Hi guys. What would you say when your opponent in a competition in a recent East London comp stinks of weed? Yes, I lost to the guy but it's not on.
Waited a while to get this off my chest but come on lads, psyching yourself up is one thing but smoking pot and stinking of shit is pathetic.
What yall think about this?

Maybe he'd been watching Eddie Bravo for inspiration and got a bit carried away?
Also if you can get stoned and still compete properly you're putting yourself at a disadvantage surely?

i KNOW, dont know what's worse, losing or losing to someone who was stoned!!! Not a pleasant experience and the number of people leaving toilets w/o washing too and competing is worrying. wtf?

train hard, work your cardio, your positions, your subs and your sub defense and next time fuck that "stinky skunky monkey "up! Boiy!
let him fucking have it - let him know that spend time rolling blunts is a fucking waste of his time.
Unfortunately he was probably better than you (on the day)- and youve got your work cut out, but there is no better feeling than beating someone that is cheating!!!!

Is it actually illegal under IBJJF competition rules?
I think it will probably make some people better & some people worse. It's not the same for everyone for sure.
Would you be annoyed if your opponent had been drinking?

It cannot enhance. Although being illegal you can grass him and try and gain some kind of shabby hollow win by default

It cannot enhance.
How can you be sure of that?

true, it makes you run faster and improves you reactions, that why usain bolt and federer light up before playing
Eddie Bravo says it makes him better.

Im a clean living boy, but I gotta be honest, I dont have a problem with it. My mate always stinks of skunk, especially when we roll because he just sweats it out, also if his Gi has been in the same room when he s smoking, or his weed is in his bag with his Gi, it stinks.
He may of been stoned, but he may just of been stinking of it for above reasons, either way, its done and dusted now, take a deep breath and let it go.

Lads, I'm not making excuses. I got beat by a better and stronger opponent BUT when rolling, one needs all the air as possible right? Having a deep stench of drugs either by actively bunning before or hanging with those that are is annoying and disrespectful to the opponent to say the least.
Maybe I'm being over dramatic by being an old goat but even cigarette smoke in public places cheeses me off but believe me, sparring with somebody who's just taken a fag, drugs etc... (though rare, is not right)
I never understood the need why people seek extra kick out of life by taking these things. It's gonna mess you up, either now or later.
I get a buzz out of bjj after a hard session and once in a while, treating myself to a greasy jumbo donor kebab with lucozade after. mmmm, just the thought makes me wanna get one now.
Nuff respect lads for the feedback. No more stinky skunky monkey,
No speed, no weed,
no crack, no smack,
no cash no gash,
something I heard lil while back and agree with most of :D

I use to smoke pot untill recently (Gave it up due to either BJJ or pot) and it does have its advantages/disadvantages.
One thing i've noticed is some people get tense while rolling in BJJ/No-Gi but after a spliff you are more relaxed. Why is this a advantage? Simple as a tense person is much easier to manipulate (roll-over to get advantage posistion, Arm bar... Yada, Yada). I use to have a Spliff before training just to loosen me up as i use to be like corpse with a hard on (EI: STIFF).
Disadvantage though is lung campacity. Just like a Ciggie it lowers your lung intake by a severe ammount and this effect lasts for several hours (No brainer really) and same effect is with a Spliff. Your coordination is effected slightly (My reaction time was slower).
Silly question. Does a person with B.O offend you? If they do then if were ever in a competition together im not gonna have a bath for a month just to get advantage. :-)

soldmysoul, thats the exact answer I'm looking for. Course b.o doesn't offend but its common courtesy to trim nails, clean gi 4 hygiene reasons for the opponent agree no? Thanks.

havent read the whole thread... but do you REALLY care if he's been smoking before a fight? Concentrate on your own training, and go out there and show what a clean pair of lungs can do ;)

i hate people who smoke after weed when rolling. I have told several people to clean them selfs up at training. Its complete respect less to smell like weed or plump ass

Does that suggest that you are not offended by a stinky person? Your fucking kidding me - Stinky fucks are are properly offensive! I bet every club out there has had one, or two. And they offend everyone!

I think he was referring to the b.o during a fight but thankfully, very few where I train, but you're right, not pleasant!

mathematist has a wolverine (x-men) level of sense of smell . One rolling session he tapped, for no apparent reason. when asked why, he said 'your gi smells of dettol'
I put a cap of dettol in fabric softener compartment when I wash my gi and rash guard. :D

I accept I have sensitive smell. Where we train, the caretaker smks weed every Friday. Maybe he has developed and evolved my sense of smell!
Marijuana isn't a performance enhancing drug the same way steroids are, but yes it can make certain people perform better, or worse as it is a depressent, the same way coffee, or a can of coke might as it is a stimulant.
I agree it sucks when somone ur rolling with stinks, B.O. puts me off, but im not gonna expect my opponent to take a shower every 10 mins.
I dont see how smoking before comp is pathetic? aside from the fact that it is against the law, how does it differ from an asthma pump which prevents guys from gassing and spazing out because they have a physical disadvantage, perhaps your opponent gets too excited, which is a mental disadvantage and he needs a depressent like marijuana to calm himself down?
doesn't that make asthmatics equally pathetic?
IMO in competition aslong as they dont have an unfair advantage from taking the drug it doesnt matter.
Some guys pray before competing, some guys cry before competing, some guys smoke weed before competing, whatever floats thier boat.
Baz.

Weed isn't a depressant btw, it's technically a hallucinogen I think?
Daddy D
29-05-2009, 09:16 AM
Smoking weed is a choice baz, asthma isnt, so I dont agree with your comparison at all. Its a matter of choice, also the bloke who stunk of weed won the fight, I think thats whats chaffing mathmetists butt. Not only did he lose, but he lost to a stinky skunky monkey. Also he once tapped to a bloke who smelt of dettol. Personly I like the smell of the green stuff, If the bloke I was about to fight stunk of weed, Id see it as an advantage.

which part of it? the weed, the asthma or what

Hi lads. just to clarify, I got beat by a better opponent, I am not doubting that one bit, neither am I saying that it enhanced him one bit.
BUT, it did make the fight that little bit uncomfortable for a non-weed smoker!
That's all I'm trying to say and not that we should be looking and smelling like John Travolta on a Saturday night when we compete
Yes, I do have a sensitive nose. Even at another comp after I had competed, the side doors to the hall were opened and the smoke of the ciggy smokers was coming in when you're sparring and competing, that's the last thing you need and I did over hear others talking about it too!
I am not complaining about B.O, dettol or other stuff in training but during a competition, I feel that out of courtesy for the opponent, one shouldn't smell of fags and try their best to keep the air clean. Surely that can't be too much to ask for lads?
Thanks again for your insight!

Not you mate - I meant the earlier post comparing weed and asthma. As you said asthma pumps are a necessity so the comparison doesn't make sense

Meant to say that it wouldn't bother me but do agree it's all part of general courtesy and respect to your opponent. Getting pissed up before the match wouldn't be illegal I guess but your opponent probably wouldn't be happy about it. Would be funny though.
