with the series only a few days away i thought we could keep most the discussion regarding the series in the one thread. stopping spoilers from being mentioned on other threads.
there's going to be alot of interest in this series on here so i thought it would make more sense keeping all the discussion in one place, as opposed to the countless mini threads we'd otherwise see.

any discussion/spoilers etc can be posted here after each episode. (obviously not stupid spoilers like who wins before the fight is broadcast or who wins the series/got eliminated early etc).

first episode which is the UK elimination fights will be on Virgin 1 at 11pm on 5th April, it is then repeated at 10pm on Setanta 1 the following wednesday. I think it will run in that structure for the entire season.

Thanks mate....although thats wank, why cant we have it on Setanta on the Thurs like previous as waiting till Sunday sucks!

If they wanna get people interested Setanta should do it freeview like the yanks do with Spike and prob get more subscribers... is there some sort of link between Virgin & Setanta?

According to the listings on the Setanta site, UFN18 is on Thursday 8-10pm but instead of TUF9 afterwards, they're showing "The Footy Show". Good stuff, not enough football on at the moment imo

that was the original plan, but recently setanta revealed a massive loss in there yearly profit, so i believe they have now split the deal with virgin as they dont want to lose the programming. By airing just the repeat they dont have to pay as much for it, but will still pull in viewers. Crap i know, this is why the delay has happend. Unfortunatly your sky planner is wrong buddy.

this thread seems to be working, we've only had 3 other TUF 9 threads started in the past 24 hours ;)

whats so difficult about the start times?

Each week the show will go out at Sunday 11pm on Virgin 1, but if you cannot stay up for that it will be repeated every Wednesday at 10pm on Setanta Sports.

Starting on April 5th, there will be 12 one-hour episodes in which fighters compete in a knock-out tournament – eventually leading to the TUF 9 finale which can be seen exclusively live on Setanta Sports.

from the setanta website:

thats not what the setanta website has said.
starts on setanta wednesday 8th.

seems every planner and the virgin website are feeding false information, the virgin tv listings doesnt even show them showing TUF.

10pm EST, what is that in GMT?

the ufc site says its 10pm EST and PT, given PT is 3 hours behind (i think) i guess that means the PT area don't get to see fight night live?

Ill be watching TUF on mmatko.com as soon as its upped, just as i did the entire last season, should be up by thursday afternoon. cannot wait.

yanks starting already:

These UK fights reminded me of a lot of the amateur fights I go to. So, either the UFC brought in some below par fighters or they were just matched up in a boring fashion.

I'm glad that the UK fighter Alex Reid isn't fighting. He would have really annoyed me. I don't think he has time to train anyway with all the eyebrow waxing, tanning and facial peels anyway.

Lots of those guys either need to hit the weight room and protein or lay off the fish n' chips and hit the treadmill.

shame to see che mills get beat, weren't he meant to be one of our best chances?
whats the bloke that beat him like? he trains in the usa, is that due to his fighting, or is he a genuine expat who fucked england off to live elsewhere?

ross looked class and did a few others.
the preview for next week looks funny, fucking yanks failing to make weight lol

is this anyone on here?.........

I watched the TUF trials and this guy will not go far. * He had very little experience and his skills were poor.* The D*"k that he fought was to busy polishing his* own ego during the fight that he was an easy apponent. * Give him his dues for getting through and i wish him* success but given the standard of the rest apart from* the lanky streak who was thrown in with a useless* Ginger, he will not get through.

What was Reid on* during this trial. That guy has not got a clue, the* fact is that he has the looks like a stuntmans elbow* and the MMA skills of Shopping mall toilet cleaner. * Have you seen the shorts this guy wears in Cage-rage,* waht a wannabe Ken Shamrock.

Deep inside i was a bit worried, due to my weight cut and cramping. No disrespect to Dean, the better man won on the day. I had that triangle tight aswell, legs just spasmed out of control, damm!

How gutting is it for you, knowing the "Real" Alex Reid didn't turn up in such a big fight. Do you see that fight as your last chance to break the big time, having gone 2-7-1 in your last 10 bouts, with 5 straight losses? Whilst there are guys in the WW (And MW) division with much better records also in competition for a shot at the big show.

Also do you regret the showmanship during your fight now as it looked as if you threw the fight away with your showboating tactics.

You'll notice that all the fights were heavily edited. Love to see my fight in full, i dont even throw a single strike in edited version. On the day of my fight 'Alex Reid' didnt turn up. Deep inside i was a bit worried, due to my weight cut and cramping. No disrespect to Dean, the better man won on the day. I had that triangle tight aswell, legs just spasmed out of control, damm!

Oh well, onwards and upwards, next time hey,and back to middleweight for me!

