UFC.

The former Pride superstar suffered his second consecutive Octagon defeat to Jon Fitch at UFC 94 in January, which pushed his overall record with the promotion to 1-2.

That came hot on the heels of his UFC 89 split decision loss to rising British prospect Dan Hardy last October.

But Gono – known for his glitzy ring entrances and exciting fighting style – will not be out of work for long.

According to the latest print edition of The Wrestling Observer, he is already in talks with Japan-based outfit Sengoku.

Seems harsh, I'd have kept him for the ring entrances / corner men in dresses tbh

Isn't this news a few days old? The Sun are usually pretty good at getting scoops

Thought Gono should of been kept on, he had a good win, got unlucky and got a top #3 WW. But Yet Pete Sell can go a 3 or 4 fight losing steak and get kept on????

There have been plenty of fighters who have had a win and then lost 2 on the bounce and been kept on!

Not right

It is disappointing, but he was under-whelming in all his performances, and he was no doubt quite a bit more expensive than Pete Sell, and in his UFC fights at least, less entertaining as well

I'd fee sorry how him, but... he knee'd Dan Hardy in the face twice on the ground.
