I am returning to BJJ after 6 months off. I have been training 2-3 times a week for the past 2-3 weeks and have picked up an annoying injury. I have a pain in my back. That i feel directly on my back bone level or just slightly below to my navel level.

I'm not sure whether this is just from my back not being used to pressed on the matt again or is a more serious injury. Although it doesn't stop me doing anything there is a consistent dull pain that is worse immediately, again not dehabilitating, after training.

I have been training no gi, but the wearing a gi from yesterday.

Should i grapple through it or see a specialist, if so what type (physio, osteopath, voodoo doctor)

Regular visits to a sports masseur and occasional visits to a chiropractor are useful in keeping injuries under control. Hard to say where to start with your injury, I find massage good forcptevention and chiro good for cure.

I'd definitely get it looked at... thse things are easier to fix sooner rather than later.

As to who to go and see - word of mouth is best if possible, the individual practitioner is more important IMO than what "style" they practise :) There's a lot of cross over between good osteopaths, physios and chiropractors.

Where are you based?

Ah, don't know anyone out there unfortunately. I've heard that Oz is crawling with good physios though :) Good luck, and hope you get it sorted.

(Alternatively, feel free to buy me a plane ticket :p )

I use to get dull pains on occasion when training and I just stretch it out.The likely problem is the intense nature of the workout jujitsu gives you causing the muscle to clamp up a bit.I usually just train through it and stretch. However it is wise to be precautious I believe I know my body and when im in trouble or when im not.So the decision lies with you.A massage will help the blood flow and circulation of the muscle which would ease that dull pain but good deep stretching is the ultimate cure.Try it out and let me know what the verdict is.It will take a while to suffeciently stretch that muscle out though say a month and a bit.