Hope you turn things round - I've genuinely enjoyed watching your fights over the years. Taking into account what you say about the fights being edited - it still looked to me like you were a bit too happy to stay on your back, something which I've thought before about some of your fights. As a guy famed for his striking, I've always thought that a bit strange??

Reidernater
05-04-2009, 01:18 PM
Strange indeed, because yes, I am striker! I dont see this as my last opportunity at the big time though, as when Im in the gym Im smashing up everyone, and since TUF, Ive redoubled my efforts to make sure this carries over to my fights. I can go on to say all the different factors, (stress on body and mind of weight cut, fight inactivity, due to surgery, injuries, overtraining, etc) but all fighters have to go through these same hardships. I take the mindset that I am still learning my trade, and having a strong spirit to succeed, it is only a matter of time before I get there, and I am already as Im learning!

With regards to show boating, I dont regret it, I was editted unfavourably, but it saved me when I was in no fit state to fight on the day, due to cramping and being dehydrated. I used my experiance to make up for a lack of gas in the tank. Its a damm shame Alex Reid didnt turn up though.

Hi Reidernater,

Had you not practised your weight cut and recovery? If you had an appropriate recovery plan then you shouldn't have been dehydrated. For example, we were doing practise cuts and recovery in the week between Christmas and new year to prepare.

If you had trouble making the weight with 2 weeks full notice then do you not think you really would have struggled in the house with only 24 hours if picked by the US team to fight?

All the best for your future fights.

Bear in mind he normally fights middleweight so to drop to welter and till fight as he fought is quite a feat. Shows a lot more balls compared to the clip I saw of the yanks anyway.

After getting down to a closer weight im sure Alex would have found it easier once in the house. I dont think any of the fighters had that much notice. Ive not seen the show yet but respect to you Alex for stepping up to represent your country whatever the result. Good luck with your future fights. Ive seen your previous ones and enjoyed some wars.

Did practise once, when I had the interveiw in Vegas, but I didnt pressure test my new weight. stupid, I know? I was actually putting weight on for the show until they told me they wern't doing middle weights. So I was cutting weight from 205lbs,93kg to 170lbs,77.5kg. I love a challenge, and had fun doing it, just left me too weak, and not used to my new light weight.

Lol at iranianwarmachine... No skills!!

Big well done to everyone that made the show especially Nick, Dre and Dean, just a pitty that John Blockhead or whatever his name is wasn't given the chance he deserved!

Well we'll see what he's got when he fights someone with a gas tank, any of the other winners on the british team would have buried him.

In respect to Reidy the cut really got to him. He was very strong in training running up to the fight, but changed his diet too close to the fight - he knows he made a mistake!

He's putting these mistakes right at the moment, and is training pretty damn hard too. He's back up to his usual size and all his strength and endurance is right back with him.

Mind you, Alex may have suffered badly, but looking at the clips of the yanks, hey, they really need to sort out their cutting! Collapsing all over the place! The dispair on Dana's face said it all...

The point was this.

Alex has been stuck by some bad luck (eye pokes, shin injury at CR) and he has mentioned before about judging decisions that didn't go his way. Also he wasnt allowed to enter TUF 8 (i think) by Pro Elite/Cage Rage.

And i guess TUF 9 was his big chance because it's surely unlikely he will get another shot cos of his bad run of form in his last 10 fights. Personally i would be totally gutted and i can't see how he can be so upbeat about it, as his next fight is at the Troxy and not Las Vegas.

But credit to him for having such an upbeat attitude

Maybe but it's also sadly a fact

I like Alex and i think he has been treated badly in the past by Dave Rage. But he has said before that some of the decision losses he had in the past were bad because he was more active in the fight and wasn't relying on lay and prey to win. I believe he lost the chance to be on TUF 8 (might of been 7) because of Dave Rage/Pro Elite.

And it is pretty clear to most people that Alex is gonna struggle to get another shot at the big show, as he has only won 2 of his last 10 bouts. And there are dozens of guys with better records then Reid has. Plus i don't think the showboating was a good idea and it has got a negative reaction from fans and other people in the sport.

If that was me and i blew my big shot because i "didn't turn up" it would eat me away every single day and would kill me inside. When you fought Sudo you went out there and gave it your all with no regrets.

Hopefully Alex can gets some wins and put himself back into contention, but i think it's unlikely and to say "the real Alex Reid didn't show up" must be a gutting experience.

Maybe i should of just said "well done Alex, 1 more win and you'll get there instead". As the UK MMA scene is a totally delusional place and everyone seems to think they are ready for the UFC anyway :/

Not at all. If he had won the fight, he would have gone in the house and had some fights and possibly on to compete in the UFC. If he suddenly goes on a tear and wins a load of fights outside the UFC, he could still earn a shot

If that was me and i blew my big shot because i "didn't turn up" it would eat me away every single day and would kill me inside.

