Its not a bad article, though in some areas other studies differ....

It will help anyone sort their diet out, thats for sure, and in a relatively performance safe way.

I can spot several tweaks to it though straight off, based on my research from other studies...but overall I think its a pretty good article, perhaps one of the best stand alone articlces.

I'm always concerned when someone says that 'this is 99.9% accurate'...I wish he hadn't put that. I think when I read that that the author doesn't understand statistics, let alone the fields of science. I wish he hadn't written this as he actually does seem to have an idea!! Reading on, it proves he has some very good knowledge and theres a few things I'm going to follow up research on too.

Cheers Kitten, good find, and definately of use! Enjoyed reading that while eating some lunch!

# Avoid stress and get right with God spiritually to avoid internal turmoil. Stress raises cortisol levels and that keeps you from loosing fat.

Baws to them!

Dude, if someone wants to be my friend, they're more than welcome.

Also.

Now mix in the fact that you should be drinking 1 gallon of water per 100 g of protein per day. These fundamental principles have been established for athletes and national organizations for nearly 4 decades.

Protein Per Day Examples:

250-pound athlete-off season = 500 g of protein + 2-5-gallons of water per day
140-pound athlete-off season = 280 g of protein + 1.5 gallons of water per day

Now, Bearing in mind that you need 1 gallon per 100g of protein on their count, and a 250lb athlete eats 500g a day, why is the water requirement marked between 2 and 5 gallons? They gave a 2 gallon maximum. This would be equal to an athlete who eats 200g of protein a day. That's a large variance from 5 gallons,so why did they give the 1 gallon per 100g in the first place if they're putting a cap on the bottle at 2 gallons?

Am I missing something there? I've probably read something wrong, but just to make sure.

This is very poor nutrition article for any serious MMA/ combat athlete. It's poorly written and shows a poor knowledge of nutrition in general and an MMA/ combat athletes nutritional requirements for training.

I could go on for pages, but here are a couple of examples.

1. There are no
university studies that suggest that any athlete needs to be consuming 2 g protein per pound of body weight. The correct figure for an MMA athlete would be around half this value in my opinion (which is based on "university studies").

2.
If you are an athlete who weighs approximately 200 pounds, then you should be taking in approximately 200 g of protein per day and 200 g of carbohydrates a day, with an additional 40 g of fat.

So this is a baseline "recommended diet" thats around 1900 kcal/ day. That's what they should be eating on a general day-to-day basis. A 200 pound individual would have a BMR (what energy they would need if they just lay in bed all day) greater than this value. This statement also contradicts his recommendation of protein intake, because surely a 200 pound athlete should be consuming 400 g protein....

He then recommends reducing this energy intake gradually over the 10 weeks prior to a fight so that from around 4-5 weeks out from the fight you're consuming around 1200 kcal/ day.

3. Don't even get me started on the section on sodium.

When are people going to realise that MMA is not bodybuilding and that nutrition for MMA athletes (and athletes in general) should be about performance and aiding adaptation to and recovery from training and not about body image.

Drinking 2-5 gallons of water a day is going to cause some major problems with electrolyte inbalance.

I remember reading that a young lad died from consuming 8 litres of water per day over the course of a week. [He had a tooth ache and was drinking ice cold water to numb his mouth.]