What would you know about it? You've never got in there and never will. That may be harsh but sadly its the truth

Maybe i should of just said "well done Alex, 1 more win and you'll get there instead".

No, of course not. He fucked up but there are better ways to phrase things

How about this re-phrasing of your post:-

"Are you gutted that the "real Alex" didn't show up?

You've had some recent setbacks in your career - what are your plans for the furture? Your division is very competitive - do you see that as an issue?

It looked as if you threw the fight away with your showboating tactics. Is that a decision you regret?"

Covers the same questions you were asking but without ripping in to him with your rhetorical questions (if his record was so important, how did he get the shot in the first place?).

Anyway, I personally don't think his showmanship lost him the fight (although it was annoying/funny). I think it was down to the issue that has been posted before - he can't defend the takedown and seems unwilling to address the issue, despite having a fantastic camp to train with. I think 170 is a good move for him though and he should probably take a year off to focus on wrestling/judo and submission competitions

the 2 were training mates and the first round the lad in black shorts didnt seem to want to hurt his mate, instead he ate up punches. he came out in the 2nd and looked much better, maybe even more talented than miller judging by his punches/kicks/take down/attempted sub.

mark miller threw heavy hands and looked dangerous, didn't do anything else though, just threw bombs, no leg kicks/take downs etc. may be a bit one dimensional.

Congrats to Ross Pearson he looked pumped and ready to kill, will be good to watch him progress thro the show to the finals (hopefully) shame about Alex, the edit didnt do much for him but he made the tryouts and judging by his comments has learned from his mistakes, Im sure he will come out in his next two fights with a more focused determination.

I think they matched the two teams pretty evenly skill wise. The US team is a lot weaker then it could be. I don't think there are any high level wrestlers in the US team.

I initially thought the US team would sail through the brits but i think this season should be competitive, i would not be surprised it a British guy won it.

The fact is Alex loves fighting and has the dedication and balls to get in, and a positive outlook which will make him come back stronger next time, regardless of his record.

Love him or hate him Alex Reid is always good entertainment. Some of his earlier fights have showcased what he's capable of when he's "on". He's had a bad run of luck and maybe things both in and out of his control have worked against him, but fair play to him, pretty boy or not, he's a tough motherfucker with skills. Would've liked to have seen more of the fight cos apparently he was knocking out sub attempts for fun, despite gassing and being under par and dehydrated. He's had the brains and the guts to identify where he needs to be in future and I dont think its the last we'll see of him. The showboating got on my tits in this episode, but would've loved to have seen him wind up the yanks!!! Got to stand out from the crowd sometimes.

Well done to all the lads, everyone of you has earned it. Out of 8 fights I think 7 of them were superb! Dre, Ross, Stapes, Jeff, Dave and James looked quality!!!

The US team have got some serious fucking problems.

dont forget the yanks have just had a lightweight season, so some of the lads on this series may be those who couldn't make it onto season 8.

just watched the fight with santino where he was getig twatted in round 1 and then landed the killer knee at the start of the second round and finished him with the rnc.
i cant believe the fight went to the second round to be honest surely the ref should of stopped it, that santino fella took over 80 shots un answered yes EIGHTY SHOTS. Fair play to him for coming back but should he have been given the chance given his lack of activity?

Was saying the exact same thing to my mate, since when is just covering up and not even attempting to improve position a valid defence? Yamasaki should've stopped it.

yeah, there was no communication between the ref and the fighers e.g "defend your self or ill stop the fight" if Mark or Leon were in there the fight would of been stopped! i bet the guy who lost that fight is kicking himself for not "pulling the trigger"

Curling up into the foetal position and having a nap is perfectly valid

Poor editing to bring Rob Browning in and then show him in the highlights for next week being in the house. So now we have to put up with watching another idiot from that family on the show.

Right now the yanks have maybe two I'd say were serious contenders for the final, the rest looked like the UFC picked up a load of tramps in a supermarket car park. UK lads are going to steamroller their way through this.

I thought the yanks were shit - they weren't hungry and didn't give a fuck....

Our lads on the other hand were well up for it, hungry, very well prepared, all made weight and went out to fight balls out....

I think the yanks are underestimating our lads - I remember at the end Dana telling the yanks that the Brits are going to smash them if they don't take things seriously - they didn't seem to care - and that yank with the mohican just laughed at that - even when Dana re-iterated the point and said to Dan Henderson "tell these guys - you were there".....

he is only in the house for a day or so whilst they prepare his qualification fight, then he fights to see if he stays there perminently. in the house for 1 day and already causing trouble, what a family of wrong'uns.
no doubt dana will rig the fight in some way to allow another browning ratings grabber in the house, just as he licked junies are time after time.

ive mixed feelings whether i want to see him win, it will make interesting viewing him in the house and will be fun to see how the english lads deal with it - personally cant see english lads putting up with the shit the yanks put up with. then again i dont want to see him on the show because he and his family are all cunts and i wish they'd fuck off and die in very painful fashion.

think season 5-6 they might have stuck around, but the last few seasons i think they went home - probably after season 5 saw that big street fight between two already defeated fighters, having already lost they just get drunk and fuck about, which is disruptive to those who still have to fight.

Bispings blog, week 2:

As you probably noticed I wasnt around for the first six eliminators for Team USA as I was stuck in London.

Basically, there were a few hiccups with my visa - which needed to be renewed and - a long story short, I was sitting in the UFC’s London office waiting for that to be sorted out when the Team USA eliminators were taking place. I was on the phone to the American Embassy all morning but, eventually, I got the word it was sorted and I headed to Heathrow, having missed a couple of days of filming.

It was frustrating missing the first few days, especially as I wanted to get to Vegas as soon as possible so I could start getting my body-clock adjusted to the time zone. I knew from experience that it takes a good five days or so to get your sleep patterns adjusted and I was anxious to really hit the ground running with my team and start hard training as soon as I got off the plane.

I planned to be, and I was, a very hands-on coach. I didn’t want to be a coach who shouts from the sidelines; I knew the best way to give these guys the benefit of my experience was to actually get in there and do it with them. Although I flew to Vegas north of my 185-pound middleweight limit, I was in decent shape and I was ready to do every single session with my team.

I planned on running with them, sparring with them and rolling with them. And, as you probably saw in the teaser footage towards the end of the episode, I partied with them a little bit, too, towards the end of the series, although that wasn’t exactly planned.

But, yeah, I was frustrated to miss the US eliminators. I wanted to see what my guys were up against. Although the guys from the production team allowed me to watch tapes of the fights when I finally arrived, it wasn’t the same. You see things sitting at ringside the camera doesn’t pick up, little characteristics which give you an insight into the confidence levels of a fighter and obviously I missed all that while Dan Henderson had already seen my team up close.

Watching the USA team on tape, there were a couple of good performances, but on the whole I felt my guys were much hungrier, came into this in better shape, and came to win a contract with the UFC, whereas from what I saw, some of the Americans came to be TV stars. Fighting in the TUF gym can be nerve-wracking, as it is a weird environment and the pressure is on, but even so I felt my guys handled the eliminators better.

The other impression I got from watching the tape of the US eliminators was that Team UK were the team to beat. I had total confidence that I had a better team of fighters, both individually as well as collectively.

And I planned on giving my team another advantage by working them very hard, there was no way one of my guys would lose a fight because his cardio let him down. I was the coach, so if their cardio let them down it was actually me letting them down and I wasn’t going to let that happen.

I’ve always trained very hard, ever since I got a wake-up call in a fight. Once I accepted a kickboxing fight on the UK scene on two weeks’ notice. It was a 10 rounder, and I won the first six rounds but then I gassed and lost the next four. I won the fight but I promised never to disrespect myself or my career by going into any fight without being in top condition.

Before I got to TUF 3 I was known for having great cardio, but going on the show taught me that there were whole other levels of professionalism and hard work. And that’s exactly what I planned on showing the eight guys on my team.

Jumping to the present day, I met up with some of the guys from Team UK the other night in Birmingham, England ahead of a big media day. It was great to see them all again, and right away it was just like being back in Vegas together. They are all top guys, we are all mates, and I am really proud of them. These guys and myself really are a team, and a couple of them are going to come to my gym to help me train for Henderson.

one thing about this season, i think it's bullshit the way dana has chosen for the fights to be selected. for every match a coin is flipped, whoever wins the flip gets to choose the matchup. i think thats bullshit, the yanks have won the first flip, they could very well win the next 6 coin tosses, what a fucking disadvantage.
it was much better - and fairer, for the winners of each fight to remain in control of matchup choices.

he was playing the fool and parodying dumb and dumber. however, he seemed to put on his act and came across looking like a dick. it was clearly forced and made for awkward viewing as it totally backfired. i expect he felt he had to go in there and do as his brother did to try and become famous.

seems stupid that they would have a 135lb fighter compete at 155lb - i can only assume that no 155lb guys were available on short notice.

frank lester's win was legit but his ott celebration and general demeanour is already grating. he threatened with the kimura and his opponent tried to slam out of it - he wouldn't have headbutted the floor had his shoulder not been in trouble. the referee should have been on that quicker though, could have done some serious damage the way it was cranked on.

This is why Dana has a problem with having Mazzagati asa ref if I recall. He doesn't rate him. Not saying he is a bad ref, just saying calls like this which can be seen as late (remember we have diff camera angles he doesn't) and other supposed dubious calls are why some don't like him.
